After installing 4.45, my PS3 reboots and stuck at the wave screen, I rebooted twice by holding the power button for 10 seconds or so, still stuck!  Anyone else having this problem?

Try re-downloading the firmware on a usb stick, and re-installing it through safe mode.

fuck-ing crazy. I saw it on Kotaku through FB. Its hard to believe b/c Joystiq or IGN don't have a post up, but I think they're sleeping b/c they never update this late at night. It appears to be happening mainly to PS3's with upgraded HDDs.

What I don't understand is that this patch must have rolled out just a little while ago, AFTER the PS store updated. My unit is set to auto-update b/t 4pm-6pm and I played at 5:30pm, got on the store and it never popped up with the message to update the firmware (I don't even think you can access the store if you don't update)

So I just turned off my auto-update to be safe b/c I have a nice 1TB HDD in my last-model Slim with over 400gb of content that I WILL NOT download again if the unit bricks..

Yeah, the first posts @ sony forums was W 7:12 pm, 30 minutes later, 7 pages, now upi to 26.  It sounds like the first folks that did systems restores and attempted safe mode reinstalls of firmware are even worse off.

Seems like the prudent course is don't install firmware, but if you did, don't do anyting else.

Yikes!

There is nothing wrong with the 4.45 update...if you do it right.  I have never, ever let my PS3 get the update via internet.  Been even more wary of it since they started doing incremental updates a year or so ago.

Just updated my PS3 even after hearing about this.  Did my usual, manually downloaded full update file on PC and put onto USB drive and updated my system flawlessly.  And yes, I do have an upgraded hdd in it so don't buy into the lies and hyperbole about that nonsense.

Avoid the incremental update and you'll likely be fine like me!

I have my system set to auto update overnight so I just unplugged it to prevent it from trying to install this firmware, just in case. Firmware updates are really starting to irk me with all systems. The benefits of them seem to be far outweighed by the negative consequences. One of the PS3 firmware updates locked up on me a while ago and essentially locked me out of my system because it was stuck in an endless loop of trying to update the firmware that wouldn't complete. I ended up having to install a new HDD, download and update the firmware using the new HDD, swap the old HDD back in, and reformat the HDD again... After that I've been overly cautious about firmware updates.

Man, this is like... what, the 15th time a PS3 update resulted in issues of some type?

Luckily for me, I've never had issues with updates but I never take risks.

Well crap, wish I saw this before I went to bed. Guess Ill have to turn on my PS3 and hope for the best.

EDIT: Phew, eitner mine is fine or they removed it before my auto update between 2-4am.

Hmm - been on mine all night and never saw the update.  My kids were playing PSASBR for a while and then I got on the PS store to get Saints Row The Third.  I did notice that it got a little wacky there - the progress bar isn't showing any movement but the MB count is going up.  Hopefully that downloads and installs OK.  I was going to background it but the option never came up.

Edit: OK, it is installing now and the progress bar is good there.  So I will just shut down afterwards.

Odd, though, that it didn't want to update for me because I was getting on the PSN store right around the time the OP said he got the update.

Update...  I have replied in the PSN thread from above, but the topic is not static...

My PS3 is the slim one, upgraded to 1TB, stuck after 4.45 is installed (the reboot stuck at the wave screen, no XMB).  Called Sony rep last night, he told me to fix files (option 3 in SAFE MODE), but that didn't help (it ended up with message "corrupted file, do you want to reformat teh hard drive?).   I told the rep I don't want to reformat, so he told me to call back later (he said this is a known issue and they're working on it).

I've tried reinstall 4.45 from a memory stick as well (it took a while, a lot of loading), but no luck, still stuck at the wave screen.  I don't think the PS3 is bricked, well, there's nothing else to do but wait.

