Hehe, thanks for reading my snarky comment guys! Seriously, Cheapy, give the game a fair shake. It really is an amazing game. It saddens me to hear everyone on the show write it off. The combat is much faster, the weapons are badass, the environment is amazing. Ship, you play 12,000 games a year. The fact you would pass this up and not even try it is tragic! TRAGIC!!!

I can't believe the American Top Gear isn't hosted by Jay Leno and Adam Carolla, two talk show celebrities who are obsessed with cars and friends in real life.

Top Gear will just get new hosts and move on. They've had many different hosts before. And honestly, the current crew isn't that good. May and Hammond are just there for comedic effect, and Clarkson talked about cars in such generalities that he wasn't very good at imparting information.

If you have the Velocity network, check out Fifth Gear (http://www.velocity.com/tv-shows/fifth-gear/). This is a show for people that love cars. No stupid treks across country in crappy cars. Experienced, hosts that realize that the star of the show is the cars. It's a great show that is criminally overlooked.

I had a weird dream the other night that Shipwreck was showing me around his basement while our wives watched and giggled. I was trying to convince him to open it to the public as a museum. We then went to Skyline for dinner. Somehow I think this is what actually happens when he has people over.

I think this is all of the God of War games for PS3 and PS4 so far:

God of War III PS3

God of War Collection PS3 (God of War 1 and 2)

God of War Origins Collection PS3 (God of War GoS and CoO)

God of War Saga PS3 (GoW 1,2,3,GoS, and CoO)

God of War Ascension PS3

God of War III Remastered PS4

It makes no sense to me to take one game out of a 5-game compilation and release it separately as a new remaster.

Bloodborne is in that "Legend of Frank" area now where websites with a review staff know who's the

"From Software" Souls guy that wants to play the game, and therefore the game gets great review scores. I'm not saying it's a shit game, I'm just saying that it's easier to get good review scores because of this if the game is as good as previous games or slightly better.

I like how Wombat talks everyone's ears off about playing the second-greatest hits of 2013 with his kids, but when someone wants to talk about something new and unique like Elite, he makes a big show of how much he's tuning out of the conversation. Sometimes he even literally gets up and walks away. This broadcasting of how much he'd like the conversation to move on happens practically every time Cheapy or Shipwreck want to talk about PC games, and it's getting to be a bit aggravating.

Sorry, but I cry foul on this whole "Bloodborne is getting good reviews because it's a scam/it's From Software/the critics are biased/I did't get laid last night" bull crap. It's an excellent game.

Maybe if the entire critical landscape - every major critic across the board - is giving this game stellar reviews, maybe it's not them, maybe it's you? hmmm? HMMMMM? It feels like there is a backlash from people just not good enough or dedicated enough to play it.

I am pretty sure that cheapy was joking when he said it was a scam. . . however he did have a valid point. The majority of the reviewers who reviewed the game were "souls" fans who based their opinion off old From Software titles. If it was a good "souls" game it would get a good score. A person who hates sports games would never be asked to review FIFA, same thing in this case.

Exactly! I used to review games for a small Xbox website years and years ago. Being a huge wrestling fan, I would be the guy to always get the wrestling games for review, unfortunately they were all quite terrible on the Xbox. Usually when someone on staff is a huge fan or plays a lot of a particular genre or game style, they will be the one to review it as well. A lot of times on bigger releases, at leas the site I worked for we would all call dibs on bigger releases and hope that we were going to be the one to review it and I'd imagine that most sites do the same thing. I would never review a Madden game because I hate them and would give it a poor score just because I don't like the game and have no interest in it.

Cheapy, Not to get all geek-tastic but Steam's downloads are in MBps whereas your ISP measures your bandwidth in Mbps. 10MBps from Steam would be 80Mbps worth from your ISP. Which is pretty nuts. Best I get is 4MBps on my 30Mbps TWC. Ok, I'm done.

As always. great show!

