Great show guys!

Totally agree with y'all that Nintendo does not know what it is doing. They seem like a rudderless ship just throwing stuff out there to see what sticks.

The new incarnations of the 3DS puzzles me. I can understand if they wanted to build the amiibo functionality into all future 3DS models but why add that crazy wannabe second analog stick to it along with extra buttons this late in its life cycle. Personally, I think this could have waited for their next handheld device.

Keep up the good work!

Wombat you crying midget, let me compare knees smashed on a plane.  Go crawl inside your toilet bowl and try to sit in it.  That is what being in coach with an asshole reclined in front you is like.  You are so short you have no reason to recline, just stop being a dick and no one will theaten you.

Re: gamer gate I believe the bare bones of it is:

Step 1: woman allegedly sleeps with VG reporters to get favorable coverage and with other VG developers (while in a relationship, so on top of it all, she was cheating)
Step 2: Woman fakes hacking of her computer by people supposedly trying to shut her down because she is a woman game developer in order to drum up sympathy support for her failing steam greenlight campaign.
Step 3: Call on people from step 1 to shut down any discussion of step 2 on news sites and popular forums.

Wombat the new 3DS also has a more powerful CPU in it. That's the catch.

In Japan Monster Hunter is going to make 2 skus of the next game. One for the old 3DS and one for the new 3DS with better graphics

That's pretty messed up if true.

I thought Forbes has a pretty fair breakdown of gamergate.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2014/09/04/gamergate-a-closer-look-at-the-controversy-sweeping-video-games/

#GamerGate isn’t about conspiracies. It isn’t about scandal and corruption. It isn’t about feminists or misogynists. It isn’t about any of these things, and it’s about all of them all at once.

In the end, it’s about gamers upset with the status quo and demanding something better. It’s about a group of consumers and enthusiasts not simply feeling that their identity is threatened, but believing that they’re being poorly represented by an industry and press that grow more and more cliquish and remote every year. And it’s about the ad hoc, messy series of uncoordinated events that got us here.

Perhaps none of this is the answer. Perhaps the only answer is to encourage honest debate between people who truly care about video games. A conversation is a powerful thing."

Re: Airplane seats.. I just yell "Coming back" before reclining.

also... "She's not with Don" might be the douchiest thing Wombat has ever said.

Btw I was searching online to find pants for short guys yesterday and gave up in frustration, so the short vs tall argument was pretty funny. Better promotions definitely more than offsets the infrequent and momentary discomfort of air travel. Hell, use the money increase for first class.

I thought of GamersGate too when that bullshit hashtag first came out. I like that site; bought a few games from them. Hope their business isn't affected by this crap. I just want it all to stop, so tired of seeing it. Of course then there's people in the conflict who think if you try to remain neutral you're part of the problem.

Haven't listened yet, but since I see you guys are talking about "gamergate" (ugg), thought I'd post about the "new" 3DS before thread blows up.

What if the New 3DS is the first stepping stone to the new WiiU? With all the new functions, the New 3DS sounds like it could sub in for the WiiU gamepad now. Imagine the WiiU could sell $100 or $150 cheaper with just a pro controller, no touchscreen gamepad, instead it links with the New 3DS. It now has all the buttons of a gamepad, touchscreen, and with new horsepower can double as the 2nd-sceen take your WiiU game off the TV and into the New 3DS. And it will still double for a portable system for all those 3DS games. Unlike the gamepad which you can't take very far from main room.

Lastly, I do think it sucks for all the 45 million who bought a 3DS (or XL) that the newest of the new games will only work on a New 3DS.

EDIT: Looks like I forgot about the Amiibo crap, that replaces the WiiU gamepad too. I really do think this will be the new WiiU controller in the future. Either sold separately so the WiiU price looks low (still playable with cheaper pro controller) or bundled together with a New 3DS LL as a 2-in-1 console system.

The new 3DS discussion was painful to listen to.  Wombat kept asking what the new version was designed for with its second analog stick/nubbin and two new shoulder buttons.  But even the guy who actually lives in Japan had no clue.

I haven't replied to a CAGcast in a while but I felt the need to do so on this particular show because the "real life gamer conversation" had me cracking up on my way to work. It was a great way to start my Friday. Anytime Shipwreck actually laughs out loud is usually something special.

