Games for Windows Live client...what does it all mean?

CAGiversary!
Just wondering if anyone knows more about what's going on with Games for Windows Live.

I thought that as of July 1st that you'd be able to run GFWL games that were already installed, but NOT install GFWL games.

I know a decent chunk of GFWL games have stripped out the GFWL part, often replacing it with Steam.

BUT there are lots that haven't, and...the GFWL client is still available, and I can still log into it just fine.

It's almost looking like Microsoft is still letting you use GFWL at a basic level, but patches no longer work?

This list appears not to have been updated in a while, but at least gives a snapshot on games that have been patched, and ones that hadn't as of 7 months ago:

The first two Batman games and Bioshock 2 have all been fixed, which is good as they're great games.

Fallout 3 sounds like there's a non GFWL Steam version?  But the retail one maybe doesn't work?  I'm not clear.

Resident Evil 5 is on the doesn't work list, but I've seen some people say it's still working fine and some other people claiming it is getting fixed.

Dark Souls 1 and Red Faction Guerrilla aren't (or weren't) fixed but were going to be, supposedly.

Dead Rising 2 isn't being fixed, nor is Universe at War, nor Dark Void, nor probably Star Wars: Republic Heroes...

If Microsoft actually IS leaving the service up, then I wonder for how long...like maybe they'll just keep supporting it as long as the client works, but if it eventually breaks in future windows they'll say too bad?

Just not clear...

If the service goes down, I think it'll be at the point that Xbox Live is shut down for the 360.

Because they run on the same servers, so there's no real reason to kill GFWL itself.
