Think I've Been The Victim of Identity Theft- Please Help

CAGiversary!
Kind of freaking out right now, hoping someone here can help me because I have absolutely no idea what to do.
Just got a letter in the mail addressed to me. It's a bill from Sears Credit Cards in my name. The name is spelled correctly and the address is basically correct, but it doesn't have my unit number on it, which was the first sign that something was up (I guess the mailman read the name on the mailbox to get it to me). The amount of the bill is for $2,216 and the statement reads that the transaction is for "Protection Agreement Refrigerators/Freezers, Laundry Delivery Charges", dated 02/22. The bill has an account number for it.
I have NEVER owned a Sears card and I have no idea what this is for. What do I do, call them, write to them? Who else do I notify? How long would it take to clear myself of this crap?

If someone could let me know what my first steps should be I would really appreciate it. I had a great credit history until now (I last checked it in 2012) and worked really hard to keep it that way in case I need to use it, so this is really causing me to panic. I have never even been late on a credit card payment. I feel so helpless right now, I hate that some scumbag out there has my information and is using it to cause havoc.
One other thing, a few years ago, I had a charge that I didn't make for a few thousand dollars on a separate unrelated Visa credit card, I told the bank about it immediately, and they sorted it out pretty quickly and when I checked the credit report after a while and it was not on it. I never heard anything about it after that. I'm wondering if this could be related? This is worrying me more because the old case was a bad charge on a credit card I already owned, which means someone just somehow got the card number. But this new problem suggests that someone might have all kinds of information on me. I don't even know if the person who did this has my real social security number or if they used some other one. I won't go into my other life problems but let's just say I really, REALLY don't need this right now.

Needless to say, any help from anyone who has been through something similar, or who has experience dealing with this would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks.

Hate to be negative but I heard that sometimes identity theft is something that sticks with you for years. I hope in your case that won't happen. I would definitely call Sears, contact the police, they should be able to refer you to somewhere and maybe even call a lawyer if you know one.

Best of luck.

I think you can call the reporting bureaus and tell them to immediately put a notice on your ssn so no new accounts can be opened.

Ok, thanks to all of those who posted helpful responses. A little calmer today; having slept on it, I realized many many people probably go through this, and I shouldn't really panic.

I checked two of the three main credit reports, looks like the only problem area right now on either of them is this Sears thing, so at least I don't have other ID theft issues to deal with right now (hopefully). But the Sears account is already on both of the credit reports, so I guess that means the person who did this did somehow use my SSN and not just my name/address.

I called Sears and told them, their team will be contacting me again by phone and in writing to confirm that I had nothing to do with it. I also put a "fraud alert" in with one of the main credit reporting companies (so for the immediate future, if anyone tries to open a new account with my info, I get a call about it before it can continue), who apparently automatically let the other two credit reporting companies know. Next, I'm going to file a police report just to be safe.

I also need to find a good credit monitoring company who can provide me with immediate alerts as soon as someone tries to use my ID to open a financial account. Does anyone here know of a solid company that provides reliable service in this area, that I can feel okay giving my info to?

Again, thanks for any help or advice on this. Hopefully this thread can also help anyone else here who might find themselves in this situation, I wouldn't mind if it became a "catchall" in that way.

You might want to look into getting a credit card or bank account that does free credit monitoring. That's probably the cheapest way. We are on CAG after all. ;)

Sounds like you took the right steps: contact the credit card company of the bogus account, contact the credit bureaus, and then file the police report.

Did Sears tell you when the account was opened, when the item was purchased and where it was delivered (if it was delivered)?

When I called them they wouldn't tell me anything but did say that when their fraud dept makes contact in the next few days, then I'll have the chance to ask those questions.

Thanks again to all for the input. That free credit monitoring idea is something that hadn't occurred to me, dohdough. I'll definitely look into that, since it'll be cheaper than paying a monthly fee for Lifelock or whatever (the more I read online, the more it seems those credit monitoring services are not worth the money)

Don't get life lock

A few years ago their CEO used to do commercials of a moving van driving around with his social on it and him stating nothing would happen because of their monitoring and blah ah blah, well guess what those commercials are no more now. Why? He got his identity stolen from it, his company didn't notice it for awhile, so so much for their so called services
