I did a top 10 on my Giant Bomb page, so if you wonder why the hell I have so many music games on my list, why it's all 360 games, and what kind of idiot ranks the first Saints Row games over the later entries, I talk about each game there. http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/kanerobot/lists/game-of-the-generation-my-top-10/87081

But the short answer is: I really fucking liked music games this generation.

Here's the list, starting with 1-10, followed by a few honorable mentions in no particular order.

GOTG: Rock Band 3
2nd: Mortal Kombat
3rd: Mark of the Ninja

7th: The Beatles Rock Band
8th: Halo 4
9th: Battlefield Bad Company 2

The Walking Dead: Season 1

Skyrim

Mafia 2

Bioshock

Assassin's Creed

Oblivion

Super Mario Galaxy

Dead Space

Not mention here a lot but definitely Red Dead. Best R* game ever & my #1game this gen follow by TLoU, UC2 & Skyrim

This is honestly one of the hardest list to come up with... so ill just throw a somewhat coherent list together.

Super Meat Boy - a very addicting game because of the ease of one last time retry.

Hotline Miami - for the same reason of SMB,  I spent countless hours attempting to master a level.

Mass Effect 2 -  I attempted to play 1 & 3 but 2 was so hooking on in-game "choice" and I loved the combat/gameplay the game provided.

The Stanley Parable - I love the narration and non-choice the game provides.  I have spent a good amount of time thinking of attempting different endings.  This game also put a smile on my face everytime i play it.

Uncharted 2 - The graphics literally felt the next gen came.  The graphics were supported by beautiful set pieces and great gameplay.   I remember the opening sequence and i had my controller down,  then i wondered why drake was not moving.

Viva Pinata -  In the lime light of Gears of War 1, I remember playing this game more and having a lot more fun.  The art/graphics were also beautiful.

Battlefield 3 - the gameplay wasn't that great compared to other battlefields but this game hits personally level by playing with a friend for 200+ hours MP on PS3.

JC2:MP - I recently started playing this but I cant keep a smile off my face with playing in a super boost server.. especially in a derby match.

Skate Series - I cant single one of the games out because each had its highs/lows.  From Skate 1 introducing the flick-trick stick.  2 creating a great world to skate . and 3 with hardcore mode and park creation, but I know I sent countless hours playing each game of the series.

Team Fortess 2 - I started playing this game before the hats and micro transactions..  And recently (last month) got back into the game and I still love the gameplay even without buying items/crafting.  The gameplay and feel is solid and hope it will stand the test of time.

Left 4 Dead Series - So many great personal memories of playing with friends and built with solid gameplay.

Call of Duty 2 - I remember seeing this game played at a B&M kiosk, and saying to myself "This is truly next gen"

Call of Duty 3 - more of a personal memory of being on top of the leaderboards for medic and capture the flag games.  I could not get enough of the multiplayer and alot of great people on X360

Portal Series - The cleverness of writing/narration was top-notch at the time and i loved the gameplay.

Red Dead Redemption - What a beautiful game but I do hate Mexico..

Catherine -  Solid Puzzle Gameplay with a weird but gripping story.

Rayman Origins -  Beautiful Art Direction with stellar gameplay

I know I am probably missing a ton of games that I love this generation, but this generation felt it lasted a life time and I certainly cannot catch every game..

This would be a very difficult list to make for me. This generation was fantastic. Games that marked the new generation for me was wii sports and gears of war. I would like to see some kind of poll so we could do a collective list, everyone making their own lists is too much to read.

Fallout 3

NHL 11 (most played game)

Skyrim

Killzone 2

Dishonored

Also forgot to add Deadly Premonition to my list, which am surprised hasn't been mentioned yet.

I can't narrow it down to 10 games, but I will tell you an advancement in gaming that made me happy and wish more devs would do it. Being able to unlock MP weapons/abilities/loadouts while playing through single player - Killzone Mercenary. Sometimes the beginning weapons are just shitty in shooters and it'd be nice to play through the campaign and unlock your favorites in MP for a better chance for beginners

the absolute top of the list:

1.  Mass Effect:  I have never been so immersed by a video game world before.  The settings, the characters, the dialogue, everything is great.  Yes some of the gameplay is rough but its a beautiful game and always brings a smile to my face.  And the ending missions are among the best in gaming history IMO.

2.  Skyrim:  Another deeply immersing game.  I have over 200 hours into it and still have some side quests and DLC to finish up.  Gorgeous graphics and a limitless amount of things to do.

3.  Mass Effect 2:  Refined many things from the first and improved the gameplay side. Hooks you in the first 10 minutes of the game. Add in the variable ending choices and structure and it is one of the best.