As for the New 3DS, I can't understand why it's not coming out in America in time for Super Smash Brothers. While I don't want to have to buy a new system for that game, the fact that the system features more buttons, a second analog, a faster CPU, and the ability to accept Amiibo figures seems to all line up with one game:  Smash Brothers. It seems strange not to launch your new system with that.

Cheapy, I think the indie outrage is coming from people who perceive the indie scene as a sort of "untouched" sector of gaming business. It doesn't have the "dirty EA and/or Activision touch" and is a way for people who don't have that huge bank account to bring us new games with innovative and unique premises instead of the cod-factory style that big gaming has become.

So when the supposed last line of defense in the big-business style of gaming is tainted by dirty tactics and untrustworthy critics I think it reminds us how scummy the whole gaming business can be. We just want to play games, dammit!

Yes, of course I'm aware the nub is used for Monster Hunter. The discussion was about if it made sense to redesign the 3ds and add a stick for one or two games that will support it?

My new favorite Shipwreck quote came from this episode when he says "It'll get better or worse" referring to Gamergate.

This quote can be used in so many situations.

Shipwreck, do I have to pay you a fee for using it in everyday conversation from now on?? :)

Wow such negativity about the new 3DS. It'll be another two years before the next gen comes out anyway. And people replace their smartphones more frequently.

I do agree that Nintendo really needs to get its sh- together, if even they're having trouble with the 3DS. I know summer is a dry spell, but for the fall and holiday seasons, I can't think of any other exciting third party games.

They've promised a new Monster Hunter, a Xenoblade port. Who knows what Nintendo might do with the new system, despite the fact that the regular 3DS should be close to the Gamecube in terms of power, if not a few levels below. I borked a repair job on one of my 3DSes, and am sort of glad that I can buy this new system instead of buying a cheap one on Black Friday and then knowing that an upgrade is on the horizon.

I thought Gamergate was regarding the trolling of that woman on Youtube who pointed out that all of these big budget games aren't very nice to women, despite females making up a good portion of the gaming population. But if it's about sleeping around, that's very unprofessional. A new low compared to the constant swag that companies keep sending to the "game press" to promote their new games.

Wombat sure wasn't aware of it, so it might have been worth you mentioning Monster Hunter 4G somewhere in here.

Wombat: This is two extra shoulder buttons and the second analog stick

Cheapy: But what games are gonna use that? No one, I mean....

Wombat: That's what I'm saying, what's the point of this? It is, it is a big change.

Cheapy: Nintendo thinks it's going to sell another fourty millions 3DSes I think

Wombat: But why? For what? What is the application of these two extra [buttons] and the second analog stick?

Shipwreck: So you can play games like any other console.

Wombat: But what games?

I think it does make sense for Nintendo to slap in some extra components (that are very cheap) that will make the newest installment of an extremely popular game play better. The last Monster Hunter sold 4.1 million copies.

No excuses for EA putting out a half ass next gen NHL when they had 2 years to work on it. Rammer needs to be fired

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeWNowkqI3A

NO EASHL = NO BUY. buy this used or rent it and i agree with wombat, put your NHL money towards destiny instead.

I like how wombat said that cheapy was being racist. The real racist is wombat. Bringing out outdated japanese references. Mr Miyagi? Get this guy off the show. Can do some racist jew statements?

So after continually ignoring the existence of Dead Rising 3, aka the "fixed" Dead Rising on the XBone, Cheapy highly recommends the PC version, if you have a beefy enough PC to run it, then in the same shows says not to bother paying 9.99 for the Xbone version because it's 720p (although plays exactly the same).

WTH, dude? DR3 was probably the best launch exclusive on the Xbone. Yes, better than Ryse (which I also enjoyed). I clocked almost as much time in DR3 as I did in Assassin's Creed Black Flag. Loved em both.

In short, if you can still get it for 9.99 for the Xbone, it's a steal. Great game with loads of replayability (and I rarely replay a game after finishing the main storyline; Elder Scrolls games being a rare exception).

Wombat's gonna wombat. Honestly, I was more surprised at Shipwreck's reaction to Cheapy explaining how some common parts of English don't exist in Japanese.

http://edition.tefl.net/articles/home-abroad/japanese-english-pronunciation-changes/

Japanese is a syllabic language, meaning all consonants apart from a final n must be followed by a vowel. This is most noticeable when an English word finishes with a consonant that is not n, for example booto (boat) and hoomu (home/ short for platform).

