Need new laptop. Anyone have a Lenovo?

Lenovos are generally very good computers. Asus laptops are also very well made, as are Toshibas.

I've used Lenovo's exclusively through work since 2006. Over my three models, the batteries have been recalled twice. No other issues.

I just had a Lenovo $600 laptop's hard drive poop out on me after 2 years. It was really good up until then and I'd recommend one.

I have a y480, it works well, feels solid and good construction.  A few problems I have had though.  I had the back left hinge pop out which created some video errors, at the same time this happened I had installed windows 8 and was having a lot of issues with the graphics display drivers and getting them to work.  Still had problems after going back to windows 7, and finally just sent it in, more so because of the hinge problem.  They fixed it all just fine and their warranty and service is nice and wonderful.

When I got it back I was having some issues with the speakers, that may have initially been there, I never use them so I just ignored it until my fans stopped working and my computer starter overheating and shutting down.  Still within the 1 year window so I just sent it back to them no problem and got it back with everything working fine now.

As a disclaimer I use it as a laptop which means it is moving a lot, but I am fairly gentle with it (the hinge was probably my fault as I was less than gentle after 15 hours of trying to fix the video drivers after installing windows 8).  I would still completely recommend a lenovo even with these problems as every computer and company will have bad apples and problems, and as a whole I have seen less with mine and my friends who use them.  The only computer I have never had a problem with is my macbook.  I have a 2008 original unibody aluminum macbook and it is working wonderfully.  Never had a problem with it, and last year installed an SSD in it and it was like a whole new computer.  Granted it is a mac which comes with its own demons, but overall I have to say they are worth the cost.

That's not Lenovo's fault though. They buy their hard drives in bulk from other manufacturers like Toshiba, Samsung, Hitachi.

2-3 years is pretty average nowadays for a SATA hard drive failure, nothing like the older IDE drives that would last up to ten years or more. Part of it is a shift in corporate philosophy - why build something to last such a long time when technology advances even quicker and the end user would probably choose to replace the system with one that has faster processor, more memory, newer/better(?) operating system, etc after a failure for about the same cost as repairing the existing system. Built-to-last doesn't pad the bottom line and doesn't make investors happy. Built-in obsolescence is the word now.
