This is pretty off topic, but I figured my Vita peeps would understand my pain more than anyone.

I have Shiren the Wanderer (complete) for Wii and two copies of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer on DS, but cart only. For several years now the Vintage Stock by my house has had a complete copy of the DS game, but I could never justify paying $15 for a third copy of the game just for the case and manual.

Yesterday I got a B1G1 coupon in my email. Since I also needed a new PS2 controller and it's the same price as Shiren, I saw this as the stars aligning. (Especially since a new Shiren game just came out today.) This was gonna be the perfect Shiren day.

So I swung by the store after work - and didn't see the DS games at all. I asked where they were, and an employee pointed into a glass shelf... where I saw a big ass box of cart-only DS games. I asked where the cases were, and the employee said they just got a new manager, who decided to save space by THROWING. THEM. ALL. AWAY.

My head imploded reading that. I want to smack that manager up-side the head and ask him what he was thinking.

What a waste. I know how you feel. Way back in the 90s, I "rescued" many boxed/complete (or just empty boxes, with or without manuals) NES games. Mostly from EB Games. Not long after I did that, they threw away all the NES boxes (probably nationwide). Tons of classic gaming boxes and manuals were lost in those days.

Unfortunately I destroyed many of my boxes back in the day too.. if only I could travel back in time. But I was just a dumb kid, the adults should've known better.

No ragrets. Nintendo designed those boxes to be too darned big. It's easier to find Japanese boxed games, and one of the reasons is because they are pretty compact.

The worst part is that they have a surprisingly large collection of PSP games with cases - displayed face-out. In some twisted logic I can't even fathom, that took precedence over not crushing the hopes and dreams of any actual collector who visited the store.

Well everything in Japan is small. 'Cept Gundam and Pochaco.

Maybe my parents raised me right... or maybe I was just held back so long with videogames that when I finally got my NES (the first console purchase that was mine alone and not for the family) I valued everything on it like a rare valuable comic book.  So every game was opened with a knife (creating a clear plastic flap at the top) so the majority of plastic stayed on the box.  Every manual was carefully looked at and then put back in the separate plastic bag that held the cart and cart sleeve ads and other stuff bundled with the game.  Every game was stored on a shelf.  I mean, I took great care of everything I bought and valued it far far above most things.  Ultimately that paid off big time when it came time to sell the majority of it.  But of course my whole collection wasn't new games.  I didn't dumpster dive (I never even knew stores threw stuff like that away!), but I did go to every single rental store within about 60 miles of my house and bought much of their stock that I didn't own as they converted away from renting NES games.  And nicely most of them were complete with boxes and booklets because they resealed the boxes for display and put the games in separate plastic clam shell boxes for renting.  That's where I eventually learned about goo gone and became a pro at removing stickers and permanent marker.

I don't understand stores that specialize in games and stuff throwing part of the content out.  It would be like comic book stores throwing covers to comics away and trying to sell the books anyway because all of the content is still there.

My local used movie/game store keeps everything.... Except Vita cases. Every single one gets tossed out. They still have freaking VHS on the shelf, but can't make room for a few Vita games?

Ugh! Yes, I feel your searing pain. And the DS games, of all systems. Those were some of the best, most sturdy cases in recent history. The most frustrating thing for me is that you couldn't be there when it happened. I once took a case for "The World Ends With You" up to the register at the local GameStop. But they didn't actually have the cart in stock. The clerk behind the counter apologized for not actually having the game, and then dropped the case in the waste bin. The case that was in near-pristine condition. I politely asked him if perhaps I could have the case, if they weren't intending to keep it anyway. He plucked it from the bin and handed it right over.

If you had only been there when the throwing-out was happening, you might have been able to get your hands on a fat pile of cases. Good condition cases are much more difficult to find and collect than bare cartridges. That manager needs to be flogged.

I understand your comparison, but sadly, GS only really cares about "new" or "used". There is no grade or concern along those lines. The value for a game with the box, is the same as a game without.

They are only concerned with how much they can stick on shelves, and what can be sold. They can barely keep track of the system they currently have in place, so while they should offer more money for games with cases, and then they could sale them for more, it's not worth their time.

Comics have a life long grading system in place, and a value based on that. While video games are more than collectible, they aren't really in the same league as comics, at least not yet. And even if you do find them equal, that's not GS business model. There are mom & pop game store who deal more with grades, and values along those lines, but GS just doesn't care.

You can get games graded.  https://cgagrading.c...ideogamegrader/

I have seen many games that were graded like this for sell on ebay through the years.

I know it's not GS's business model to appeal to game collectors... but given their business is videogames and a lot has moved to people just buying digital... you'd think eventually they will try to appeal to collectors.  I mean, they did go back and re-add all the old systems to the gs website and started buying and selling old games.  So maybe we aren't too far away from them actually caring about conditions and things.