My 1tb slim got screwed because of the update. Can't use it until new update comes out.
I'm in the same boat, what's even worse is that I just bought the last of us yesterday.
Ditto for me. Got The Last of Us for Father's Day. I was just hoping to play a little before bed and foolishly agreed to the update on my slim. smh. Even tried formatting my 1 TB HDD this morn...of course it didn't work.

I read this only happened to people that installed their own hard drives. Talk about a reason to not upgrade the HDD. Sony cant test a machine with the HDD in it. They probably only check firmware on the released hardware before putting out the firmware update.

I actually just upgraded the hard drive on mine yesterday and had to do the mandatory firmware update.

It went without a problem but, I think this update only works well on Super Slim PS3

Edit: Seems super slims are also affected at random.

Appearantly, they're releasing a fixed update later today that will get you past your system locking up. You download it, stick it in a USB drive, and then install it via safe mode.

Wow, that's pretty crazy.  Before logging on to play ME3 at around 11pm, I went to the store to download the free games.  It said there was an update, but I canceled it since I wanted to start playing right away.  It logged me off of PSN and I went ahead and started playing.  When I finished playing at around 1am, I checked to see if I could get into the store again and it went right through without asking for an update.  I thought this was weird, but was able to download the SR3 as well as some DLC.  I haven't checked on it since then, but I'm sure glad I didn't do the update last night.

i guess its a good thing i dont turn on my ps3 but like once every 3 months... im prob behind a few updates at this point. Ill just wait this out.

From everything I've read on the interwebs, I must be the ONLY person to be able to downgrade to 4.41 after the 4.45 update. PS+ auto-magically downloaded the 4.45 update for me (PS+). I started my PS3 only to have it hang at the pre-xmb wave screen like everyone else. I booted into safe-mode and picked the system update option (#6?) and it asked for firmware 4.41 or higher - which seemed odd to me - but I download the latest 4.41 from Sony and installed it via USB and now all is well with my PS3. Problem solved.

All I can figure at this point is that the automatic update/install failed to complete somehow and even though it "bricked" (wrong term) my box, it never finished completing the 4.45 update; which allowed me to downgrade.

Just for the record, this is a fat PS3 with a 1TB drive.

Were you able to sign in?  I downloaded and installed the new firmware fine (4.41) but then when I turned my system back on I couldn't sign in, but I'm not sure if it was my wireless acting up or if was the PS Network.

I'm curious to know this as well... considering trying it out myself.

edit: Nevermind, my safe mode's updater asks for 4.45 or higher. :/

Wow! How did that happened?! That's pretty freaky!

Temporary solution below for those who can't wait until Thursday.  You'll need your old (stock) HDD and a USB drive.  I tested this and it worked for me. :)  Downside is that you'll be using your old, small HDD until Thursday, but it's better than having no PS3 at all.

1. Install your old (stock) hard drive
2. Download the 4.45 update and put it on your USB drive in a X:/PS3/UPDATE/ folder https://sites.google.com/site/ps3firmware445update/home
3. Boot the ps3 into safe mode, and use Option 6 (install update) to install 4.45 onto the hard drive.

The downside, of course, is having to use your old/small hard drive. Better than no PS3 at all, though. Other than that, everything is working fine, PSN included.

Mine is back to normal. I was expecting something stupid like a free avatar pic for them leaving my console dead for over a week, but they went even further and gave nothing at all. What about compensation for the people who had rented something and couldn't watch/play it.

Yeah, it would have been nice if they'd have offered something as compensation-- even a simple apology-- rather than taking nine days to fix it and pretending the issue wasn't as big as it was.  The summer PSN outage of 2011 didn't bother me at all (as I wasn't playing any multiplayer games at that time), compared to this which was a pretty big inconvenience, and their response was astronomically different in that case: four free games, free PS+, etc.  It's a little irritating that they're pretending this wasn't even a big issue, with all of their posts claiming that it only affected "a small number" of PS3 owners, when their own support forum has over 4,000 posts about it so far.

With that said, I'm just glad it's working again.
