Back up games/saves that I have on external HDD?

Okay, so imagine I run all my games from an external HDD.  Is there some way to backup my save data in case the hard drive dies or crashes?  

This would be so much easier if I could just keep all my save data on my Wii U and all the game data on the external HDD, but it seems for digital download games, everything is lumped together.