The sad reality is that we (i.e. game collectors) aren't GameStop's target market.   GameStop's target market is Soccer Moms and DudeBros.

You are getting a brand new copy in prefect condition graded.  It has nothing to do with used.

Yes, I'm well aware VG have a grading system, but it's only done by one or two places. Comics have a grading system in place, and guidelines for grading that go from 0.5-10, and there is a guide for each level, that anyone can follow and get close to. Most guides in the market for games or based on complete or not. There really isn't a grading system as comics have.

There really isn't a scale in place that anyone, anywhere can follow. Your left dealing with the 1-2 places who offer the process, and who or what makes them an authority?

As for GS, they would need to have staff on hand that could grade games, and pay the proper amount, and sale them at different levels based on condition, and that is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN AT GS. They pay their staff peanuts as is, and cut corners and save dollars at every turn, there is no way they are going to train staff to grade games, there just isn't any money in that for them.

Their business is based on volume, and that is why they throw out sleeves, cases and manuals without a second thought. If I remember correctly, years ago, they used to offer more for games that where complete, but somewhere along the line, that got dropped, as it was probably to much work, and to hard to track.

A place that is gutting games, and selling as "new", will have no interest in selling games to collectors, as most collectors I know aren't trading in, or buying at GS unless it's a last resort. Most collectors use forums, and avenues that other collectors use. If someone is looking to GS for fine collectibles, they might as well go to McDonald's for fine dinning, as both are just as likely to happen.

Just to get back on track, the original comment wasn't about a GS store, it was about a mom&pop store that sold used videogames picking one random platform and dumping cases when they still keep cases for pretty much everything else.  It's dumb.

We have a locally run Replay's store that is really good about putting anything up that they get in.  If it has a case, it's on the shelf.  If it doesn't it's under glass.  I wish more stores out there were like that.  I'd certainly buy more physical games.  As is, it's easier to just wait for a sale and buy digital.

As for GS, it actually works to my benefit in the long run that they don't care so much.  I've bought many games during 4 for $10 or 4 for $20 sales... or buy 2 get 1... that were complete and in near perfect condition (minus removing a few stickers... which for a collector shouldn't be a deal breaker as it's easy to do).  Heck I've bought many used games that were new and just converted to used.  It's a good place to sometimes get a bargain.  Just not once  system is past it's prime.  Then, they get nasty and gut games down to their actual disc or cart and become a waste for me to bother with.  For current stuff though, they fit in well with how I collect on the cheap.

Mom & Pop stores though have to do something to make it worth going into.  They can't just emulate the GS motto of volume volume volume.  They need to cater to the people that buy old games and many of them are going to be more picky than current shoppers.  Not all of them are, but a lot will.

The game I was looking forward to the most, God Wars, isn't listed? I thought I saw another list saying that it will be released in 2016.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II is coming out so soon. I'm not ready. I haven't bought or played the first one. Do you think the lionheart edition and standard edition will drop in price once the second game comes out?
I'm not sure if I should get it before the second game comes out.

DragonFantasy: The Black Tome of Ice: Special Edition (TBA)

It was posted by Olengie in the LRG thread that Josh from LRG twitter posted that this is coming in September.  I wanted to post something more in lines with... "Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.".  Oh well, no final day yet but at least there is a month.

While it's cool this is coming out, The Black Tome of Ice is just an update/DefinitiveEdition of the SECOND game in the series.  Had this been a bundle with the first, I think it would be a much better buy.

There's a chance given that GS has quite a bit of them left. You can probably sit it out but I wouldn't wait too long after CSII comes out.

Oh and no, don't even try to play CSII before CSI. You MUST play CSI to know what is going on in the sequel.

Does anyone know if Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni is being sold anywhere other than Rice? I want it for my complete set, but I REALLY don't want to pay the shipping they are charging. Brexit or not, the U.K. is still part of the EU until the formal paperwork is filed.

3 things on the list I'm interested in:
Criminal Girls 2
Valkyrie Drive
Trails of Steel II

Will be able to wait on price drops, but I wouldn't mind paying full price for a standard edition of Valkyrie Drive without that outrageous shipping cost =( so hopefully Amazon, Best Buy or GameStop?

Amazon will probably have Valkyrie Drive listed closer to its release date. Gal*Gun is listed there currently, and that's also from PQube/RiceDigital.

The shipping increase is not about Brexit, but rather about Rice moving to courier delivery probably based on damage and loss when shipping various items outside of the UK.  I just hope that their packaging is decent as couriers can be just as rough as regular shipping companies.
