The long and the meaty:

So I decided to pull the trigger on Powerstar Golf because I heard a lot of good buzz after the middling reviews when the Xbox One launched initially back in November. It seems, like many launch titles for the Xbox One, that this game has been supported and updated to address the feedback the developers received. I enjoy virtual golf games, (have played many Tiger Woods titles, Hot Shot Golf, Let's Golf 3D on my 3DS and can go way back to the Links days on the PC even), and Powerstar Golf has an unique style while throwing some interesting spin and cool features to the mix.

The biggest thing you'll notice as soon as you start playing is that this game feels like it was inspired off Hotshot Golf and it uses the traditional 3-click swing mechanic. The other thing you'll notice is that there's a certain style achieved here. The developers, who previously have only done Zumba & other casual dance games, call Powerstar Golf's style a sort of Future Past or "forward-thinking nostalgia" with the setting taking place in an alternate history timeline. You'll notice one of the main characters as a chisel jawed well built male Astronaut inspired from the 1950s and the game's tonal setting inspired by Norman Rockwell paintings. There's also the slinky and slender female characters as well as a few caddies to match the game's unique artstyle. The game itself has character while still feeling relatively realistic. That's in large part to the gorgeous visuals and the pretty decent physics engine working under the hood.

Another performance piece you might notice under the hood is the way the game builds on the strengths of the Xbox One's cloud-infused social features with leaderboards, friend records and Rivals Mode where you battle out your friends in a live turn based fashion. I found myself trying to beat my friend's longest putts and closest to the pin records, with much joy in accomplishing such tasks, because due to being a level 1 golfer, yeah this is a Golf RPG game actually, I played to my strengths and ignored my weakness, (in this case that would be longest drive records). That'll come in time, as over the course of playing you'll gain experience based on how well you hit the ball, where it lands, if you had a good recovery from a bad previous swing or just simply related to your final score for the whole. There will also be optional challenges that'll pop up from time to time in order for you to gain additional experience if completed. After the round is over you'll get a final tally on XP and currency, which you'll be able to apply to the in-game store.

Set up like the packs purchased with random items and power-ups from say Mass Effect 3, or recently Plants vz Zombies: Garden Warfare, Powerstar Golf let's you unlock new power-ups, balls, putters, irons, drivers, etc. It's all about the gear, which boosts the player's specific stats, and that's the biggest love it or hate it thing with Powerstar Golf. The gear obtained via store packs, purchased with the currency you earn playing through a round of 18 holes, adds to your character stats, increasing your number of abilities you can use, allowing you to hit the ball harder and farther, gain more accuracy on your shot-which in turn gives you more of a sweat spot to hit while swinging your club, and ultimately betters your golf character in getting a higher probability of a better score. The abilities are tied to the character currently being used and also the caddie accompanying them.

For example, your character can use his ability to hit the crap out of the ball. Use this to drive longer, boost your power in a time of a shot that's going over an obstacle like water or a sand trap, or just trying to get to the pin in less swings. One character can also guide a ball to the hole via Tesla Power, which obviously you can see how crucial that can be. Caddies all have their own perks to use as well as will relay information such as a cautionary wind direction. They'll allow you to use Shot Preview, see where your shot will end up, and Putt Preview, see how your putt on the green will end up. Those abilities haven't been new to the Golf genre but what makes them unique is they're not handed to you every time, these are abilities that will come in handy when you really need them since their quantity isn't unlimited.

Anyways, the overall gest of the matter is that this is a fun arcade golf title with some very appealing visuals and enjoyable social features, that at times feels like the Mario Kart to Forza analogy. When it comes to Powerstar Golf's abilities, boots, and use of stat improved gear the normal golf game gets a little bit of fun infused arcade sense. Stat improved gear isn't anything new for sports titles, the NHL games have done this well in the past, but the RPG infused design of the game will have you swinging away for many hours to come unlocking better gear, more courses and new characters & abilities (wait is it 3AM already?). Seriously, it's no different than dungeon running in a Diablo like RPG looking for legendary loot, well maybe just at a bit more relaxed pace and less the gates of hell have opened haha. I recommend this game, it's fun, gives something new while also keeping the strengths of previous titles of the genre.

