will target be liquidating soon?

Naylord

CAGiversary!
I hear we managed to defeat Target as a retail chain; I'm hoping they'll do a selloff of all their video game stuff before they run away. Have you guys heard of anything with regards to them putting games on clearance sales?

let all the workers go in the woods and see how long  they last in their little  target bullseye  shirts  :)

mostly they will sell their stock to another company before losing major cash on games

As a Target employee from day one I was going to give some info but I guess I should run away and live in the woods instead.
@arnoldrimmer You could always give the info to me, I'm not approving of slidecage's comments in any way. I'm actually sad for Target employees who are losing their jobs.

Plus I like your avatar.

I find retail liquidations to be the worst

$4 for a box of cereal? Wait, AFTER the 40% discount?!!??
That's just the first part of these kinds of retail clearances. It usually goes like this:

*think $4 is a ok-ish price, you kinda want the cereal anyways

*go through cashier, and cashier applies 80% discount to cereal making a box 80¢

*think to self "wow, I should really stockpile some at this price"

*get back to cashiers with arms full of boxes and see the lines have ballooned up to a massive size

*wait through line, find new cashier working register

*new cashier refuses to offer any discount and insists you pay $4 for each box

I'll really miss Target. I was excited they were coming and they fulfilled my biggest hope -- that they'd implement their (smart) clearance practices here. Great way to move stuff off the shelves... and I got a lot of deals, as well as doing a lot of regular shopping there.

Unfortunately I think a wall of (too) high expectations, and operational challenges combined to make it a lot tougher than they expected.

I was just in Target today and got a little information. The liquidation details are still being worked out, as everything needs to be done through the court appointed overseer. The most likely scenerio is a staged liquidation, with sales starting at around 10% off, and gradually moving towards 70% off right around the time the shelving is also up for grabs.

One interesting note, all of the gift cards have been removed from the store. This includes all XBL, PSN, and eShop cards. As these have no value until activated, they will probably not be sold at all during the liquidation, as they would represent a net loss to the company over and above the current inventory losses.

No one in the store is sure about new shipments, as the policy of hte company is currently to cancel ALL future stock orders. If it isn't in their warehouse now, they don't want it coming in at all. This includes all media and games, so don't be looking for new releases past the next couple of weeks.

Target gift cards are still being accepted, but use them ASAP! Now that they are under creditor protection, these are ticking time bombs, as once the liquidation starts, they'll probably be no good.

Refunds are another question, as the store near me was still taking them, but this will change fairly shortly. They will probably honor them up to a certain date (like the 15, when protection was granted) +30 days.

Given the state of the stores, I'm not hopeful for much in the way of deals.

I also received a little bit of info today, echoing what was previously said. Keep in mind this is simply given by staff, so may not be accurate

  • any new stock is only that which is in transit.  No new stock will arrive
  • all XBL/etc cards are gone.  Last price I saw was $42 for 12 month XBox LIVE which was good. Had no idea or i would have picked one up.
  • Nothing was currently on sale other than clearance items, which I've always found were very well priced there.

In a separate comment I was told that an attempt may be made to sell off some stock to Walmart, but not sure if that was a "guess" or not.  Seems unlikely to me, but who knows?

I would personally not expect any major deals on anything game related.  They never had enough stock to survive much past the 10-25% discount phase of liquidation, and that is pretty much what happens with a minor price drop on a tax-free day at Superstore.

I will sure miss that store though...great customer service and a better experience overall than any Walmart in my area.  I just wish they had opened an on-line store when they came.

Oi, does that mean they won't have the Rosalina and Luma Amiibo next month? Meaning, Canada won't be getting her, unless Nintendo makes it exclusive to a new store.

I'm sure Nintendo of Canada will change which retailer carries her; they'll have stock, but they're no longer selling it to Target, so they need to sell it to someone, and they're not going to shaft a whole country out of a SKU like that. Walmart is the most similar retailer to Target, and they don't have an exclusive amiibo, so that might make sense, but I hope it's EB Games, as they'd be the most competent at turning around the situation and rushing the product to stores (plus they'd do pre-orders, even if just for one day, which Target and even Toys 'R' Us aren't doing).

EB already has Shulk though. Would be unfair for a retailer to have two exclusives. I'm going to dread the day Lucario releases.

Over at RFD some posters are saying that staff at their stores are advising people to use their gift cards within the next few days. It's pretty standard for court sanctioned liquidation that gift cards become worthless (unless you want to get in line behind the other creditors).

Yet another reason why you should never ever ever buy gift cards. The only acceptable reason is if they do a promotion where for some reason they give you free stuff with the gift card allowing you to come out ahead over using cash but that is rare.

10%-15% most likely for the first day. If you don't go tomorrow though, you might miss out on all the good stuff when the sale gets better.
we should picket around the store then; don't let people through to buy the games yet! We must HOLD until the prices drop 75%!

I can confirm it's a 10% across the video games section... which is good for hardware (they're starting to fly already) but not so good for the rest, as most of their pricing on games hasn't been adjusted in a timely fashion (NSMB Wii for $59.99 ?!?!)

It's a gamble: save a little on everything now or save big on nothing later

Most people over on RFD are complaining at the discounts. I dont know what people were expecting, this is always the way liquidation sales happen. The discount starts off low to clear out some stuff then increases to get rid of whatever is left. They aren't juat going to reduce everything by 80% on the first day!

