State of Decay released today on XBLA for 1600 spacebucks ($20).  Downloading the demo now, of course, but I'd like to see comments about it here in the next few days (especially after the CAG 3.0 switchover drought that took place yesterday)

This game truly feels like a "could have been retail release" XBLA alternative, so the 1600 pricepoint seems justified.  IGN had some good coverage videos of it this past week, and the few initial reviews out so far are giving it very high marks.  I had initially thought it was an MMO but it's just a single-player open world campaign that should take at least 12 hours+ to complete.

Played the demo and was very impressed, will definitely like to pick this up sometime in the future. Could see it being alot of fun co-op too actually if that was an option.

I really don't know what is going on with Microsofts marketing. I had never heard about this game until three days ago and I was shocked that it was coming out os soon. A 360 exclusive and it looks extremly interesting. I watched the IGN vids, got hooked and downloaded it early this morning. So far with about an hour put into the game I am loving it. This is really what I wanted in a zombie game, survival.

Shame that so few people know it even exists.

I actually learned about it from a coworker who basically thought it was the best game release ever. It's a kind-of indie game, except the developers have a contract with Microsoft.

As far as marketing, the game has nice big ads on the Xbox dash. Word of mouth from the hardcore fans seems to be doing it justice as well.

I don't think they should go out of their way to market this game. It is good, for an indie game, but its also glitchy. That is perfectly fine for an indie game, but not marketable to the general Xbox audience.

Biggest problems with the game I've seen are graphics problems, lack of coop, and use of the Crytek Engine. I'm gonna buy it since the gameplay looks great and I can use the gamerscore.

This is basically a test for their online MMO.

This was code named class3. It is being put out because it is a fun game, but also as a test for their MMO code named class4 (I know, imaginative isn't it). Its basically a single player beta of their MP counterpart to come later.

Sounds bad, but at least they have a vested interest to fix any bugs and not abandon it as they are using this as the groundwork for their "continuation" project.

I'm loving this game, just feels refreshing. The little details it has are great. For instance if you call on some survivors to come out and collect supplies they actually get there in real time it seems. I thought they would just appear our of thin air and come grab them but they actually have to leave the base, make their way to the location, and collect and make it back. This leads me to beleive they can get killed on the trip over which is very interesting.

I was just at the hope base dropping some supplies off when I saw a bunch of people running outside, I went out and saw a horde of zombies approaching the gate. Was about to set in for an epic showdown when the cord from my wired controller somehow touched the  power button on my 360 (WTF!?). Haha man.

I'm enjoying this a lot right now, though there's plenty of open world jank to it where their ambition for a big world with a lot of zombies in was prioritized over a smooth framerate and visuals.

You really can't try to be Superman in this game. Seems like more than three zombies and you are in serious trouble.

I've played about 2 hours of it so far and it's pretty great. It feels like a mix of Dead rising and Day Z.

Heard about it but yeah it's on the dashboard now so that'll most likely give it more exposure. Downloading demo for the night.

Alright, last word for the night.

This game is fricken amazing. I have played it for HOURS today. Every hour I discover something new. Here are some things that I find cool, these aren't spoilers but if you just want to go in completely blind like me and discover these little gameplay touches yourself, I just skip the end of my post. It's the little things in this game that I adore.

-Your companions come to scavage things in real time. They are actually in the world doing stuff.

-People can go missing and you can actually search building by building and find them

-A few times I have heard random gunshots. Not sure what is going on but I guess there are other survivers beside your own rumaging through the world

-Zombies attack ANYONE who is near them. None of thatgive you special attention BS. You can even stumble upon zombies attacking other people.

So far the only things I haven't seen that would be cool is any AI driving cars I haven't ran into any dead survivors. Not sure if the ones in your group can get hurt or die off screen. Will be awesome if they can though. This is what that last Walking Dead game wishes it was!

Nice.

Not sure about the deaths but I'm sort of guessing some people won't die who are tied to the storyline. I was at the one farm with the injured guy on the tower and the horde redirected under it due to stupidity. When I went to climb down, he followed and then fell straight down. I had no melee weapon, so after a two or three kicks, I ran like a butthole. Sprinted to a truck that ate up almost all my level 5 or 6 stamina and he miraculously appears right nearby with one zombie on him.

Another thing a friend pointed out to me in a party. If you sprint and hit A, I think (maybe twice, I only tried doing it once) You can do a dropkick that seems to drop them for a quick kill. I'm guessing trying it with many zombies around would be really stupid.

As for the complaints I've heard in general. The framerate doesn't bother me a whole lot. And most of the glitches I've found relate to cars. Sometimes it lags a bit and at one point right after I started playing the car turned blue for a second like the skin disappeared.

Finally had a death happen. Got a mission to take out a Big UM. Meet up with a guy named Anders in a big open field, there were zombies everywhere. We fight the Big guy and he takes a lot out of Anders. Pretty much beats his ass. but we kill him. After that a huge wave of zombies jump on us. I was swinging like crazy but Anders got overwhelmed. I had no stamina but was still running in to save him. As I got closer I saw him pull a grenade. He blew himself up in the middle of the pack so I could get away. Died a hero.

This right here is making me seriously consider buying it at full MSRP vs waiting for a sale...
Paly the tiral or watch some videos to see how much you would enjoy this game. For me personally, if I knew what I know now about this game, I would have paid the full $60 game price for it. I know its only been a couple of days but at this point, I honestly feel like this is one of the best exclusive games on the 360. Like if at E3 they announced they were making a bigger better version of this for the Xbox One, it would help sway me to get that console. Really cant say I love this game enough.