Well I wanted to see how the new Youtube upload thing worked so I made a few clips from getting 1st place on Park City Tournament with a really good round large in part by my stat boosts and the gear I gained.

Noticed a new news update in the game meld and well I'll just put it here, FYI for any PAXEast goers.

Powerstar Golf is at PAX East!

4/10/2014

We'll keep this quick, we promise. We're unveiling a brand new course for Powerstar Golf at PAX East, Coyote Canyon, and showing off a few of its holes with The Next Level starting tomorrow.

Attending PAX? Swing by The Next Level booth and catch us while we're streaming gameplay from the new course. Not at PAX? Make sure you're watching The Next Level's stream to catch the action.
Xbox stream or The Next Level stream, I don't know. Gorgeous screens of Coyote Canyon seem to point towards a Desert Oasis with sandstone, cactus & emerald blue-green water setting.

Playing on Emperor's Garden, a tough course.

New Challenge:

Play a perfect strike on every shot during this hole.

Reward 500 XP

Oh man, how am I going to do that!?

Challenge Complete!

Man just like Pool Nation, Powerstar Golf makes you think you got game. I'm almost at Level 50 and just unlocked Kiara at the moment. Can't wait to play the new course.

I wish this game was a little more like Hot Shots Golf and less serious. Its a real bitch some times.

I finally came back to playing it after a few month hiatus thanks to an Achievement Hunter Let's Play. Then 20 minutes in, I remembered why I stopped playing, lol.

Haha yeah the Let's Play:

Eh, I don't know, the balance of realistic golf simulator in the background with the stylistic visuals and gameplay items is a good balance for me. You might like Mario Golf for the 3DS.

I just think its a bit too rough for me at times. I rage quit so often with it. I'm sure I'd love Mario Golf, but I only have Xbox consoles.

Finally unlocked Master Laoshi (special ability is Zen mode) and you're gonna need him in Burning Sands, and I thought I had a challenge with Emperor's Garden. I got a double bogey on one of the holes that has lava everywheres and it's like NEW RECORD! lol. Another hole I can barely reach the green with my Wood but the green is on a rock island that's just straight up out of the lava pit around it, what a pain that one was (on hard tees).

Cool, 7 new achievements coming with the new course, the course is in testing right now but will be free once it's available.

Every once and a while you get a really good recovery lol.

But yeah my short game's gettin' better.

http://youtu.be/LgLH04-nNiM

Cool. Had a few of those moments. You just now unlocked Laoshi? The way you talk about this game, I'd think you had everything at this point, lol. I unlocked him the other day using the chick (can't think of her name) with Tesla.

Wish they'd release the dlc soon. It'll get me back into it. Good to know there new achievements.

Speaking of achievements. If youre having issues, there's quite a bit of good guides on YouTube. I unlocked around 8 in one day cause of one person's guide.

Nah I unlocked Master Laoshi a few weeks ago but in both shots that's not the reason why I pared and eagled, it's more like you start to learn the game, where to put and where to place a chip with context of the wind.

Just unlocked Dominque last night, I'm going through all the career events from left to right, and no I don't have troubles, I just earn achievements the noble way (they're more fulfilling to me then). I'll only glance at a guide off TA when I've got two achievements for a full game I can't manage to get (like the Ally achievements in Mass Effect) or like in Pinball FX 2 where I've tried to beat wizard mode on a table for months with no avail.

I'm thinking I'll use the Tesla ability to nab the Hole in One achievement some time but I'm not gonna try and try to get it disrupting my lax mentality.

It seems like every console needs a good casual golf game these days. We've got Hot Shots (which I play on Vita still) and Mario Golf on 3DS and now Powerstar. Fine with me since I usually love them.

I just picked this up and will probably start it over the weekend. We can compare scores and stuff, right? I think there are some achievements for friend stuff? Any multiplayer?

Anyway, should be fun.