Another issue which is common to all nationalities and is a significant one here is sounds and sound distinctions which don’t exist in L1 but do in the English words that the Japanese word comes from. One common example is th, which is usually transformed into s (e.g. saado- third) or z (e.g. mazaa – mother). This can cause problems even for a Japanese learner who can pronounce thatch and this as a British person or American might, as they may remain unaware that the Japanese word shieta (theatre) is supposed to have that th sound when not speaking Japanese.

With the tall people versus recliners discussion you already lost the argument. The people everyone should be mad at is the airlines.

I was very pleased w/ this week. You guys actually made me laugh for once w/ the Destiny real commerical

And Wombat!  W/ the Asian Immosibiru language talking.  Hilarious !  Classic Not-Wombat  Very impressed this week w him not being a bucket of white paint.

I actually do have a question for yall this week - How hype are you for Season 2 of KI and if your not how come do you suck at it?

Hey CheapyD,

Now that your son is back in school, I think you should start translating Japanese porn into English. This seems like it would be the perfect "hobby" for you, and I'm sure someone would pay for it as there is so much to translate. Plus the added bonus that would probably be hilarious.

It seems to me more about enticing people to double dip. They've sold 44.14 million 3DS consoles, but they want to sell over 100 million. If they can get everyone who has already bought one (or two) to buy another one (or two) then they're well on their way to overtake the 154 million DS consoles they sold.

I mean, there are people who will spend a lot more to get a new iPhone/iPad every year, so I guess that probably played into their thinking. I mean, I won't buy one at launch. Maybe if they had a Princess Peach or Princess Zelda New 3DS XL or something, but not a plain black or white one.

Am I the only one who enjoyed the live action Destiny trailer?  For some reason, I thought the dialogue was really funny.

I didn't think it was bad. I watched it after listening to them talk about it, and I disagree with them. They said it was trying to mimic "gamerspeak" (can't find the part in the cast so I can't confirm if they actually thought this, just going by memory) but I don't think it was at all. I think it was just those characters speaking, not the players. It was pretty lame dialogue, but that didn't bother me. And add the fact that they were playing Zeppelin and you have a pretty kickass trailer. And this is coming from someone who has zero hype about Destiny because I don't have a current-gen console and I feel buying a game for the previous gen is a waste at this point so I won't be getting the game.

The CAGcast doesn't usually make me guffaw like an idiot, but that headset bit left me in tears.  If this episode were right after my oral surgery a few weeks back, those stitches would be good as spent.

I have never really posted much on these forums before, but I could not let this week's show go without providing feedback. The "discussion" about Japanese pronunciation was definitely the most unnecessarily offensive segment I've ever heard on CAGCast. I was repulsed by Wombat's cheap and lame attempt at humor on a seriously old trope. Even Cheapy sounded annoyed by it. I was also surprised at Shipwreck, who plays many Japanese games, had such a difficult time grasping the fact that Japanese is a syllabic language and that words taken from English are pronounced with (surprise!) a Japanese pronunciation.

I get that a lot of it is just Wombat being Wombat, and this isn't even close to being a Japan-centric podcast. But it really disappointed me that such long time gaming veterans could act so blatantly ignorant in public about a culture that has a significant role in the gaming industry, to many of your listeners, and to at least one third of the CAGCast team. It just doesn't fit with what I consider the rather knowledgeable and humorous discussion on the podcast about pretty much anything else related to the industry.

I really enjoy listening to the CAGCast and would like to continue to do so. So I respectfully request that you retire this old joke of those "wacky Japanese pronunciations". It's not funny, it's not necessary, and it's not worth your listeners' time.

I don't know how you do it, Cheapy, but you always manage to address hot-button issues in the best way possible.

If I may chime in on the first world problems discussion, I would like to remind Mr. Wombat that tall people have more knee trouble as they grow older, so check your privilege, shorty.

I totally agree with you. Can we have a segment making derogatory remarks about jews? I didn't think so. fuck wombat and fuck shipwreck. I am done with this podcast.

What is derogatory about asking why Xbox is pronounced that way in Japanese? It's like saying the way Americans pronounce Karaoke is derogatory. We may not be the podcast for you if this offends you. Also, I'm not Jewish, so sure.

About a 1:35 in, funny stuff about how silly Hebrew and Yiddish are/ sound.

