Retro Game Night- Any Ideas?

So recently it was discussed between my friend, his wife, myself and my gf that we will be having "Retro Game Night" once a week. His wife is having back surgery soon, so we figure it will be a good way to keep her mind off being in pain and bed ridden for a little bit.

Everyone is from a sega genesis background, so we are focusing on that system (but not limited to it). My question is- does anybody else do a similar thing with their friends? And does anyone have some games they would suggest that I pick up? My genesis collection has some good stuff, but mostly single player stuff. I am looking for any multiplayer games or single player that would be fun for a group.

Cheers!

Some Friends and I actually also do this, every now and then when we get together. We pick a game and have an all nighter on some occasions. If you want to start on the Genesis I would go with nice genesis arcade titles like Altered Beast,  Space Harrier, Golden Axe, or Streets of Rage. I would say a Sonic game, But how many times has everyone beaten those games... any way if your really trying to go hardcore, try and beat Kid Chameleon with you and all your friends playing it.

Gunstar Heroes is a must play.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is also a great puzzle game for groups.

If you are up for some torture, try playing Gaiares. In my 35+ year gaming career, it's still the hardest game I've ever played. Seriously. It took me over a week just to get past the first level. I still consider that a victory.

Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, NBA Jam (it's more an arcade sports game so if you don't like the modern NBA games, might still be fun for you) are all good on the Genesis for multiplayer.

Some good suggestions above, I would add the following though:

Toejam and Earl (though it may be a bit slow paced for the spectators)

Road Rash 1 - 3

Dynamite Headdy (single player game obviously, but it's quirky enough to be fun to watch)

Columns

NHL '94 (or other variants, hockey to me is one of the best multiplayer sports games if you have the 4 player option, even if all you are doing is checking each other for injuries  )

Expanding off of NHL 94, the Genny had one of the best sports libraries if your crowd is more into that, can branch off into the Mutant League Football / Hockey games as well.

I was always a Super Nintendo guy myself, so I'm not entirely sure about Genesis mult-player. I know it has some fun fighters like Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters.

I have not ever done this, but I would totally do it if some of my friends were ever interested. There's been times where a friend would come over and we'd play on the Nintendo or Super NES, but we never made a full day of fun with it.

sadly, i sold my cib copy of gaires a few years back when i was a starving undergrad. it is truly difficult! i dont think anyone else would have a stomach for it besides me.

Hellfire is what always really gave me problems. I really sucked at that game!

NHL 94 is the first really good one I remember playing on the Genesis, and subsequently after renting it the only one my brother and I bought and repeatedly play.

Battletoads, battletoads double dragon, x-men. Michael jackson moonwalker is one player but really basic and fun to watch. I often do this on nes. The favorite is always rc pro am 2 and super dogeball. Dodgeball gets fierce.

Me and a friend spent way too many hours on Revolution X. Be forwarned if you pick it up, it's more of a gloriously bad game than an actual good game.

The Bomberman games are (almost) always pretty great as party games.  Some of them include a 2P story mode as well.

Battletoads,

Not so much for two player, though

Hmm...Sega night with MP?? For me this would consist of: TMNT: Hyperstone Heist, Streets of Rage (any or all of them), Sonic series, and/or the Road Rash games.

If there are going to be female participants, I would strongly recommend exploring some classic point-and-click adventure games. It is my experience that this is a genre that goes over well with the ladies. It means a bit more passive participation on the part of a group, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Any of the Lucas Arts games are an easy choice, as well as King's Quest VI. (the best of the Sierra fare) The Space Quest series is also an easy sell with it's strong humorous leanings.

I love Retro Game Night. I've been doing these about once a month for well over a year now and we always have a blast. I'm from a NES/SNES background so my (vast) knowledge base if of those titles if you are ever interested in getting involved with those. I put together a Facebook group so all my friends could join and talk about old school gaming. I like using the group to post times/dates for game night so everyone can plan ahead and make sure they are available. We used to shuffle between everyone's houses but I got a new big screen that everyone can watch in my family room (our old one was dead for a long time so it was harder to cram everyone into my room) so we pretty much just play at my house now. Which is awesome for me, as I used to lug around my entire collection (well the NES/SNES stuff usually) and now that I have about 400 carts between the two its become nearly impossible to bring everything to another house. The Retron 5 coming out will make it easier to play at someone else's house since I won't have to bring over multiple systems, but the library size is still an issue. Going forward I'll have to just pre-select carts for us to play when we meet at someone else's house.

Oooh, oooh!  This thought just occurred to me and is really for other people since OP says there's back surgery involved.

Set up a couple of consoles and small televisions around a dining room table.  Have a race, Nintendo World Championship style where you have to accomplish a certain goal at one game before you move onto the next station.   Set a time limit and the winner is the one that gets the highest score or progresses the furthest in the last game in the allotted amount of time.  For example, set up a Genesis at the first monitor with Sonic.  When a player completes the first level, they get up and move to an SNES and the first level of Donkey Kong Country.  Then they get up and move to the N64 and have to complete a lap on Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 64.  Finally at the fourth station, it's NES Tetris.  Most lines completed when time expires wins.
