I really liked Persona 4 on PS2. Is this similar? I noticed that Persona seems to be a "sub-brand" within Shin Megami Tensei.

Not really, but it is pretty awesome. I'd check out some game play video. The story is pretty sparse compared to P4, there are no social links and the emphasis is on fusing. It is sort of like Pokemon in a post-apocalyptic world with demons replacing Pokemon. Was my GOTY.

In my opinion it's similar. You take Persona, ditch the social sim high schooler aspects, and make the battle system more hardcore/awesome, and you have SMT. Story's probably not nearly as good either though.
