I was watching G4 today and noticed a commercial for the U.S. army that gives a phone # to call and then you can get a free U.S. Army T-shirt and video. Has anyone ever tried this or know if it works? My only worry is that it would put you on some sort of list of theirs for people that may join the army because I certainly do not want to join.

i guess they had the same thing at my school, they were handing out free t-shirts, mouse pads, pens, etc. i thought it was a descent deal since all u had to do was sign up to recieve info (or do X ammount of pull ups) and u got stuff for free. now i basically recieve probally 2 letters a week from them, they even sent a dvd which is probally about joining the army but i never saw that. i dont really care about that, what irritates me is when they call to ask stuff every now and then. but i dont regret doing it, the letters i can always ignore and the calls u just have to tell them not interested and if u can put up with that much, go for it.

Well, the deal is to get a recruiter to try and get you to committ 24/7. Recruiters are evaluated on number and type of enlistments they can secure. The fact that they have an 800 number can get some of the guesswork out of their job, as most people call because they are interested in what the ARMY can do for them. All I'm saying is that if you call to get that stuff, be prepared for ARMY solicitation up to a couple times a month.

Thats exactly what would happen. They would require your home phone number. I signed up for free army socks a few years ago. Never got my socks but got 2-3 phone calls a week from a recruter. They are sneaky too.
Him: "Hi, this is John. What's up buddy?"
Me: "Um... Do I know you?"
Him: "Suuure. So what are you in to?"
Me: "huh? What are you talking about"
Him: "So do you like mountain biking?"
Me: "WTF?"
Him " I do, we should go some time."
Me: "Who the heck ARE you?"
Him: "Saaaay, You ever think of joining the army? You could do lots of mountain biking at your new post! Think about it!"
Me: "What!! I never said I liked mountain biking. Are you with the Army or something?
Him: "Sure am and let me tell you about it. blah blah blah blah blah blah......."

(Actual conversation I had with an army recruiter a few years ago.)

Now, the military isn't a bad way to go. (I joined the Air Force ) But recruiters have huge quotas they are required to fill each month. Some are more determined than others. I actually had a navy recruiter evesdrop on a conversation I had with the air force recruiter. He heard my home phone number and called me later that day.

So go get your free shirt, but be ready to get lots of junk mail and phone calls. :)

Ever few months we have someone at our school, trying to get us to join. I stay away from them, though once we had some of them in out PE class. It was my freshman year, and at the end they gave us cards to fill out, with our name/address/etc. I filled out everything correctly, and checked a box that said I did not want to get anything from them, and that I was not intrested in joining.
Shortly after that I started to recieve stuff in the mail from the army every month or so, and it has not stopped. Im now in my Junior year.

When I was 17-20 I received a phone calls from recruiters about once a month. The fist 5 calls or so I would get pissed that they were bothering me, after that I would talk to them for 20 min or so and Shaq-fu with them. They would ask what I like to do in my free time and I would say I like to smoke crack and shit like that. Another time I spoke to a recruiter on the phone for about 40 min before I told him I did not want to join. He asked me why I was wasting his time. Fun times.

Reasons in the above posts are exactly why I never sign up for any of the Army stuff. I don't feel like telling a recruiter on the phone every few weeks that I don't want to join the Army. I never signed up for anything Army related but in high school, a few times a year I would get stuff in the mail from them.

Good way to get the army off your back if you're a guy- Ask them if your boyfriend can visit you on the base.

Before I joined the ARMY, the recruiters would harass the crap out of me a couple times a week. The funny thing is, I joined in my junior year of college through ROTC. I then contacted the recruiters and told them. One of em was a prick and and asked me why I didn't go through him. I told him that because for years he had hounded me nonstop, and that I wanted to piss him off by telling him that he couldn't take credit for me joining. Turns out that he became one of my instructors later that year and busted my balls every chance he got. Bottom line - - if you ever piss off a recruiter or intentionally give him/her the runaround, then don't ever join afterwards cause it might come back to get you. Not that anyone here would ever be stupid enough to do that anyway (the joining part, that is)

Another good way is to use an heavy accent to talk to them, or tell them how you lost blank body part in blank war. What would I know though, the army never called for me they just sent me muchos mail. I did, however, sign a "friend" up for the army once. He was a hippie and big time into weed, so I thought it might help him out. He sure didn't appreciate all the calls he got from them.
