Great show as usual, but GoDaddy has dropped the ball so hard as of late that it pains me now when the ad comes around.

Ahhh....how many more episodes do I have to endure hearing Cheapy rave about how good an actor Matthew McConaughey is?? Does True Detective give McConaughey an excuse to take off his shirt to show off his chiseled abs? Everything I have ever seen him in always has him shirtless at some point.

BTW...good show guys! Always entertaining.

Matthew McConaughey was absolutely tremendous in Dallas Buyers Club. He was also great in Mud, earlier this year.

I will have to check those out! Thanks!

Oh, I do agree that Microsoft's use of the word "ditch" in their PS3 trade-in program did strike me as odd and somewhat unprofessional.

Loved the arguing at the end regarding Apple. Wombat hit the nail on the head as to why I wouldn't want one, not to mention if I did want to play shitty games on my tv for cheap, the Ouya already exists. Which is funny considering the argument earlier in the podcast as to "who wants to play these old Virtual console games?". Considering a good chunk of those games are leaps and bounds better than android/ios games, I don't know how one would argue the latter over the former.

But people will still buy it. Why? Because Ship and Cheapy are also correct. It's Apple.

I'm glad Wombat isn't taking percocet and driving around with the kiddos in tow. I once took one morphine pill (stronger than percocet but not by much) and drove to Blockbuster to get a movie (yes, mid 90s). I don't remember the drive, which must've been 10 or more miles, and I fell out of the car in the parking lot.

The not drinking one beer thing IS weird though, especially knowing Wombat's preference in beer, Budweiser, which is basically flavored water.

Excellent show this week - even if Wombat veered eerily close to SNL "Drunk Uncle" towards the end of the show.

I haven't seen those, but for most of his career his greatest achievement was not being bad enough to ruin Contact. He's been painfully bad in everything I've seen him in.

Edit: his other big achievement was playing bongos naked.

I just played Gears 1 in December because it was free on Gold, and found it very annoying as a single player game on Hardcore difficulty.  The buddy AI was terrible, and so were the checkpoints later on in the game.  Maybe they tightened up those issues for the sequels, though.

Whatever sales number it is, the PS4 is going to get there first, Wombat.  The worldwide demand for the PS4 is significantly higher, and their production capacity is at least as good. Microsoft didn't make more Xbox Ones than Sony made PS4s.  Sony sold 4.2m consoles to consumers by the end of 2013, which is more than the number MS shipped to retailers - 3.9m.

I'm going to agree with Wombat about the Apple game console/Apple TV that plays games/whatever the hell they call it. Sure, it's cool that it plays your iPhone/iPad games on your TV, but most mobile games just aren't worth it. I would just rather play them on my phone or tablet. Of course, I'm not really an Apple person, so this wouldn't be for me.

I agree with Wombat about the 3DS competing with the Wii U. If I can play Mario 3D land, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, NSMB 2, Zelda Link to the Past, etc on my 3DS why do I need a Wii U?

I don't think there is anything Nintendo can do to turn the Wii U around.  Nintendo has all the tools to succeed: they have a ton of cash, a loyal fanbase, and many beloved IPs yet they lack the key ingredient to make this all work and that is good leadership.  Nintendo's fundamental problem is with the people running the company.  They just don't understand the modern consumer.  The PS Vita has more connectivity to the PS3/PS4 then any of Nintendo's handhelds and home consoles. It doesn't make any sense, Nintendo has been in the industry far longer than both Microsoft and Sony, they should be ahead of the game not decades behind.

Another thing is the Pokemon IP. The Pokemon IP is far more popular than the Legend of Zelda IP yet Nintendo wont make a Pokemon game on home consoles with the same budget or production value as a Zelda game? This makes absolutely no sense to me, a Pokemon game on consoles could be huge.  They could of made a game like Skylanders or a trading card game like Hearthstone to make sure its different enough from the handheld Pokemon games. A home console Pokemon Trading card game where you can turn the pokemon you catch on the handheld versions into cards to use in the home console game would be sweet. On the Gamecube or Wii this could have been huge but now it's probably too late.

