$154.99 Nintendo - 3DS (Flame Red) Bestbuy.com

Honestly, I would recommend the XL instead.  The standard 3DS is IMO an intermediate step up.  The XL improves on it.  Think of it as a model that is larger and corrects the "negatives" of the initial model.  Plus, the Xl is on sale this week at TGT.  Good time for purchase there or PMs at where ever you hold credit.

Picked up an XL from Bestbuy just a couple weeks ago for $15 more than that.  Just have to be patient for a good deal.

I heard the 3d is better on the orginal 3ds. Since it would be the same technology producing images at a smaller resoloution. Unless the XL has diffrent hardware. I don't like the way the XL looks.Looks are bassed on personal opion though.

It sort of does.

The buttons at the bottom are actual buttons, over a strip of plastic over a button like on the smaller 3DS. You also got more battery life (due to the size), the 3D button locks on the bottom (instead of activating it if you touch it), more space to work with, larger memory card comes included and the stylus is not telescopic (those can be annoying and tedious to deal with).

Not a HUGE difference, but I got my XL for $160 during a sale and they've commonly hit $160 and the old ones have hit $130 several times. Not to mention the Flare Red units were $50 - $60 at Sears a while ago.

one other thing ive heard but havent tested: (still have to open my XL, first one i opened had a weird smudge on the screen i couldnt get rid of, havent opened the one i swapped out for since ive been waiting on the screen protectors) Supposedly the speakers on the XL are worse than the ones on the 3ds. I've heard ranging reports from just a little worset, to tinny as hell and total garbage. They probably had to shrink them down or something for the bigger screen. I think they work fine with headphones though

I have heard that the "issues" with the speaker are because of the default setting with the audio. Go in and change that to improve the sound. I haven't had both to compare, but I think the XL speakers are fine.

XL looks and feels cheaper to me as compared to my 3DS.  That said I prefer the 3D on the XL as I find there is more of a sweet spot before it makes my eyes go googly.  I'm guessing it's tied to the screen being larger.

I do prefer the sound on the 3DS, but was unaware it could be "fixed" by a setting.  Thanks for that, will give it a go when I get home.

That said, when I bought my XL for $175, the regular 3DS was onsale for $130.  I preferred the XL over it even at that pricepoint, so only $15-20 price difference is a no brainer for me...go with the XL
