They have similar themes but they take place in separate lands. Story wise you'll catch a few nods to the original if you've played it. You could start here with no problems. That said, if you haven't played Dark Souls 1, you really should play it first if you are even remotely interested in this. I think it was the better game. This was great too, but I would play dark and demons souls first especially given how cheap you can snag a copy of them for.
If you do buy this, you'll either hate it, or really want to play the others anyway.

Maybe a "complete"edition. I'd be disappointed if anyone actually considered this a real contender of GOTY. Demon's and Dark Souls were GOTY, not this one.

true. i would wait for the goty edition. Im still sorta salty because the developer said they were not going to do DLC and they ended up lying.

Considering the type of garbage that has recieved "GOTY" editions before, I think DS2 is more than deserving. Still a hell of a game even if it's a bit weaker than the previous games.
