Some of the mechanics in the videos for the game scream "Super Mario Sunshine" to me.
Haha, it was almost a Mario game.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto made this reveal in an interview with Edge Magazine (via NintendoLife), where he noted "There were heated debates over who the main player character should be. Whether it should be Mario, or a squid.

"When we talked about the possibility of it being Mario, of course we could think of the advantages: anybody would be willing to touch it as soon as we announced that we had the new Mario game. But at the same time, we had some worries. If it were Mario, we wouldn't be able to create any new IP."

This just in! One of our senior research assistants just faxed over a fascinating new image. At first glance, this looks like a typical back alley, but word on the street is that it’s a favorite battleground for these crazy squids. Apparently it’s a popular place to hone one’s skills in one-on-one duels. If fact, it looks familiar for some reason…

'' Breaking news! One of our interns recently saw a squid guy fall into a creek during a turf war, and guess what?! The squid dissolved! This suggests that these creatures can’t maintain a solid form when submerged in water. Does this mean that they’re actually made of liquid? The mystery deepens…''

So, now that we've seen PLENTY of gameplay and info, is this a game you nerds are gonna buy on May 29th?

I know I will. It looks awesome.

Is there any preorder bonuses anywhere?

I am defiantly gonna preorder this soon, just want to make sure no one has any bonuses.
From the sounds of today's Direct, Gamestop has the exclusive pre-order bonus:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/05/07/pre-order-splatoon-get-a-free-costume-for-smash-wii-u

Here's all of today's news from the Direct, via IGN:

Today's Nintendo Direct may have started a little slow but, by the end, we were practically overwhelmed by ink-fuelled fun.
With that in mind, we though it'd be helpful to compile some of the biggest new announcements from today in one place. Check them out below.

Of course, that's not the only Nintendo news today. The company's financials revealed strong lifetime sales of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, along with a decision to team-up with Universal and add actual Nintendo-themed rides to theme parks. It also managed to produce its first profit in years despite missing Wii U sales targets. If you've got all that, however, then let's get cracking!

We already knew the Splatoon amiibo would be able to unlock special outfits and challenges, but it appears there's even more available too. After you've completed the 20 challenges, you'll be able to unlock one of three additional retro-inspired games that look (pretty awesomely) like NES titles.

Nintendo has announced a special event mode, called Splatfest, will take place for 24-hours on June 20. In this event you'll be able to pick up some unique items that'll enable you to customise gear. While Splatfest won't happen every weekend, Nintendo has said it'll be "irregular", which suggests it won't just be a one-off!

We also got a detailed look at how gear abilities will work and how you'll be able to re-roll gear if you're not happy with something.

New Maps, Gears and Modes Coming Post-Launch

Nintendo also confirmed free DLC, including maps, modes and weapons, will be coming once the game has launched. Though no schedule for such releases were announced, two of the new modes called Tower Control and Rainmaker were detailed.

Additionally, it was confirmed party matchmaking and support for custom games with friends won't be added until August.

I tried it out tonight, solid game but I probably won't get it day 1. The default controls are pretty bad, so make sure you adjust before getting into a match. My favorite class or w/e is probably the roller, good for getting the objective done, but with no support I got wrecked haha.

Tried the demo last night and it definitely had me in that "one more match" trance that I got from Counterstrike and Modern Warfare.

My concern is the lack of variety. How different could the full game be? I think the paint/swim dynamic could make for some fun platforming though.

I was only slightly interested prior to playing it. Now I think I might pick it up.

Loved the demo. Went for a passing interest to something I will be buying day one.

Feels different than almost anything I've played before, everything seems really well balanced too.

I think it's going to be as diverse as Smash but with a smaller number of maps/characters. By that I mean each match is different from the last. There are also different rule types and there's ranked match for when you want something more serious.

Yeah I feel like each match was slightly different than the last. Just different weapon sets for a team changes some strategy to it. Also had the same "One More Time" feeling I always get with Smash as well.

I missed the demo but I really want to get this game. Maybe not day 1, but definitely sooner than later. I want to support Nintendo trying out a new IP like this, especially since it was mentioned that Mario almost became the main character when they were planning it.

I really hope that they do another test session like they did. It's a good way to get people interested in the game. I hope that they do another one the weekend before the game comes out to give everyone another shot at the game.

I don't know about this game's in-store availability though. It seems like it'll be one of those that just kind of disappears from stores like Pikmin 3. With it being online-centric for the most part (or at least, I'm gathering that's the focus with single player or 2-player couch co-op being the afterthought), I think it's a game that Nintendo's going to push towards the digital side. And didn't Nintendo offer up special skins or costumes in these demo sessions if you preordered the game? That was kinda my first hint that it might not be a game we see at retail too long.

I have an inkling that you're correct!

They did offer some special skins if you pre-order a digital copy and some rumors have been that they will offer a free game with online purchase. Similar to what they did for Mario Kart 8 but only for digital copies. I do agree that the physical version will be hard to find after a month or two. I would suggest you pre-order from Best Buy if you have GCU. There are no good deals out there for the game unless you include the Super Smash Mii skins you get if you pre-order from Gamestop.

If Nintendo does another free game giveaway I'll probably buy this game digitally (assuming it's a good offer of a freebie). The MK8 giveaway was actually the biggest reason that I got a Wii U last summer. I knew eventually I'd get the console and MK8 and figured I might as well just buy the damn thing then, enjoy the game for potentially years more than I would, and get a free game out of it.

