Can I use a USB flash drive to download XBL content directly to it?

I have the 4GB Xbox system with no hard drive, but I need to get one soon so I can download the madden early release.

Instead of buying an expensive HDD with excessive storage that I'll never use, can I just use a USB flash?

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Flash-SanDisk-SDCZGXB-016G-A11/dp/B003EV7ED8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1376276103&sr=8-4&keywords=xbox+360+slim+20gb

I know people buy these things for extra storage space to transfer content from their hard drives, but I don't need it for storage.

Anyone with experience know if I can just pop it in and download XBL content such as the early release directly from XBL to the flash drive and then play it from the flash drive?

limit for what?
The amount of storage space per flash drive. Meaning, if you have a flash drive larger than 32gb, you can only use up to 32gb of the space. There is also a limit of 2 flash drives that can be plugged in/in use at once, but I think that both can be 32gb, giving you up to 64gb to work with. I could be wrong on them combining as I've never actually tried it (never needed to), but I'm pretty sure you can.

Wow thanks for that. I may even go for the 16 gig one since that would be plenty space for the early release.

OK so I went to Radio Shack to get that USB drive, now the question is how do I download directly to it.

I'm trying to download Crackdown to test it out. Crackdown is over 6GB, and my USB is 16GB. Is there a way for to change where I want to download Crackdown to? It says 'save to' at the top but I can't get there to change it. I think it's trying to download it to my 4GB memory unit which obviously can't fit it.

EDIT: NVM, I see that when you download something it just puts it to the USB.

Whoa, wait a second. Sorry to bump this but I have one more question to ask.

I downloaded Crackdown directly to my USB to test it out and it worked fine. However, it won't allow me to join co-op games or play cooperatively. Anyone know what this is about? An error message pops up and says something like, 'you cannot play cooperatively without a hard drive'. If this is just something with Crackdown than that's fine. But if it's more than I'm in trouble.

Does anyone know if I can play co-op or online in general without a hard drive and just the USB? It's vital to me because 100% of my time playing the Madden and NHL Early Release will be spent online.

It depends on the game. It says on the back of the cover if a hard drive is required. Or, if you are downloading a game, it will/should tell you if a hard drive is required for single and/or multiplayer on the product page. You can find it when you scroll over to the right (it's the page that tells you how many players, if there's 720p/1080p support, etc). If it doesn't say anything about a hard drive there, you should be good to go.

Is requiring a hard drive to play online tied to the multiple balance issue patches that it'll receive? I know for a fact with Battlefield 3 that those patches can be quite large thus would require some sort of hard drive.
