I know you can use a PS3 controller for the PC if you jump through some hoops, and I know PS4 controllers work somewhat on the PC. I'm wondering how well they work though, as I've heard that some games don't support them and there is no drivers available for them.

Assuming I want to use either a PS3 or PS4 controller, can anyone give me advice as to which one would be easier to setup and which one would work better?

PS3 controller works just fine with MotioninJoy. It winds up functioning exactly as a 360 controller, so it just winds up coming down to whether the game supports a 360 controller or not (most games now do).

I've not tried a PS4 controller, so I cant speak on that.

It does not matter if game supports a controller or not - You can get any PC game to run via gamepad if you want to. On Linux I use Antimicro with all kinds of pads including PS3 and 360's. On Windows, you can use Joy2key.

Thanks for the input guys. I have a PS3 controller now, so I'll probably use that until it wears out and then switch to a PS4 one. So if I grab MotioninJoy, then Joy2key, I can use it on any game correct?

Yup, that is correct.

Additionally, a nice thing to throw into the mix is a bluetooth adapter. MotionInJoy supports those, so you can play wirelessly. USB works fine without, but bluetooth adapters can be found for cheap anyway, so it's worth shelling out the buck or two for a cheap one. Keep in mind that the range is only a few feet on cheap adapters, though. I bought the cheapest one I could find, and 10 feet or so seems to start making it hiccup.

Ok, so I set this up and the ps3 controller works except that the pc doesn't recoginize the joysticks. All of the other buttons work fine though. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

This is the best software for PS3 and PS4 controllers mentioned above

It makes the PC recognize the Ps4 controller and then I can use and map every  button, including the giant touch pad.  Just depends on what I want to map it in the game.  I use the PS4 controller in games like Transformers, Devil May Cry, Titanfall, Watch Dogs, Metal Gear Solid, and a few others.  All the games thing it's an Xbox 360 PC controller and on screen it says like hit X, B, A, Y etc...but you'll get use to figuring out the mapping and everything just works.  No issues.

I use the USB cord that game with the PS4 and also Bluetooth if Im playing from my chair like 30 ft away.  I use triple monitors on some games so I can't sit close.  Both work really well.