I hope someone just buys Nintendo, they have too much potential to be wasted on crap like the Wii U or this Quality of Life nonsense they are moving towards.

Garden Warfare should have split the difference and come in at a $50 price point and excluded microtransactions. That way, they still retain the "cheaper than other games" price, and they would have gotten $10 more out of everybody who buys the game... which is definitely $10 more than they'll get from my in-game purchases.

However, I know most of my friends are skeptical of paying even $40 for a PopCap game. They're leery of the amount of game they'll be getting for that price, as that's such a huge increase over normal (and proven) PvZ. I'm skeptical of the game for a different reason: Mario Sport Syndrome. I'm afraid each character will have a single "supermove" animation that I'll have to sit through over and over and over.

Edit: Also, microtransaction content in multiplayer is a bad idea. If I'm playing against beefed-up opponents on Day One, I'll be cutting my losses and walking away.

The apple game console rumor has been around for years, I don't think they will release one. Maybe they will just add airplay to all apps or something (I've never used airplay). Personally I have no interest in playing my iphone games on my tv, the only time I play them if I have to wait for a long time period and don't have my 3ds.

Great show and I always like to be mentioned on the show.

After hearing Wombat get progressively Perc'd up over the course of the show, I have a few observations:

  1. While I initially was with Cheapy's opinion that Wombat was being overly cautious, I think I'm now firmly in the camp that Wombat shouldn't drive his children while on prescription drugs.
  2. High Wombat may be overly emotional in some of his responses, but he actually makes a lot of good points, even if I found myself laughing at the delivery---which was not at all dissimilar to conversations I had with one particular friend in college when he was stoned out of his mind.
  3. Shipwreck has no patience for high people.
Well done, gentlemen.

Also, I'm jonesing for those JazzPunk codes....

Wombat makes an awesome case for Wii U troubles.

Maybe the market just isn't there for 2 separate 1st-party only Nintendo platforms.

Other than that very possible conclusion, I think the problem here in the west is still high price, lack of games and no one really knowing what the system is exactly.

Old games aren't the answer.  I think Nintendo needs its own stores to show off its product.  A store in every major city.

Wombat should take prescription drugs every week, his unstable rantings about Nintendo actually started to make a weird kind of sense.

Shipwreck complaining about Infamous and revealing he does every side mission and collects every shard was the highlight here though.

Hi Cheapy!

I brought myselft a Neft gun and the thing is amazing! I Brought the Nerf Rebelle Heartbreaker Bow Phoenix beaucse i watched Arrow aha!

The problem is my son got hold of it and i let him have a go and he shot my in the eye and know i have a black eye aha!

I know it's hard for Cheapy to believe, but the Nintendo Wii sold more games (not just consoles) than the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The Wii also has seven titles that sold more than the top selling Xbox 360 and PS3 game. As far as sales are concerned, the Wii won the 7th generation.

Also, there is already a console that plays Phone games on your TV. It's called an OUYA.

Lay off Wombat for being a good parent. I say this in jest: He doesn't leave his kid a note in the middle of the night as he goes to the hospital.

Those are some crazy prices for JCC and TAC, wow.

Someone pointed this out earlier, but I'm laughing at Cheapy and Ship saying "boo" to classics like (for example) Super Mario RPG or any number of great PS1/PS2 games on their WiiU/PS4, but then are all for crappy flappy bird on the TV with an extra Apple console they don't need.

I really feel you shouldn't accept any macrotransactions in any paid console game in this next gen, even $10-$15 games. You may feel that you won't need to purchase anything now, but there will come a game that they force it in, change the gameplay (for the worse) so you basically have to use them, and it's a franchise you love. By then it'll be too late.

I'm shocked Elder Scrolls Online is going to try and get away with a $15/month subscription, wonder how that will work out, I predict bad. The free month is nice to try and get people addicted to the MMO, as a month isn't usually enough to finish much content, but I also think it will turn more people away from the game in general and losing out on all those $60 purchases. I think FF14 gets away with it because it was $40 (and even went on sale for $10-$20), Final Fantasy has a bigger fan base, plus the JP market.