While you're absolutely right about gradual discounts, it's frustrating to find stuff discounted for liquidation at a higher price than the general Canadian MSRP or previous offers at the very same chain. I remember seeing their bungee chairs at $25 this summer, why would I consider $40 minus 10% a good deal ?

Although, one wonders if they'll apply 10% off over price matching, that would be less of an insult.

People are complaining about the discounts because I read an article that said this liquidation will be 'Black Friday-esque'
Yet I go into the store and see people in a 30-40 person lineup to cash out like they've never seen a 10% discount before.

See, this is the problem. If you go now, the sales are terrible. But, if you wait a few weeks or so, the sales will be much better. But, at the cost of you losing out to what you want, because the majority have already bought up almost everything at the 10% off.

It's also puzzling to see tons of people in line, for 10-30% off on discounts. It's like these people have never seen this much off merchandise before.

I wandered in just to look around, because why not. I was somewhat pleased to find the usual kind jeans I buy @ $20, on sale for for $19 (after 20% off). There's no way they'll still have normal human sizes in a week, so I picked up a pair in my size (the very last one they had) and walked around the store looking for a change room. I looped around everywhere and checked all the walls. Apparently Target stores DO NOT HAVE change rooms. What the hell, there's no way I'll every buy pants without trying them on. Target deserves to go out of business.

I've tried clothes on at Target before, so I'm not sure what store you went to, but every one I've been in has had change rooms.

Why do people feel that a store that is going out of business owes them something?

I've always had great service at Target and I've found some killer deals there. I personally will miss the place.

I'm not thinking the store owes me anything, but how poorly laid out is a store when I can walk around for 15 minutes and not find change rooms? I liked Target for video games, and found plenty of *great* deals there.

But clothes are the bread and butter that make these big chain retailers money. If they can't do that right it explains a few things. Also I've been in Target numerous times, and this is clearly the first time I've found clothes cheap enough to consider buying. After giving up on them yesterday I went over to Old Navy and found a nice pair of pants for $15, almost $10 cheaper than Targets normal prices.

Overpriced merchandise with virtually no discounts, and a bunch of rubes lining up because they've never heard of Amazon?

Actually, that's exactly what Black Friday is.

I stopped by on Thursday (first official day they started the liquidating). It was sad. Clothes and the likes had 20%, but all electronics only had 10%. There was like 30ish ppl lining up to checkout. Some even had a full cart worth of stuff. It's crazy. I mean, 10% for us in QC doesn't even cover the tax. When they put the electronics at 30%, then it might be worth for a few items.

Don't worry, it will eventually reach higher %. However, I'm not sure what will be left by that time.

Usually with these things, once it reaches a decent discount percentage not much is left.

I remember when Blockbuster was closing, I ended up at the store when everything was 50 to 60% off and people were clearing the place out. Went back for 75% and the place was bare.

that's cool but i can get tax free stuff from Superstore . so to me 15% is no big deal. unless they have lower prices for games to begin with then it would be more worth it.

Now, 20% to 40% off at my Target. (20% for videogames)

But, Watch out, I bought a 3DS game, and I actually got a used/pre-owned/demo game for full price. The Nintendo insert with the club nintendo code was gone, and .... a save file on the game.

:headache:

I've actually found some deals. I've been wanting a Vita since the new model came around, and haven't seen a single deal anywhere. They're 20% off, $160 ain't bad so I jumped on it. I expect Sony to CAD price correct it up $40-50 at some point... I found Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen for $20 - 20%, The Wolf Among Us (360) for $15 - 20%. Also I think Target is still dropping prices on things like they normally do. I found a copy of Soul Sacrifice marked at $21, and it scanned up at $15 - 20% when I went to buy it.

so next round of liquidation sales now

..is it worth trying??  wish we could see some stock.

i hear games are 50% off.. i just wonder if there's even much left.

There were a few games still around that I thought might be worthwhile @ 50% when I was there last week. It can't hurt to look around. The checkouts are painful though, it took like half an hour for me to buy a couple towels that still weren't all that cheap...

FWIW, the Target near me had lots of games left, though the prices were not great.  Many copies of Titanfall, Aliens Isolation, and others, all 50% off prices from $55 to $70.  Basically, you could find the same games for the same price elsewhere in the $25 -$30 range, so it wasn't much of a deal.  Even Angry Birds Xbox One was inexplicably $48 (so $24) at half-off.  The only thing that could be considered a "bargain" was Project Spark ($40 regular).

Really, until it hits %70 or more there isn't much to be had.  Prices were pushed up to MSRP or more, then "discounted".  I bought several titles fro Target before they went into liquidation for less than the clearance prices.

I held out on buying any games I wanted until there were only a few copies left.

I picked up Super Mario 3D Land and NSMB2 for ~$21 each.

Not amazing, but not bad for Nintendo stuff.

...and so it ends.  Today was their last day in business.

I will miss this store, though I'm sure business students will read about it for years as a lesson on how not to expand your stores into Canada.

To think the people who set this up received big salaries and maybe bonuses, when anyone off the street would have told them how stupid it was to open over a hundred stores at once with no on-line presence.   Oh well...

It was a decision, like most decisions at Target, that was largely guided by hubris.