I hope that rumor plays out. If it does Nintendo just might get $60 of my money right there.

Did not try the demo sadly. Is there any chance of getting the Amiibos or are they sold out preorders everywhere?

I am partially excited for this game. I say partially just because of bad timing. It comes out a week after Witcher 3 and my attention will be all in on Witcher 3. I would be way more excited if there wasn't a huge game like that in my backlog. With that said though, I really love the idea of the game and it looks fantastic.

You can still pre-order the Boy and Girl figures now at Walmart: http://www.walmart.com/search/?query=splatoon

The three pack with the exclusive Squid figure looks to be a hot item, so that is sold out unfortunately. The three pack hasn't been impossible by any means but definitely difficult if you're not constantly monitoring amiibo news.

I'm glad this game is getting some attention from fellow CAGs. Hope to see y'all on the 29th.

BTW, I really want a Mario Sunshine themed map on this game.

How's the online? I haven't had a chance to demo the game yet because Nintendo silly Global Test Fire never being on days that work for me. I don't know why they didn't just make the demo open for a couple of weeks, but whatever. I am very interested in this game, but I am not sure if it's going to be worth my money at full price come launch. It seems to be a multi-player game for the most part and from what I have seen the single player is a glorified tutorial for the multi-player.

Now I have no issues with buying a game like this, but my biggest issue would be that I don't have a ton of people to play games with on the Wii U online, Smash Bros and Mario Kart are both great for local play, but Splatoon seems suited for online and not local play as much. I think I will see how the game does at launch, but I don't have high expectations for it to sell all that well, with it being a Wii U exclusive and a new property from Nintendo. I don't believe Code Name S.T.E.A.M. has sold all that well either and I feel Splatoon will unfortunately be the same way.

Splatoon, though, is getting much more publicity than STEAM plus Amiibo tie-in, and Splatoon is aimed right at Nintendo's biggest demographic. I don't expect Mario Kart numbers, but I don't expect STEAM numbers either.

I expect it to better than STEAM for sure, especially since its the only big game coming exclusively to the Wii U for awhile, probably until Mario Maker comes out. It's the online support with Nintendo's history of botching online play that has me worried.

If the Testfire proved anything it's that Nintendo was able to handle a lot of people on their servers at once. I played 2 of the 3 hours and I don't think I ran into any problems at all. I was concerned about that, but after the Testfire I think it should be good.

Looks like Nintendo had a major issue with this round of the testfire. I was able to get in but still haven't been able to connect to a single game. NintendoLife is reporting lots of issues so I guess that I'm glad it isn't just me this time.

I'm not sure I'm going to get this game after all. In looking at things, I want to support new IP but I really don't want to support having to buy $35 amiibo sets to unlock everything. After tax you're looking at over $100 for this game and the amiibo, which is crazy (and I say this as someone who has about a dozen amiibo figures).

Add in that the testfire I was able to get into was naturally the one where things went haywire and I'm not sure I want to plop down the money for this just yet. I do like the implementation of the GamePad into the game. It's a bit wonky at first, but I think I started to get the hang of it in the solo stuff. And that's when everything appears to have crashed.

The amiibos don't really unlock much aside from some challenges and gear.

I was able to play in all the previous testfires. This one, was only able to play a round.

I watched a few youtube videos of people playing the previous testfires (including one from Nintendo) and was sold on buying Splatoon Day 1. I really wanted to play, but unfortunately I wasn't able to play even one match today. Oh well, guess I'll just go play the tutorial again.

Edit: IT'S WORKING!!!

It looks like if you exit out of battles, it's a hassle to get back in but you can battle now just fine. I just did 2 battles (1-1 :() I'm still not sold on Day 1 but if this works decently for the next 45 minutes or so I'll probably get this game soon.

Just had a weird bug where the map on the GamePad had me labeled as someone else on my team, and they were labeled as me. That was kinda awkward because it made it tough to follow.

Edit- I'm likening this to a more cartoony and faster-paced version of Team Fortress 2. I'm thinking that the option for longer matches in Splatoon would be great (5 minutes has always seemed like a good time span to me). It's certainly on my radar, and I do have both Amazon credit and Walmart GCs I could use, so there's a chance I'll get this when it comes out.

Alright, so I was able to play after all and I have to say it was pretty fun. I had a lot of success using the Splat Roller. The sniper was my worst weapon by far. I did die a lot of times in enemy territory because I ran out of ink. I wish there was an icon that displayed your ink level on-screen without having to go in Squid mode. I felt the camera was kinda meh, but that might be because I rarely ever play shooters. I think once I get use to the controls and find the right balance between attacking and recharging, I'll really enjoy the full version once it's released.

I'm a little bummed that I didn't get to try the demo (I kept trying during the server hiccups, then gave up as 6 pm rolled around), but based on early reviews and videos, I still want to play it. Keeping my preorder :)

So I saw a commercial for the game today. It was on Adult Swim around 2:30 am Eastern. It did a good job I thought of catching the craziness that this game looks like. I was surprised to see a commercial since I hardly see them for Nintendo titles (I'm pretty sure the last one I saw a commercial for was the Pokemon re-release on 3DS).

I hope that Nintendo markets this well. It needs to sell well enough to get them to take chances on new IP.
