My problem isn't so much the bundle, as it is limiting the choice of game to include in it. If they let you pick your game, like Walmart and MS Store, I'd gladly buy one because I'd have to buy games anyhow.

The retailers buy them in bulk, they make a profit on each console sold, the accessories and games bundled in with them are a fat layer of icing on top. I understand business, I just think the bundles are a stupid and greedy move, especially since I'm nearly going for broke just to get the system itself.

 
I got a Killzone bundle last night, but today they emailed me and said the order was canceled due to lack of stock.

Did this happen to anyone else?

You don't understand the video game business. Console margins are actually really low. Retailers take in so little with them that, after freight and other overhead, they're not meaningful profit sources on their own (although they're expensive and do boost revenue numbers nicely). Game margins are better but not spectacular, while accessory margins are above average. Many people who buy a console will need or want the bundled items -- PS Plus for online play, games to actually use the system, etc. The retailer bundles capturing margin rather than allowing sales new console owners are very likely to make to "walk" to a different seller.

While not for everyone, these are actually decent bundles compared to what we saw in the Wii's heyday. That was all controller attachment crap with no value whatsoever. Tennis rackets and fishing rods.

Companies hardly make any more on consoles which is why you see places like gamestop, best buy, etc really push service plans and accessories. They seriously make like, $10-$15 on consoles.

How would you feel if you were to go to grocery store during a snow storm and the only way they sold you milk is if you also bought an addition $10 worth of random groceries, some you have no taste for?

How about next time you're running out of gas, you stop at the gas station but they require to also pick up four 2liter bottles of soda, 5 candy bars, and a pack of cigarettes?

Oh you wanna buy the new COD: Ghosts? You must also buy COD: BLOPSII, CODMW3, CODMW2, COD: BLOPS, etc.

I hope someone takes severe advantage of you in a time of need or while you are trying to obtain something you very badly want, then they just say "business" since I know you'll understand.


I understand the reasoning of the bundles but they're out of hand, driving a $400 item up to $700 or $800 at times. I can understand maybe requiring you to buy the PSN+/XBox Live year (since they're nearly required). I don't even mind them packing a game in there too, but it's not packed in the PS4 box w/special packaging so I don't see the harm in allowing the customer to pick the game of their choice. It's just overall greedy and I wonder if you would be able to buy the bundle, keep the system and return the rest...I believe consumer affairs would be on your side for that.

this is kind of a scare crow argument. In no way is a console == needing food during a natural disaster, or gas (which is readily available at many gas stations).

A better argument would be that there was an energy shortage and the gas prices got jacked up sky high. Since retailers aren't allowed (AFAIK) to raise the price of the console itself, they do it artificially through bundling things together.

I have no problem with that whatsoever. It's the price of business. You want to be one of the 'first' to have an object of a limited supply? Well you should expect to pay more, rather through buying the item, or through the bundled goods.

Exploiting people/the consumer is still expoiting them. It's still price gauging. It's still a greedy business tactic. I understand the items in demand that I listed fall under different circumstances. I pre-ordered my PS4 already and have it (love it) and didn't pay an extra price than the people buying these bundles today. Even though I have one, I still don't think this is fair practice against those that want one post launch. The retailers are taking advantage of people here that is the bottom line.

This is what I was getting at. I often mince my words, but I'm not ignorant of the business side of a hobby I've been following for over two decades.
