DRM is a Smokescreen

For the longest time I couldn't imagine why companies continued to use intrusive DRM when it clearly never worked and on occasion plagued legitimate customers with issues.  According to this interview it's used as a smokescreen to trick investors into thinking they're protecting assets.  In retrospect, it's somewhat easier to identify why developers may or may not harp on pirates publicly.  It's entirely possible it's only half-hearted attempts to look strong under pressure from shareholders on "lost sales".

An interesting insight on the industry at the very least.  Also, IIRC the Witcher devs used their earnings to become self-publishing a few years back and thus are putting out #3 DRM free