Great show, as always.

My 5 cents:

- I'll never understand the commonly held notion that brick and mortar stores won't want to sell a console that doesn't let them sell games too  (excluding Gamestop since they have a vested interest in the used game market).  Did they not want to sell MP3 players because it would hurt CD sales?  Uhhhh, no.

The money made on game sales is pretty small, 8 dollars on a full price game I think.  Selling game download cards is cheaper on shipping and they are easier to manage than games.

Consoles take up space, but so do vacuums and pc's.

Besides which, console makers throw B&M stores a bone anyways by not including HDMI cables, which they can sell for a way bigger markup than any game.

- I was pretty much done with Gears by the 3rd game, which I actually have yet to finish.  But the franchise is by no means dead.

My vote would be to reboot the trilogy for every generation.  Just so long as it's not a lazy reboot.  Keep the core characters and general storyline (planet under attack by gross monster things) and have free reign to change everything else.

- I'm having trouble re-conciling these opinions from the last few weeks:

* PS Now is something that few people want;

* Nintendo VC is something that will save the WiiU;

* Games on AppleTV are a gamechanger.

All 3 offer lesser experiences at resolutions that don't fit a modern TV.  Any or all of them have limited appeal, none of them are gamechangers.

- Wombat was totally spot on questioning why not make a game 70 or 80 bucks if it has no microtransactions (or even DLC).  Have we already forgotten that PS1 era games were 40, PS2 were 50, and PS3/360 games were 60??

And Cheapy, haven't you mentioned that in Japan, games are priced according to demand and are not all set at the same price?

- I've raged about microtransactions in the past, but only when it seems obvious the difficulty was spiked to entice spending real money, or if the game advertises it's stuff all throughout the game.

If they are just there and not needed by most people, who cares?

Wombat is on a roll recently. The recent discussion about Machinama, this weeks discussions about Nintendo, and the nonsense of Apple TV gaming.  I'm quite pleased with your recent commentary.

Cheapy, I don't see how you can defend the idea of AppleTV gaming.  With the announcements of things like Ouya and Madcatz's Microconsole, you were always quick to say "Who is looking to play android games on their TV?"  You saw these products as useless and knew they would have no impact on the gaming industry.  But you brand loyalty to Apple seems to once again be clouding your judgement.  Micro consoles are a very limited market, and even though apple products sell strong, there are no large number looking to play iphone games on their TVs.

Another thing Cheapy, I think you owe Wombat a man card for not giving into the pain of his Root Canals in order to maintain himself as a sober parent.  Anything can happen with kids.  As a fellow American living in Japan, I was quick to defend you to other listeners when you left Tai at home by himself overnight.  The culture here is different and children can be expected to stay home alone from a young age. BUT Wombat taking care of his children alone, and choosing not to take medication that could keep him from driving earns him one of your man cards. Anything can happen, and if his kids need to get to the doctor or hospital, an intoxicated parent is never a good thing. Hell you live in a country with DUI laws much stricter than the states. You have no ground to stand on this time Cheapy.

Sorry to assault you Cheapy, but your comments rubbed me the wrong way this episodes.  Regardless I love the show and I love you guys.  My Friday commutes to work are always the best being able to listen to the Cagcast!  Keep up the good work!

I enjoyed the irony of Cheapy questioning Wombat's desire to avoid things that could impair his decision-making abilities around his kids in case of an emergency considering Cheapy's great decisions made in regards to Tai in past emergencies.

I'd bet that Shipwreck's wrong that Microsoft has made more Xbox Ones than Sony when the last numbers released put the PS4 at 4.2 million and Xbox One at 3 with 3.9 million shipped.

The whole Nintendo thing with the Wii U proving you don't need a 3DS or vice versa would be greatly lessened, if not solved, if they had Cross Buy in place for all Virtual Console games and all of the like eShop games. If you weren't presented with the option to have to choose between one of the other and could just have both for one price so you can enjoy the game on the Wii U when at home and transfer the save to the 3DS version to take with you while you're away from home, that would be a more compelling ecosystem than the current one that is currently crawling slowly on the floor in a direction that may one day reach that point.

