There was also some information on Torchlight Frontiers at PAX but since it basically points to a F2P MMO run by Perfect World/ARC I really don't have much positive to say about that little revelation...

Let's just throw online-only (MP-only, MMO-lite or full-blown MMO) onto everything these days!

D3 is online-only (PC only) when D1+D2 wasn't; Destiny 2 is online-only; COD: BO4 has no SP Campaign (yet all other COD's did); Fallout 76 is online-only (when all of the other Fallouts that were released were SP-games); and Torchlight Frontiers is online-only (when TL1 was offline and TL2 could be played either offline or online).

Really getting tired of these trends to do everything online-only.

Can I ask the experts here to help me out?

I'm thinking I might finally pull the trigger on buying GTA V for the PC. I own it on xb1, but I don't really enjoy gaming on it any more.

Any reason to buy the $20 steam copy over the $15 CDKeys/rockstar social one? Are these good prices?

Thanks

You can always check ITAD to help for best prices, in general for any PC title digitally - https://isthereanydeal.com/

Here's GTA5 PC on ITAD, for that game's likely best prices digitally - https://isthereanyde...heftautov/info/

About Steam v. Rockstar Social Club version - well, I have it on RSSC-only since I've had it for a good deal of time and got it cheap ($20) a few years back. Ain't had any real issues w/ here, TBH. Only things I've really had to do myself is manually update RSSC from their site a few times b/c sometimes the game wouldn't update properly and/or needed a newer RSSC to get it to boot.

I can't speak of all the details as to what version is better (or not) - but this one's probably really gonna depend on if you also want some Steam benefits if they're supported there (Screenshots, Cloud saves, Stream Achievements, etc) and if you do want most of your (PC gaming) eggs in one Steam basket [or not].

Maybe someone else who owns the Steam version can speak on that version better than I could, since I don't have it on Steam...?

K I have some actual mini reviews about games I've completed recently:

I finished Torment: Tides of Numenara recently, and overall I enjoyed it. The game has pretty good writing, and if you're looking for a Planescape successor that ticks the box of being able to run through the game fairly combat free this will do it for you (I might've been in like 8 battles the whole game). However the game definitely has some issues. For one, there are very little actual locations in the game where you spend a fair amount of time. There are two large cities that eat up like 8-12 hour chunks each, a smaller area in between these that will take around 5-7 hours, and the rest of the time is spent in a location that is present throughout the game and is relatively small and visually bland. There just isn't much variety. Compare this with Planescape, which felt like it had a much greater variety of areas in a game of similar length.

Another issue is the companions...for a game that's supposed to focus on writing there was next to nothing to explore with any of the characters. They have pretty brief companion quests, but there's next to no dialogue with most of them. Another issue is I did feel like some story elements were fairly obvious (there is a character in the game that I think is supposed to be somewhat of a twist when you find out who they are at the end, but I thought it was fairly evident what their identity was pretty early in the game), and on top of that there are two characters I think I would describe as main antagonists, neither are very well developed; as a result the plot itself isn't really enthralling. Still, the game had me pretty hooked, the world itself is very interesting, there hasn't been an rpg this focused on dialogue since Planescape, and the quality of the writing that feeds into the world is good enough to make you want to play. Overall I'd probably give it like an 8/10.

Owlboy - It's kind of like a 2d Zelda/light Metroidvania where you can fly. It starts out really great, but once you get through the first two dungeons it goes downhill. The first dungeon is really well done, and the second, while not as good, is still decent. Then there's an extended forced stealth section, back to back dungeons where you can't go back to the overworld that are both significantly worse than the first two dungeons, another extended forced stealth section (the main story is around 9 hours or so, and of those 9 hours around 2 of them are spent on long, forced stealth dungeons/areas...nobody wants that), and then the last area. It's a shame because the presentation is obviously great and it does start out great, but after the beginning, the rest of the game is nowhere near as good. It honestly blows my mind the game has an 88 or whatever on Metacritic, I have no idea what critics are looking at to rate it that highly. It's still worth playing, but I'd say it's like a 6/10 or so.

More on Rebel Galaxy Outlaw:

Slide into your cockpit, switch on the Subspace Radio and listen to one of 7 stations with over 21 hours of music, DJs and commercials.

Also when you visit stations you can get 'muh inmerssshun' feeling and play pool, dice, or video games... within the game!!!

When I originally downloaded GTAV off Rockstar Social Club, it was a pain in the ass and took forever, including some error that made me restart the process.  That said, once it was up and running, I never had any trouble with it.  If you have friends on Steam who play GTA Online or think you might want the easy screenshot sharing, etc of Steam then $5 isn't much premium to pay for it in my opinion.  On the other hand, if you want to save five bucks, I don't think RSSC is going to ruin your GTAV experience.

Doesn't sound like there's an SP Campaign Offline Mode in this game.

Looks like it's listed as a MMO/Online Multiplayer game on Steam.

Isn't that par for the course w/ these kind of games, when they pull the plug & shut-down?

yeah, from what i read last night soleil is made up of former Valhalla devs who remade the multiplayer component of devil's third for gameforge as a free to play multiplayer game.

I started playing The Surge today after getting it from that Humble Monthly the other month...it's surprisingly good. I was skeptical of it after it got mediocre reviews, and I thought Lords of the Fallen was really bad. The combat still isn't quite perfect, but it's more than good enough. The level design is really good overall, instead of having bonfires like dark souls, each level has a single rest area, but as you make progress through the level every now and then you find a shortcut/door/elevator that has a fairly clear path to the rest point. The narrative/lore so far seems...meh...it's not as interesting from that perspective as the souls series. Also as a futuristic sci fi game set in a research facility the environments aren't that varied. Still, if you want a decent copy job of Dark Souls I recommend the game.

I didn't like the like 5 minutes I played of Dark Souls but I liked the 5 minutes I played of The Surge.  Best endorsement there is.

You should contact Focus Interactive and see if they'll pay to use your quote as part of marketing

Very Cool. Also it's very cool to see a CEO open invite anyone to take a tour of the studio like that.

I mean, past Angband you've only got pretty similar stuff all the way down to Rogue. I suppose we could have gone into NetHack, Hack, and Moria, but beyond those, we're getting pretty obscure. Are ADOM, Crawl, or ToME older than Angband?

ToME is derived from Zangband which is derived from Angband which is derived from Moria.  I think ADOM and Crawl are different branches off of Rogue, as is, of course, NetHack.

(And by ToME, do you mean the current name or the original name?)
