So how do you feel about releasing millions of genetically modified insects into the environment

This is not like a genetic modified fish or sheep, that you can track and kill instantly if it gets out of control.   We are talking about insects that would be impossible to ever eradicate if something goes wrong.

But in a future GM insects can be used as bio-weapons or mass vaccination without consent, if proper laws or rules aren't set.

Sounds like another Liberal idea that is about to go to shit in a hurry.

Who the hell thinks this is a good idea?

Hope they don't mutate and kill us all, unless they only attack Liberals, then that would be ok.

It's like the Brits don't get bad horror movies over there. Otherwise they would know this is a disaster waiting to happen.

"... a method of breeding mosquitoes with synthetic DNA ... thought to pose no significant risk to other animals." Yep, beginning of a horror movie.

While I believe the science of genetically modified organisms (be it plant, animal, bacteria, whatever) can be beneficial, I think there is too little thought given to the possible long-term effects.

Ecosystems have a way to balance themselves over time, but that becomes moot when something so novel as a GMO intrudes in that ecosystem and upsets that intricate balance.  Short-term positive outcomes can lead to potentially disastrous long-term problems. Introducing multiple GMOs into an ecosystem is pure folly at this stage of the game.

What do you expect when greed is the overriding idea for how most businesses run SB?  When you add this and man's preponderance to the idea of dominating nature rather than following it's ebb and flow you get these problems.  Look at Monsanto creating the terminator seed and the fact they actually wanted to release it into the marketplace.  Hello to possible human extinction if they would've released that.

Additionall, there's a reason you don't splice in animal genes with plant.  I take offense as a Vegan in the idea of those proteins being snuck in through fruits and vegetables.  I'm trying to avoid eating that stuff as I would prefer to live longer.

The safest way to modify something genetically is to follow the methods of crossbreeding et al.  In other words I'm referring to Medellian genetics.  It may take longer than one would like but it's safe as it follows the buffer of nature.
