Pokemon DVD Releases?

E-Z-B

CAGiversary!
Hi, my 7-year old kid is starting to get into Pokémon.  I tried looking through the plethora of DVD releases on Amazon.com, but I'm getting confused.  What DVD collections (not interested in alternative formats besides blu-ray) would you recommend?

Do note that the Indigo League set does not contain the Christmas episode "Holiday Hi-Jynx." You can only get that on the original releases (three sets in yellow packaging).

Here's a breakdown of the sagas in order:

Kanto (Indigo League) - Season 1 and half of Season 2, fully released on DVD as stated above. Based on Red/Blue/Green/Yellow.

Orange Islands - Other half of Season 2, part of Season 3. Filler arc between Kanto and Johto. Don't know if the two Jynx episodes are cut out of the new set but previous releases kept them. No corresponding game.

Johto (Johto Journies, Johto League Champions, Master Quest) - Rest of Season 3, Season 4, Season 5, part of Season 6. All are out of print but will begin being re-released in 2015. Based on Gold/Silver/Crystal

Hoenn (Advanced, Advanced Challenge, Advanced Battle, Battle Frontier) - Rest of Season 6, Seasons 7-9. Advanced series are out of print but are relatively easy to find. My favorite saga. Based on Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald.

Sinnoh (Diamond & Pearl, DP Battle Dimension, DP Galactic Battles, Sinnoh League Victors) - Seasons 10-13. Extremely easy and cheap to find. My second favorite saga. Based on Diamond/Pearl/Platinum.

Unova (Black & White, BW Rival Destinies, BW Adventures in Unova) - Seasons 14-16. Just completed on DVD. Kind of a mess. Based on White/Black/White2/Black2.

Kalos (XY the Series) Seasons 17 to present. Currently airing with no DVD release announced.

Just starting out, I would recommend Kanto or Sinnoh, as they are the easiest to get into and are mostly self-contained. Do note that Sinnoh is over twice as many episodes as Kanto and is spread over 23 releases and 170 episodes. Skip Unova.

As he said, Johto Journeys wasn't sold in a box set (yet). Have to track down costly individual volumes.

Much less important the spinoffs Chronicles and Origins have never been on home video here. Foreign editions required.

Interesting, didn't know that. Makes me feel a little better about getting the bulkier ones.

I think this older DVD has the "Holiday Hi-Jynx" episode as well: http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-PO-KE-Corral-Vol-21/dp/B00004UEEE/ref=sr_1_1_twi_2_dvd?ie=UTF8&qid=1427222956&sr=8-1&keywords=poke+corral

Might end up being cheaper/more convenient to grab the new Indigo League set and then add grab this disc separately if you need your Jynx fix!

Viz has already stated that boxset editions are coming later this year, so just wait instead of paying $50+ for a 3-episode DVD. And the singles don't even include the final 2 episodes of the season.

EDIT: Almost forgot the movies. Movies 1-3 (Mewtwo Strikes Back, Power of One, and Spell of the Unown) and the Mewtwo Returns special are long since out of print (no idea why WB won't re-release it) and are in old-school snapper cases. All are dub-only and in fullscreen. Movie 1 takes place in Kanto, Movie 2 in the Orange Islands, Movie 3 and the Mewtwo Special take place in Johto.

Movies 4-7 (Pokemon 4Ever, Pokemon Heroes, Jirachi Wish Maker, Destiny Deoxys) were originally released by Miramax but re-released by Echo Bridge in DVD and Blu-ray. Movie 5, for some reason, has a blue tint on all versions. The original Miramax versions are in fullscreen but include the Pikachu shorts and other extras. The Echo Bridge releases are in widescreen but have no extras. Easy way to tell the difference is that the Echo Bridge releases say "Miramax" on the top of the cover, but the original releases do not. Movies 4 and 5 take place in Johto. Movies 6 and 7 take place in Hoenn.

Movie 8, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew (one of the fandom's favorite movies) was originally released by Viz with the Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon special but was recently re-released by itself without the special. Takes place in Hoenn.

Movie 9, Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, was released in a 2-Disc Set by Viz and had a bunch of retailer exclusives. Takes place in Hoenn.

Movies 10-13 (Rise of Darkrai, Giratina and the Skywarrior, Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Zoroark: Master of Illusions) were released by Universal. None of them include extras. All take place in Sinnoh.

Movies 14-16 (Victini and Zekrom/Reshiram, Kyurem and the Sword of Jusice, Genesect and the Legend Awakened) are released by Viz. The Victini movie is actually 2 movies, one based on Zekrom, one on Reshiram. Both come in the same pack. All take place in Unova.

Movie 17 (Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction) was just recently released and takes place in Kalos. Do note that, for some odd reason, all the music was replaced for the dub.

IMO, the best movies are Spell of the Unown, Jirachi Wish Maker, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Rise of Darkrai, Giratina and the Sky Warrior, and Kyurem and the Sword of Justice. The Arceus and Zoroark movies are decent too.

If you try to get Jirachi, try to get the original version as it includes a music video of the Japanese ending song and has the best of the Pikachu shorts.

Little update. The recently released Orange Islands boxset does indeed have "Stage Fight" and "The Mandarin Island Miss Match," both of which have Jynx in them, missing from the discs. Rather blatant too since Viz apparently just took the old discs and just cut the episode listing off the menu, leaving a big empty space. While "Holiday Hi-Jynx" was a nonsensical filler episode, "Mandarin" includes the only appearence of Lorelei from the Elite Four (for some reason called Prima) and tells Ash and company where to go next.

If you want the Orange Islands, get the original 2003 releases or the 2008 boxset (which use the same discs) instead.