Awesome, yeah with Powerstar Golf the multiplayer is playing in Rivals Mode. This will pair off your friends or strangers and you're going head to head with their score kind of, just bonus for you if you beat them really. There's an achievement to use a buddy's caddy, a valuable resource since the later caddies have 3 better specials in their slots compared to what you start with.

There's 4 player local multiplayer too.

Cool, thanks for the info. Sounds like fun and I'm sure I will be stealing your caddy often, LOL.

The "noble way"? Nothing wrong with checking a guide to see the best spot for the water skip, or best spot for a hoe in one.

Look man, you're agreeing with me, if those are the only achievements I have left, otherwise my preference is to figure it out.

No, I agree with you, but you make it seem like anyone who uses a guide or some help, isn't "noble". Kinda felt like a slap in the face. Lord knows we all need help from time to time. Like Dark Souls.

But all is good.

Just opened up an Extreme Pack and got Henry's Illuionarium Obsidian Woods, Reiko's Mass Driver Woods, Laoshi's Dragon Tail Woods & Frank's Rangemaster Irons. SCORE!

Powerstar Golf has gone to something akin to KI with a free preview mode along with the still existent full game. Good way to have people check it out, stats and gear carry over to the full game too, which is pretty cool.

Been wanting to grab this but I haven't been 100% sure Id enjoy it. I went ahead with the City Park pack. We'll see how this goes.

EDIT: So I have an issue already. If I upgrade from the 1 course to full game it runs me more than if I just bought the full game by 2 bucks. Not cool with that.

Don't know if it's the knowledge I've learned since, the way my stats are improved by my gear and level or just that Coyote Canyon has a few shortcuts because I shot a 5 under par my first go with its 18 holes. Highlight Reel below:

http://youtu.be/QUO4er6KKVU

It's a fun course, reminds me of Tiger Wood's Wolf Creek desert course.

Hahaha, just got 3 achievements with one shot, literally (Positive Approach, Ace, Rules of Attraction). Got that hole in one!

Nicely done, Spy! I meant to come back and report my initial plays with this. Awesome the new course is out and beyond cool it is free. Interesting about the new F2P structure. Why not, although the pricing sounds a bit off?

I'm having a lot of fun with it thus far. I can't wait your caddy, though, Spy? Is it a mistake or do you not have a it public? I'm lucky another friend happened to have a level 71 one as well! I'm still working my way through the first course since I take my time.

Putting can be frustrating, although every golf game's putting is. I also have a bit of trouble judging where to place a shot for distance when the green is much higher or lower than me. I can do okay with it but I would rather be more precise.

Where's the save match progress feature? Isn't this 2014? I don't always want to do 18 holes in one sitting.

Anyway, a great game to have digitally that can be enjoyed any time. I look forward to seeing every course and the new one.

Ohhhhh haha I did not, OK I shared my Caddy now. Thanks, also got the achievement for you playing my Rival info.

Yeah the putting meter is a suggestion and not an abdolute. Only a Sith deals in absolutes. Lol but yeah you'll grasp the system with practice.

Just dueled a friend, who I met on Twitch who was also watching the developers play the game, and lost. Lol my God the moves they did and it would relate to how they're level 194.

Also got Double Eagle, one of the shortcuts on Coyote Canyon helped but I sank a 20 footer!

Nicely done. I will have to try out your caddy. Double eagle? So you're getting to the green in one shot on a par 5? Crazy. That's one of those that I never expect to earn.

Yeah they have a sloped mountain on one so if you land it on top it will roll down onto the green.

I saw an amazing shot, a random rival player shot it through the little revine but had Reiko's Tesla ability active and got a hole in one. Never thought that shot was possible either haha.

Sheesh, here I'm still struggling to do a full 18 under par...

Mind if I add you guys as a follower so I can use your shots for record xp?

In the infamous Kahn! tone

So freaking satisfying! The Back 9 or, Magma Challenge, is the only event on Burning Sands I can not even get Amateur medal. Gah

Man, I'm dreading some of those later courses. Nice job, though. I wish there was a save game option in the middle of a round!

Absolutely, Nasum, added you back.
