Microsoft’s Shannon Loftis announced that Phantom Dust will be returning in 2017 to Xbox One and Windows 10! In an interview with Geoff Keighley she said, “This is actually the original brought into the modern era. We are using the original assets from the Phantom Dust that was release by Microsoft Japan in 2003. We are updating some key parts of it, we are updating it with modern Xbox Live.” She went on to say that some draft “ready” decks (arsenals) will be available from the start so that you can engage in multiplayer right away.

New Features for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC:
• Xbox Live Arena support integrated
• Play on Windows 10 PC or Xbox One seamlessly with cross-saves, retaining all of your progress and in-game items between both platforms.
• Cross-device play lets you play against friends regardless of platform.
• Full Xbox Live feature set of the original game, including downloading top player’s arsenals to practice against them – a feature not available since the original’s release!
• Looking for Group on Xbox Live so you can find and connect with other gamers more easily than ever.
• Multiplayer starter arsenals are included. Jump right into multiplayer with a better selection of skills!
• The Multiplayer skill shop is no longer tied to solo player progression. All skills are available for purchase immediately for multiplayer use.
• Improvements to game balance and frame rate

Adam Isgreen posted:

We’re working on some improvements beyond what’s been called out, but because we’re very sensitive to maintaining the balance and feel of the game, we’ll see how they turn out before we promise them. Worst case, you get perfect PD at solid frame rate. Best case… it’s going to be better than that.[/quote]

KOTAKU REPORTS PHANTOM DUST STUDIO 'DARKSIDE GAMES' CLOSES

Well, according to Microsoft the game is still coming.  Well, I doubt we will see it this year as hoped, though.  I can wait.  Hopefully it somehow becomes a better game regardless of the unfortunate events rather than falling into development hell.  Monthly game nights organized by myself are on a hiatus unless someone takes over.  I'm sure when I move to a new residence and there is more PD news I will start them up again.

From PhantomDusted.com:

Back in September Adam Isgreen tweeted, “New Palace looks amazing.”, referring to the Palace stage of Phantom Dust. Ever since, Phantom Dust fans have been hoping for a screenshot, to see for themselves what the game would look like. Until now, all that had been shown was a CG teaser trailer announcing the game at E3 2014. Earlier this week we learned that Darkside Game Studios will unfortunately no longer be involved with the game, but Microsoft says the game remains in development.

Maybe these images that surfaced will brighten Espers’ hopes for Phantom Dust’s future.

Want to join in?  Check out the revival campaign and monthly game nights!  Xlink Kai really comes alive with plenty of Phantom Dust.  We even played with a developer working on the reboot (who has since left the studio :()!

September 6, 2014

The year was 2013.  It was June.  I watched E3 press conferences from the big 3.  I laughed at Microsoft, praised Sony.

6 months passed.  Rumors started going around about a new Phantom Dust.  I joined in the revival campaign and we have been playing Phantom Dust for the original xbox/360 on XLink Kai.

Now Microsft at E3 2014 announced a new Phantom Dust!  It seems to be a remake/reboot right now, but details will surface over time.

I guess I'm buying an Xbox One!

It was crazy watching almost every copy on ebay/amazon of the original game sell in the hours after the game was announced.

I'm guessing its so people can flip them, but it seems really strange to flip the original version of the game in anticipation of a remake.  That'd be like buying up all the existing Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire's in anticipation of the 3ds one.

Hahaha that's great.  I still own 2 copies and have myself play on my xbox and friends play on 360 on kai.  It was released for $20, so after I played and loved it I bought tons of copies up and sent them to friends.

I was the only preorder of the game at my local gamestop.  The employee said, "What is this?"

Such a gem!

Against all logic and odds (since on paper it's not something I'd be into), really liked the first one and still have my copy. Looking forward to this one.

Halo Wars was hilarious.  ALL UNITS!

Anyways, there has been a resurgence in the community for this game.  Every night there is a handful of people playing on XLink Kai.  Check out the revival campaign if you still have your original copy, it even works on 360 without any mods!

I was so busy playing Halo 2 back then I never checked out the original Phantom Dust.

What's it about? I'll probably have to play it when it releases.

It's a third person action game, where your attacks are basically cards.  You have an arsenal, which is basically your deck.  They continually appear at your spawn throughout the game in random fasion like drawing cards.

The story premise is basically mysterious dust on the surface of Earth erases people's memories after 15 minutes.  However, it gives them abilities.  So matches are limited to 15 minutes before having to return underground.  The story revolves around figuring out what happened and retrieving memories.

The amount of strategies is almost infinite.

Cool, I'm guessing with the popularity of hearthstone this will probably do fairly well and I see why now Microsoft unburried this.

That is incredible!  I had it preordered because I was dying for an online action game that wasn't a shooter.  What I got was so much more.  The store only received one copy, my preorder.  That game could have done so well.

I watched some gameplay today, I'm extremely interested in this game now.

This was definitely the most underrated game on the original Xbox for me! (similar to Shadowrun on 360 in the "underrated" department)

I'll try to make that get together on the 6th!

Excellent!  Even if you don't play, the chat rooms are buzzing.  One of the developers of the game jumps on and gets feedback too!  It's really awesome to see how involved they are and how much they want the game to win the approval of the PD vets.

Topic has been dead due to a lack of news.

Then news hit.

:( Darkside games has closed and PD may be in limbo.  See OP for details.

That really just sheds more light on what we already know: Darkside Games, the original dev, is dead. Phil Spencer has repeatedly said the game is still in the works... Though I assume it's being shopped to different devs and is in a state of limbo right now. I have a feeling this game will come out much later in the console cycle than first planned if at all.

It's a really cool direction they were going in. Trying to make it an ESport. To be honest, they should just scrap the single player if they aren't going to go all out on it. It was terrible in the original PD. The story was great but the missions/structure and filler in between missions was heinous.

So the original idea of a new game IS actually dead. Kind of sucks it's just a "remaster" (which could mean a lot of things) but it's better than nothing.

Updated the post with relevant info!

I'm so hyped for this.  If they go the microtransaction route I hope it's as fair as KI.  If there is a 'full' version I'll buy it.

Been almost a year since I updated the post.  PD is supposedly coming before E3!  Also, buy it once on Windows or Xbox and you get it for both.

Exciting stuff!

New video. fucking awesome that this is gonna be free. Was actually going to buy it so now I can spend some of that money on the titles from the BC sale.

Here is my review that I put on the game on Xbox.com, if you like it, share your thoughts! The game is awesome and the microtransactions are not grimey! It needs your support though!

On 4K and better than ever! A classic lives again!

Phantom Dust is one of my all time favorite games. For years I hoped for a sequel. Then, the age of remasters came. When a new Phantom Dust was announced at E3 2014, I ran out and bought an Xbox One. That reboot ended up falling through, but that paved the way for this release!

This is a HUGE improvement over the original. The game holds up incredibly well when brought to 4K. The load times are virtually non-existent now. Failing a mission three times allows you to skip it entirely... No more building an arsenal just to use 1 pointless skill to finish one mission.

Play through the single player at least once, and avoid spoilers! The story is actually quite special. Some of the missions are a slog, but they are skippable now! After that, head online and collect the online skills! They are incredibly unique. Watch out for Will-O-Wisp!

Purchase the $6.99 skill pack to support the developers. None of the microtransactions are necessary. Thank you Microsoft and co!
The game looks great in 4K on my tv and 1440p on my laptop. The Xbone version is strangely lower quality with adjustments needed for brightness/contrast, but still very nice.
