I will say that upgrading the HDD on the PS3 is one of the EASIEST things you will ever do in your life. You literally undo 2 screws, slide it out then slide new one in

I faintly remember reading something about upgrading your PS3's HDD possibly causing errors. Am I misremembering or is that only for specific HDDs?

Based on your post, I'm definitely interested in upgrading my HDD from 160GB to 1TB at this price. :whistle2:k

I upgraded my original 60 gig 3 or 4 years ago to a 500gb western digital scorpio blue 5400 rpm drive and it's worked flawlessly. It's now full and I have so many PS+ games I'm going to have to start deleting all the videos I've downloaded to free up space for all the free PS+ games. Guess I'll make due with it though even though I'd love to have 1 terabyte drive.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but will this work with my phat model?
Yes. All PS3 consoles use the same size (dimensionally) HDD. The only possible difference is the HDD carriage (small frame/caddy/holder) that holds the HDD.

Just about any "laptop" HDD will fit inside any PS3.

Would this work with a 360 via the USB?
No, this is an internal hard drive and does not have any way to connect to a USB cable.

I completely agree! Super easy to do.

It is best to back up your PS3 data to an external HDD (if you have one) before you perform this upgrade.

Yes it will!

This will also come in handy for the ps4. They already announced upgradable memory.
Upgrade 500GB to 1 TB is not much improvement. At beginning there won't be many PS4 games anyway. I'd rather wait until 4TB HDs drop in price and use that to upgrade the PS4 in 2 years.

Still upgrading PS3 is a good idea. There're many good PS3 games in PS+ IGC. I've already upgraded mine to 1 TB and can't be happier.

I think only game saves will go to the cloud, but not game install data, music, videos, photos, etc.
So if I only have install data out of what you listed and don't mind reinstalling it for the given games (e.g., I'd retain my GTA V save, but the game would have to install the game install data when I start it up again after upgrading the HDD), would I be OK using the cloud?

Been waiting on a good deal on a 1TB for my PS3. Finally traded Injustice, MLB 13, Spider-Man 3, and Resonance of Fate to Best Buy and with the 100% trade bonus, got $66 credit. Less than $20 out of pocket, so I don't think I did too bad. This is still about $10 cheaper than I've seen elsewhere, so I'd jump on it if you're interested.

The 7200 rpm debate. Have any of you noticed your PS3 getting hotter with the higher RPMs?

I put my saves on a flash drive, but, thanks to PS+/Cloud, I didn't need them. You should copy all of your saves, just in case.

Two good guides on the process:

I have a 160gb external drive that I'm using to upgrade my 320gb to the 1TB. I just deleted PSN games I had beaten, along with game data(installs) from games I had beaten so the backup would fit on the 160. Left saves, and PSN games I haven't played yet. According to Sony, all that should transfer.

EDIT: You can always pop your old drive back in if something goes wrong.

I have a 7200 rpm in my slim and haven't had any trouble. The FAQ on playstation.com clearly states 7200 rpm doesn't help with anything though, so it's not worth paying more for.

The main issue is it is hard to find 2.5" HDDs with very high capacity like this one. This one just happens to be 7200 rpm as well.

However, there is also a 2.5" 1.5 TB 5400 rpm drive by the same company, but it is too expensive ($140) for an extra 500 GB:

Right, it is. Like I said I've had no issues with my 7200rpm drive. If it scares you though, here is another option for $10 more:

I think this is the Hitachi model that I had in my PS3 phat and moved to a PS3 slim. So far so good (I picked it up sometime last year, probably around Black Friday).

This sure is tempting.  I don't really need to be spending $70 on a hard drive right now - save that money for Rocksmith 2014 - but I am constantly deleting and shuffling stuff to have room for new games and demos.  Decisions, decisions, decisions...

For what it's worth I paid around $50 for a 500 gb Toshiba (I think) external at Walmart went home carefully removed it and swapped in my old ps3 drive so now I have a 500gb ps3 and a 160gb external

I have a 500GB, 7200 rpm hybrid drive in my phat, and have no heating probems.

I got this: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STBU500100/dp/B00829THSW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380225885&sr=8-1&keywords=763649038451 when SD posted a deal on it. I used a $10 off Office Max coupon at Staples to get it for $31 and change. It was easier to open than I expected. Opened it and formatted it to FAT32 with guiformat.

Though, that was some months back, lots of cheap HD deals have been popping up. When I see external HDs are on clearance, I check to see if they're 2.5".

The question is if PS4 hard drive will be 2.5" or 3.5" in physical size. I haven't been able to find that info anywhere so far (plenty of speculation, though).
considering how small the system is, it doesn't seem logical that they would use a 3.5' hard drive. Id bet money on it being 2.5

Will the 500GB of this same model from BBY work fine? It's cheaper and I don't think I need that much HD space. Thinking of getting that one instead.

To be fair couldn't the ps4 use a SSD? I haven't looked much into it but yeah

DANGIT. I just bought a 120 GB HD for my PS3 from Gamestop. I have a fat 60 GB and finally upgraded...a little early, it looks like.

It does though. There's several tests you can find on the internet where games installed around 10% faster, and games run from the hdd rather than a blu-ray disk had shorter load times.

For example, the PSN downloadable version of GTA V has longer load times, more pop-ins, and lower FPS, but a faster hard drive fixes this issue.

3.5" drive are so 2010...I wonder if two years from now they are still making 3.5" drives, let alone, platter based drives...

I highly suggest the Seagate Momentus XT 2.5 hard drive. It's hybrid, quiet, and no moving parts. That's what I'm going to get for my PS4.
That is the one I have. I didn't feel like looking it up. 500GB, 32MB Cache, 7200 rpm Seagate Momentus XT from Newegg when it was $49.99 around Black Friday of last year (but not BF). It works great.

As many can attest to, the hybrid doesn't make a huge speed difference, and the majority of gamers wouldn't know the difference unless they do direct comparisons on the same ps3 (and even then, it's only on certain games where a difference can be noticed). I can tell the difference from the previous HDD's I've had in my ps3 Phat (OEM 80GB, then a 160GB. Both were 5400 rpm), and it does not run any warmer now than it did with either the OEM 80GB, or the 160GB that was basically new (from a CAG's ps3 slim that was having the HDD upgraded the moment they opened it). I have not known of anyone (who I know well enough to trust....even online friends, of course) that has had a single issue (heat, or otherwise) running a 7200 rpm HDD in their ps3 Phat, or the original ps3 Slim's. I don't know anyone that has other versions of the ps3, so I can't comment.

Someone earlier mentioned a 1.5TB drive.........when you go that big you need to make sure the thickness isn't too great.  I think the max is 9.5mm.

It probably can. I don't see how it would benefit the system though. If the PS4 isn't made to support SSD's. Especially if you want to get a 1TB SSD. You're going to drop a lot of cash for one.
I should have structured that sentence better. I thought maybe it ran SSD over regular hd. Speed and what have you.

Why so small? You don't have PS+? Or, you must only put the games you're going to play on there?
Yeah, I don't have +. For someone who buys so many games, especially from here, I don't actually play video games that much...I mean, I certainly play my games, but I rarely download any DLC or store any media on my PS3 or anything, so those 60 GBs actually lasted a while, as long as I deleted game installs once I had finished the game for most. I might keep my files for RPGs or something with new game +, but as for something like Bioshock, I didn't need the data anymore. But anyway, 60 GB only goes so far for anyone, so I doubled up on space since I do kind of want to download Mass Effect 1 from the PS Store. 120 should keep me set till I cave on a PS4, but it would've been nice to have a full TB