4.  Fallout New Vegas:  A great amount of exploration, dialogue content, and a unique setting that I have found makes a really enjoyable game.  I got it for $10 new (my first ever CAG deal) which makes it even better.

5.  Grand Theft Auto V:  While the online aspect fell short of Rockstar's hopes, the single-player experience is still top-notch for exploration and humor.  Plus the three character approach is different and works well.

Honorable mentions....

Halo 3 and Halo 4 (Reach fell a little flat for me)

Red Dead Redemption (would be higher on the list but Mexico was far too dreadfully long)

Uncharted 3 (first two are in my backlog as I'm new to PS3 gaming but I really liked U3)

Grand Theft Auto IV (the game that initially got me to get a 360)

Super Mario Galaxy (very good Wii experience)

Super Smash Bros Brawl (not as good as Melee but still many good sessions with friends)

Assassins Creed 2 (loved the setting)

Mass Effect 3 (ending issues aside this was still a solid game)

Portal 2

Wii Sports

Wii Sports Resort

Arkham Asylum

Arkham City

Far Cry 3

Lego Star Wars

Lego Pirates

Lego Marvel

Just finished The Last of Us couple days ago.

To me such a masterpiece comes once in a generation. It was so powerful.

I will also say that Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) would probably fall into my Games of the Generation. After such a long wait for a proper Donkey Kong game, Retro hit it out of the park by making not only a damn good platformer, but a challenging throwback to the SNES days. I just started playing it a couple days ago and I can hardly put it down. PS3... PS4... You guys are gonna have to wait for some loving until DKCR is finished

You know what? I'm going to try to narrow it down as far as possible. these are in no particular order

Killzone Mercenary (Playstation Vita)

Maybe not the best shooter on the market, but hands down the best the Vita has to offer. The controls are smooth and responsive - especially for a handheld title. The multiplayer made great strides by making it possible to have any and all unlocks carry over from the campaign to the online multiplayer. Also not a groundbreaking advancement in gaming, but something I wish more developers would adopt

Borderlands 1/2 (Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

A fun colorful lootathon that's equally as enjoying playing either by yourself or with 3 friends. With a bijillion different weapon combinations, frantic action, great controls, and tons of DLC for both games, Gearbox found a way to rejuvenate the FPS genre right when it was getting to be way too stale

Gears of War series (Xbox 360)

A chainsaw on the end of a gun... Need I say more?

Batman Arkham series (Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

Right when I had given up hope on there being any good Superhero games EVER, Batman Arkham Asylum showed up and blew me away. Each installment (IMO) has just gotten better and better with new implementations and better visuals. All we need now is for Rocksteady to take all of the series' greatness and channel it into a Batman Beyond game

Tomb Raider (Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

I never played a Tomb Raider game before the 2013 reboot, so naturally I went in sceptical about all the high praise it was getting at first. Without much of a tutorial and being thrown headfirst into the action, I was almost immediately hooked. Aside from bland characters and piss-poor multiplayer, Tomb Raider is not only one of the best games of 2013, but also one of the best games to get on a last-gen console

The Last of Us (Playstation 3)

I didn't follow a single story regarding this game before launch. I kept hearing people talk about how sweet it looked on just about every gaming forum I visited, but didn't pay it much attention. Once it was released and the reviews started popping up, I had to see what all the hype was about. Needless to say, I didn't regret dropping those $60 for even a single second. Sometimes things are popular for a good reason - because THEY'RE GOOD

God of War 3 (Playstation 3)

After the ball slap God of War 2 left us with before it walked out of the room, I was kind of pissed at the series for pulling a Halo 2 on us. Once march 2010 rolled around and it was time to start cutting the heads and limbs off the best Greek mythology had to offer, it was clear Santa Monica Studios was hard at work the past 4 years crafting one of the most visually pleasing and fun games video games had ever seen. It's a shame the series started plummeting in quality after GoW3, but this game can still be held up as one of Playstation's finest

Posting this from my phone, I'll go back and revise it tomorrow.

1. Halo 3

I had to of sunk 3,000+ hours into this game. I met my some of my best friends through it. Not to mention it was one of the last competitively viable first person shooters on console.

Alan Wake
Alice: Madness Returns
Assassins Creed Series, namely ACII
Batman: Arkham City
Bioshock: Infinite
Castle Crashers
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Grand Theft Auto V
Mass Effect Series, namely Mass Effect 2
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Peggle
Red Dead Redemption
Skyrim
The Last of Us
Tomb Raider
Uncharted Series, namely Uncharted 2

Just a note, some of these games are by no means the the greatest games of all time. Just the games that always come to mind whenever I think about my favorite games of the past generation