I just assume it will be on sale quickly as this is a semi beta for their class4 project (the MMO portion).

That and I RARELY ever buy a game at MSRP.

First heard about this a few months ago, I wanna say I saw it in game informer or @gamer....the release came in perfect timing right after the ms stores 1200 point "sale"...downloaded it asap Wednesday morning and enjoyed a few hours worth last night..looking forward to an online experience based on this...

This is one of the best xbox live arcade games to come out this year. My roommate ended up purchasing this game after we played the demo. So far, a few hours in, it's a very good game and if you have points to burn, you should definitely pick this up.

This game is essentially zombie sims. You need to keep your survivors in check and make sure you have enough supplies for everyone on your team and also making sure your headquarters is secure when you go out and murk zombies. Fun game. Sucks that it's not online, but hell, it's a great timewaster and I love the open world feel it has to it.

Played the demo, looked at the map all the time. Wasn't until I was near the end when I realized you could zoom out the map, holy f that's big for a XBLA game! A few things bugged me - dude AI guy/girl stop hitting me!, at one point a character was sitting in the air with their hands outstretched outwards playing with an imaginary object (radio bug), takes too damn long to search something - but overall I enjoyed it. No points atm though.

Yeah, had someone in the party die on my watch. They also pulled a grenade

Also, I've fought three of those big uns. One was right outside the base so I managed to run back in and shoot him from the guard tower.

Oh, and I flipped that little sports car on a horde on the highway between towns. No cars too close either. Somehow, I managed to kill all seven or so of them with my trusty garden hoe (and some ibuprofen).

And a heads up, if you set up an outpost at the fast food place, you'll unlock a mask.

Wow, one of my main characters had an off-screen death. Not cool!

Basically they had been missing for a while. I turned the game on today and got a note about how earlier someone found there body. This sucks.

Noticed a bug yesterday.

If you leave one container unsearched in a building (still glowing), after a couple in game days or offline hours the house should 'reset' and you can get more random items.

Repeated this with the gun shop in the starter town to get 6 ammo piles, two Glocks and two Shotguns.

Just leave the bookcase upstairs alone, unless you need more talking dollies or something.

("I wuv yew!")

Don't know if making the place an outpost disables the bug, but what I do is just setup one nearby that's booby trapped to keep the area clear of zeds.

Also, calling in Scavengers is probably a bad idea because they search everything and breakdown any stockpiles they can't carry.

Trying out some of the new CAG 3.0 functionality, I'm going to be streaming State of Decay on our Twitch channel in a few minutes. My internet's not great, so the video quality won't be that good.

I'll remove the player afterwards.

Edit: The stream is done, so I've removed the Twitch player.

There is a button right next to Font on the WYSIWYG editor called "Special BBCode" that has all sorts of interesting embed codes to make it easy to do the more unique things in your posts on CAG.

Has anyone successfully completed the mission where you go to get the doctor from the Wilkersons?

I've managed to fight off the horde of regular zombies, but then all the fat ones are still there.  I didn't have a gun, so I tried throwing Molotovs at them to no avail.

I also can't find any tips online from anyone else.  There was a Youtube video, but the guy just fled and failed the mission.  :dunce:

You have to fight them with melee.
Any special tricks for them?

They seem too big to be taken down with a few melee attacks.
Not really. The AI dude was the one to take them both down. My attempts to shoot him and burn him to death with molotovs proved fruitless for me.
Thanks for the help.

I managed to beat that mission after you posted (though I shot the fatties from outside the house). One actually managed to get into the house, and I beat it with melee attacks while it choked the AI guy.

Where is the doctor after all of this? I took care of what happened upstairs, but I haven't seen the doctor in the church. I've actually got a number of characters that could use his care.

For me, he showed up there by himself and helped Ed get back to full health.

State of Decay is an awesome game and definitely worth the money! While far from perfect, it comes really close to the zombie survival simulation i've been waiting for. It's also nice to see that the developers have already submitted a title update to M$ to address some of the game's issues.

If you've been reading up on this game, don't get too discouraged by the complaints about frame rate/screen tearing -- it's really not as bad as some people make it out to be. The fun you'll have will outweigh these inconveniences.

He'll be back at the church already. The fat zombies can be both burned with multiple molotovs, shot (headshots!), beaten up or driven over. I don't recommend the car option because it will jack up the car, and molotovs with an ally character nearby isn't a good idea. Keeping a fatty in front of a window and shooting him in the head worked the best for me, it took the least time and not that many bullets. Be arned that if there's a zombie hoard neaby the gunshots will draw them however.

For melee, LB + X is strong attack. LB + B will do a roll. If you've got a fat one alone, strong attack, then roll away, then repeat. Remember to eat snacks to keep stamina up.

Hope the patch comes out tomorrow, getting hammered by the "Too Many Infestations" bug.

I keep losing people that take off to stop the Infestations that keep popping up all over the world.

Finally had to send out a radio message to recruit more survivors and I hit the jackpot- two ladies that are former Army and good with guns- one is a Medic the other a Cook.

Then about an hour later they both go missing.

:censored:

If this game incorporates co-op .. I'm 500% sold. Looks very solid without it, though. I just really like co-op. :)

I want to be sold, but the demo was too buggy for me. Zombies popping through walls, clawing at invisible walls, and cars just randomly popping up in the road right before you hit them.

If a patch comes along and fixes the problems, I'm in.
