do you need some kinda software to use usb controllers with some games? I know the 360 controller has software for it, but i mean like  plug and play old school SNES style controllers and the like. I have one that seems to work with some games and not with others. Im guessing you need a program or something?

recently i snagged boot hill heroes btw and it doesn't seem to recognize the snes controller

On Linux, Windows and Mac - All USB controllers are plug and play. They just work.

NOW - Do all games support controllers - NO.

You can MAKE all games work with the controllers of your choice. When I was on Windows -  I used Joy2Key - http://joytokey.net/en/ - I had ALL of my games working with USB controllers.

On Linux - I use AntiMicro - https://github.com/Ryochan7/antimicro

i think it may be the game. Games that have a controller setup menu the usb snes controller works fine, but boot hill heroes and some others that dont seem to only take xbox controllers

i guess i need a 3rd party program like the one you linked?

Try 'em - They are free anyway - Why not. I've gotten all of my games to work with USB controllers.