I'm a huge fan of Plants vs. Zombies, having beaten it on pretty much every platform out there, and the way the sequel turned out is a travesty for me. The mobile versions of PvZ were easily the worst out there for being a shell of what the console/PC versions offered and eventually updating enough to add that stuff back in in a way that was basically the paid Free-to-Play BS that Cheapy ranted about on the show. The original FTP model had some dumb things about it (locking some plants behind a paywall) and some cool things about it (added challenges for each level for replayability), but nobody fell for the money sinks from what the charts constantly proved (near the top for downloads, but #30 to #40 for top-grossing). In response, they stripped out the FTP-style progression and made it a straight, though wavy, line that is confusing as fuck for somebody like me that was in the second world before. Now there are these odd unplayed levels that I apparently missed, but I don't know what they are or why I should play them or what's going on now. I feel like I should erase the save and start over because I don't have the context for how I got to where I am now.

Wow. Wombat's voice changed quite a bit during the show.

It's weird that this is the week where everybody is talking about the upcoming PS+ lineup on podcasts. CAGcast and Weekend Confirmed talked about it when that never really happened before, as they'd barely talk about it unless there was an opportunity to rant about how Xbox Live isn't offering enough value compared to PS+. I guess there really isn't much in the way of news to talk about right now.

I think the time of the Wii U has passed.  I think Nintendo needs to keep their loses to a minimum and prepare for their next more powerful console.  This means boosting their online presence and coming up with some kind of gaming subscription model.

I am still not sure what was so gross about the Microsoft Store offer.  I thought it was much to do about nothing.  I salute Wombat's stance on Santa.  At this point I am not really sure he represents much to do with Christianity, and more to do with the general holiday season.

As someone who has never bought a Blu-Ray and has no real plans to buy them in future I have no problem with a disc less based Xbox One.  If I were given the option I would have have opted for this version since Microsoft ditched their original DRM plan which made buying disc desirable.  Now I have no desire to buy disc so I just wait for price drops either on the digital store or the gift cards.

I agree with Wombat the Apple TV as a gaming console is about as exciting as the Oya.  Why would a parent want their kids taking up the television when they already spend hundreds of dollars on tablets?  I am not sure these small games translate very well on the big screen.

I never considered the 3DS competition for the Wii U but Wombat made some solid points. While it's true that Super Mario 3D Land is not the same as 3D World, look at the number of people that confuse the two titles. It's kind of a Catch 22 for Nintendo though because it should be making all of its franchise games for the portable system that's selling, so to make these titles only for one system and not the other would be seriously crippling one of its products.

I do, however, have to strongly disagree with the Percocet-fueled rant from Wombadad about how the Wii U sales would be helped by implementing a way to play old virtual console games. I know there's a lot of Nintendo nostalgia out there, but the people that would buy into a streaming service for old Nintendo games are Nintendo die-hards, and those are the people that would buy the Wii U no matter what. You might get the occasional regular gamer that would buy an old SNES game, but there's no way you're getting the average gamer to spend money on a streaming subscription for games on top of paying $350 for a console, ESPECIALLY when the PS4 is just $50 more.

Nintendo's biggest problem with the Wii U (aside from the name, which Cheapy has nailed since the start), is that the Wii created an audience for Nintendo that doesn't play games regularly. Sure, the Wii might have been the highest selling console last generation, but how many of those people that you know have Wiis play them regularly? Or at all? My parents have a Wii and haven't taken it out of the box. Nintendo "fooled" (that's a good word for it, Cheapy) a lot of people into buying the thing and I imagine the number of people who bought it that would never buy another system again is quite high. For most people, the Wii was a one-time purchase and they're done with video games. Why does a grandmother who has Wii Sports need to buy a Wii U, which doesn't have anything similar to offer her? Nintendo created a following of non-gamers who of course aren't going to buy a Wii U because they aren't gamers.

