So as the title states, where should I start if I want to try Pokemon out? I never played Pokemon as a youth and want to give it a shot. Should I grab one of the older games used? Which one? Should I just grab X or Y and start there? Why does Pokemon release two games at once ala X/Y or Black/White? Thanks for any insight you might provide.

Just get X and Y. It has all the generations (to my knowledge) and everyone will be playing it. The other ones might seem a bit primitive and simple compared.

Do you have an original DS? If so, I would start with FireRed/LeafGreen. They are remakes of the originals and it will be fun to see how far the series has come since then for you.

Any one of them (save for Black 2/White 2, since they're direct sequels) should be fine.

You can start at any Pokemon game to be honest, but I'd choose X or Y just because its right around the corner and pretty much every Pokemon fan will be playing it. Plus you'll see a chunk of Pokemon from each generation.

They release 2 games at a time for the $$ (unless theres a legit reason I don't know about) haha. Each version has its own set of exclusive Pokemon so you'd have to trade or buy both versions to get them. With the whole wi-fi stuff now though it should be fairly easy to find someone willing to swap exclusives.

They eventually release a 3rd game or a sequel, but its usually different enough to justify the purchase.

Yeah, go with X or Y. If you really want to start a bit further back, then HeartGold/SoulSilver is your best bet. I wouldn't go further back than that.

I agree, I was never into Pokémon besides the anime when I was a kid. I started on HeartGold last year and love it.

Use bulbasaur for everything. He has a solar beam which is unblockable.  Some might even say its super effective.

X or Y. I really liked Black/White 2 as well; who cares if they are direct sequels, they're Pokemon games and most aren't playing for the story anyway since that's not the point of the games in the first place and they're all forgettable anyway. SoulSilver and HeartGold are nice as well.

Anyone suggesting anything earlier than HeartGold/Soulsilver is just blinded by nostalgia.

I'll admit that the old games have a special place in my heart, but they're simply outdated when put against newer versions
