Question about which graphics card is better

So I'm planning on building my bro a gaming pc for his birthday this year so I've been saving up and buying him parts whenever I got enough cash. Now I already know what parts I'll be picking up but today I was casually visiting amazon when I found a graphics card that is cheaper but as far as I can tell way better than the one I was planning on getting him. now I'm no expert on this pc stuff, in fact this will be the first pc that I build myself so I wanted to come here before I buy it. so anyway here are the two cards:

if this is a stupid question I'm sorry, like I said, this is my first time building a PC.

 
Anandtech's bench comparison is the best, IMO, since you can see how two components compare to one another in real world games. They only have OEM components (ie, they have the 660 and 660 Ti, but not the vendor OC'd 660).

The 660 seems to be the better card but the 750 Ti is more efficient, quieter and runs cooler.

Unfortunately this is something that you will ask 3 people and you will get 3 different answers. Both have advantages the other one can't offer. For me it comes down to certain questions, like what else you are building the PC with and how is it being used, etc? As a gift though it may be harder to answer those questions...

Ideally I'd say wait as there will be better Nvidia Maxwell-based cards to come but again it's a gift so that may not be so easy.... So here's some quick thoughts...

For the 750ti - I will say this, as a first time builder the 750ti will be easier to install as I think the majority do not even need connected to the PSU. This is critical if you are using a micro-tower or any kind of small case for the build. Also it runs cooler and on far less power so if you did not want to build it is an ideal card to install in a good mid-range priced PC. You could throw it in say a pre-built ASUS around say $500 with an i5 processor then come out with a pretty solid gaming rig and you may not even need to upgrade the PSU.

For the 660 - It is the more powerful card though not by a huge margin, only slightly (seriously it will be difficult to tell them apart unless you are benchmarking them). If things like heat, power, noise, etc. are not concerns and your bro is planning on hooking up to play 1080p on all the latest games then this could be your choice. Though remember it will be a little harder to build with as it is larger and will no doubt need to be connect to the PSU for power so more cable runs, etc. Also it's basically old tech but when it comes to graphic cards everything is technically old tech after a year or so.