1. Cheapy is 100% correct about the micro transactions - full price and free content or low price (maybe free) and micro transactions. But my question is: the price of games hasn't increased all that much in 20 years despite the rising cost of producing them. Are we certain that the micro transactions are solely for profit and not a way of keeping games from being $100?

2. Wombat is dead on about the 3DS being an alternative to the Wii U. I'm not sure I agree it is directly keeping sales down but I certainly don't think I need a Wii U after seeing what my 3DS library has in it.

3. Cheapy you are a hypocrite. You argument that people will be cool with playing iOs games on the TV is the same argument you made against the Ouya - I recall you saying that nobody will want to play Android games on their TV! Granted, Apple has an incredible fan base vs the Ouya who has almost no fan base (aside from Kickstarters)... But be fair and use the fanbase as your argument, not the cell phone games on TV as your argument.

That being said, I think Shipwreck (since he buys every system anyhow) needs to check out an ouya. You can get one used for cheap, and if you like indy games at all you will love some of what it has to offer. Cheapy would like some of the quick play games too, but he's too stubborn (or up apples butt) to even consider it so no sense trying to convince him.

Overall, probably your best show in over a year! Nice work!

My bad O:) I seem to recall that was your beer of choice at Guy's Crappy Restaurant on Uninformed Opinions. Just assumed that if you went to a restaurant and ordered a Bud, that it must be your top choice.

I had a German Import at Guy's (can't remember the name). I don't think I have had a Bud since college.

You're not crazy wombat, it's probably best not to be caring for kids (or driving) under narcotics. If you drink the beverage slowly (over an hour or so) I doubt you'll ever feel any of the effects, that's something we Americans are so bad about, binge drinking.

The first episode of Masters of Sex is pretty T&A heavy since it's the pilot and might have been mandated by showtime (kind of like Strike Back seems to mandate a sex scene every episode for no reason). By the 2nd or 3rd episode that cuts down and by the hack half of the season there is hardly any nudity at all. You should stick with it Wombat, at least give it a couple more episodes.

Though under the terms of the Gears of War deal, the prior development studio is no longer working on Gears games. I could see the franchise running out of gas if an installment or two of the quality is low, they already have the middling GoW: Judgment on the books.

Matthew McConaughey was good in Frailty which was a little horror movie that no one saw, but he didn't really start his "serious actor" phase until 2011's Lincoln Lawyer so I could see why many still have the "alright alright," shirtless perception of him.

It's a trick Peter Rabbit, don't get in the van!

Yeah he just throws an ipad in her face so he can watch 'Chopped'.

The problem with wombats view of the Apple Console, it is extremely limited by his current situation. Your kids won't be toddlers forever and they eventually learn to use a controller pretty easily. Plus if you know anything about the ios market you know how fluid it really is and devs could easier come up with stuff that take advantage of the system.

lol, I was hoping and looking forward to hearing CheapyD's first impressions of 'Dark Souls' during the last hours of the fundraiser campaign streams, but all he did was talk about 'Hearthstone'. -_-

lol! :p

Started playing Loadout yesterday with a friend, and it's pretty damn fun. I like how it is impossible to buy gun parts with real money, it's all in-game currency for those. Real money only buys cosmetic things. That's the way to do it.

Completely agree with Wombat about the Apple TV console. It sounds incredibly pointless and a waste of money. However, I don't like mobile games at all in general, so it could never appeal to me in the first place.

Also, speaking of Apple - have they announced they're making a smartwatch, or is that just Cheapy being his usual Apple fanboy self? He's mentioned it numerous times, but I wonder if there is solid proof or if he is just assuming.

Well I'll be damned. Went back and gave it a listen and you did infact have a Hefeweizen. Christian said you had a Budweiser and you corrected him. I'm going to slink away now and never attempt wit on the internet again..... ;)

Yeah it's weird? that recently Wombat seems spot on (even when on painkillers). It's a bit silly that even on prescription drugs he has become the "voice of reason".

Too bad there's no way to clip out his explaination of the Machinama thing and have the whole Internet listen to it ... it would greatly educate folks and prevent a lot of dumb Internet rage.
