Getting DVD video into Windows Movie Maker?

This seems surprisingly hard to find reliable information on.  I'm using Windows Movie Maker 2.6, because it's free and I only need to do some very simple edits.  I've used SUPER to convert the VOB files copied from the disc into WMVs.  However, after editing in Movie Maker, the video file refuses to save.

I've searched around and it seems the problem is in the conversion method.  I don't get why you'd be able to edit but not save in that case, but whatever.  I'm assuming there is some specific codec or setting I need to be using in the conversion step in order to make the files play nice with WMM.  Does anybody know what those might be?  Or a better converter program I should be using?  I wish there was something like Handbrake that just had a WMM setting.