There is a real serious issue with what is going on with gamer gate, and it's not with the women that are developers or journalists in the industry. These women are working at these places because they like games and want to be part of this industry. Of course they may have friendships and relationships with others in the industry just like many of their male counterparts do because they share an interest in games. It doesn't automatically mean there are ethics issues with this. Even if there, are it doesn't justify the harassment these women are receiving on twitter and other services. They are getting sent hundreds of messages of hate, graphic porn, death threats and rape threats which include their home address. They are not faking this. People are bullying anyone that points out the misogyny behind these attacks. It's ugly and horrible that these people are behaving this way. You can disagree with people and are free to discuss that civilly in open forums or blog posts, but bullying women with threats from dozens or more people with threatening or graphic messages is wrong.

Nothing derogatory about asking why Xbox is pronounced that way in Japanese. However, disagreeing with the one person who actually knows the pronunciation who is attempting explain it to you just sounds really silly. You asked for the Japanese pronunciation of Xbox and Microsoft, implying you had an inkling it would sound different. But when Cheapy told you your reaction was essentially "OMG that doesn't sound like the English pronunciation!". And to top it off, Wombat ends by remarking how many people would be offended by Cheapy's explanation (going by Cheapy's reaction). Again, it just all sounds out of place when every other topic is discussed at a pretty informed and intelligent level.

The fact that none of you know whether or not the Ouya can run Netflix clearly shows you guys are clueless about the device. It's simple to sideload almost any android app, including Netflix and many others.

You might not have an interest in it, but this is not a useless device with very little support and poor functionality. It receives new games every day, some of which are excellent indie titles.

If you do your research, you might be surprised. What I also find interesting is that shipwreck will spend a nice chunk of change for an intellivision but the Ouya is a waste of money. Hmmmmm

Here's what I think. The New 3DS has just a few small features, new  buttons, and the 2nd right control stick. This device can also now play old gamecube games. This will also replace the current Wii U's gamepad. The "New" 3DS has all the right buttons and touch screen stuff & amiibo detection to sell as a stand a lone device. Next Christmas (2015) a revamped "NEW" Wii U will be sold as a bundle with "New" 3DS as it's controller. They will make a second "New" Wii U bundle without the New 3DS for all of the early adopters of the New 3DS .

My 2 cents

There are comedic aspects to the show. They were just playing it up for laughs.

Having just come back from a 15-day vacation in Japan, the Japanese pronunciation bit was PURE GOLD. I can't recall the last time the 3 of y'all had talked about Japanese language other than the recurring gag about how to pronounce 'karaoke'. I really think adding a 'Japanese pronounciation lesson' bit to the show outline (like Watch this bitches, etc) would be fun. I don't think the bit was offensive at all as it was clearly Wombat and Shipwreck busting Cheapy's balls the way any group of friends would do while drinking cold ones at a bar i.e. they were just having fun. Great podcast guys.

This is a very interesting idea. I hadn't thought of the possibility of the new 3ds replacing the Wii U pad.

Do you think Nintendo would have to increase the price of the current Wii U bundle to accommodate replacing the pad with the new 3ds? I'm just assuming the new 3ds costs more to manufacture than the Wii u pad. Increasing the price is the only drawback I see as I think Nintendo really needs to get the price down on the Wii U in order to make it more appealing as an impulse buy.

This actually excited me just a bit. Excellent points.

I think this question is long overdue, but always forget to ask it.

...with the new site improvements (been new for months! lol!), I have noticed that there are things that have been removed/taken out either because they're still in the works and/or was removed intentionally(?) and by 'that' I'm referring to the site's 'Member trade/buy/sell game' price tracker, for the lack of a correct term, section where users of the site could actually set their collections for sale by giving it a condition 'status' with a square that a specific 'color' depending if it was in 'acceptble/excellent/new/etc' condition & a price/best offer option price.

My question, obviously, is...Are we ever getting that feature of the site again and, if so, is there any timeframe as to when we'll get it back? If it's not coming back, is there any 'specific' (ex. users being prone to FRAUDELENT users) reason why it isn't coming back?

If this was actually answered before then I'm sorry for asking it again, must have missed the response. Doesn't need to be answered in the podcast, unless you guys have barely any 'cagbag' questions for the episode...then go ahead and use it, maybe you can inform a lot of people about the situation that have been wondering the same thing, but have yet to ask. O:)

Great show guys, you guys are pretty much my #1 Podcast! Keep it up!
^Btw, I think this question was never answered in the CagBag thread, so here it is again for this week! :D

Keep it up guys! Great show as always!