I had never played any of the Demon or Dark souls games but wanted to give Bloodborne a chance.  I am really liking it and find that even though it is incredibly hard and very frustrating almost all the time, it is still very satisfying.  Don't ask me why but  I think that you guys should at least give it a shot and try it.  Give it a shot, you might be surprised .....or you might smash your controller against the wall in frustration.

Bloodborne is by far the best game in the series. I dont think i can go back to playing dark souls games after bb.

It's actually more casual friendly than dark souls

-no more item weight to worry about

-hp pickups all over the place and extra ones you pickup go right to your storage bin

-fewer weapons to choose from but they all seem more powerful in general but theres still a ton of choices because of all the ways you can customize them and they transform

-if you spend your "insight points" (points earned from killiing bosses, helping others kill bosses or discovered on levels) you can summon other players to help you kill bosses and the game is ridiculously easy.

-apparently spending your "insight" points actually makes the game easier. the more insight you have, the harder it becomes so like pro players can keep helping newbies/accumulating points to face a harder game while people who just wanna relax can keep summoning and also enjoy the game spending their points to see the story. its pretty brilliant.

-it's now very, very easy to summon your specific friend. you go to network settings and set a password to your summon. if you and your friend use the same password, when you use the summon bell and they use theirs youll get matched together. i had no problem match making with my friend from ds/ds1/ds2 to kill a couple bosses together. party chat makes for some very strong coordination. it was also alot of fun exchanging secrets we learned about npcs/areas and the different turn of events depending on how you interact with them.

-nearly every level has a shortcut very close to the boss. so like you clear out an area and collect stuff to open a shortcut then theres no pressure if you dont kill the boss first attempt because you can get back easy or just spend your blood and take the shortcut to get to the boss. no penalty for dying as far as anyone can tell so far.

-Invasion mechanics don't begin until after you've killed like 7 or 8 bosses and are a good chunk through the game and your character is significantly developed.

I one shot the first boss. Difficultywise, i'd say its easier than the souls games your first time through because you get more health pickups and you can get your health back by attacking enemies after you get hit if youre fast enough.

Loading times are not that bad. I bought an ssd to speed up my load times and a patch will further improve.

Just play smart/careful and use your items like moltovs, poison knives when you come across something hard and the stakes are high blood wise. This game will only really punish you if you dont give it your attention. If you read the notes on the ground and are careful youll be fine.

Can already tell you that BB is my goty. Looks amazing. Blast to play. All the weapons special transformations are just sick. And then theres a beastmode and all the secrets to uncover with the npcs running around. alright back to bb.

I'm not going to play Bloodborne.
I can't blame you, Ship. I really am enjoying the game myself and it is a lot more accessible than the previous "Souls" games. That being said the game is still hard and it's still very much a "Souls" game and if you didn't like any of the past games, chances are this will not change your mind about the series either. As much as I am enjoying the game, I tend to buy so many games and jump from title to title so frequently I get myself in situations where I have way more games than I do time to play them and I am sure this will happen with Bloodborne as well, but for what it's worth I respect your decision! haha

I don't understand all the bitching about old games being re-released on new consoles. Did anyone bitch when the Godfather was released on DVD? Or again on BluRay? They even charged full price for it. What's the difference? If good, older games are easier to play and look better on the hardware I happen to have hooked up to my TV, I'm all for it. If you don't agree, well... no one is forcing you to buy it. People who do this shit for a living decided that there's a market for it, and if you're not in that market, just let it go.

It's a great game, and if anyone is bringing their prior baggage from the Souls games to Bloodborne, it's their loss! I guess as video game connoisseurs you can pimp out your basements to play Olli Olli.

Again, statements like this are impossible to argue against. If a critic gave it a good score, it's because it's a good "Souls" game, not a good game in general? We're not talking the divide between Call of Duty and Madden. It's a difficult third-person action RPG. Sure, it has some trademarks - respawning enemies, the need to practice, the somewhat obscure currencies - but honestly it's not that different than Devil May Cry or some other games.

As far as the critics, Metacritic does not have a SINGLE mediocre or bad review of this game. So, you're saying all 60 critics are in the tank for From Software? Go on the Bloodborne subreddit and read all the stories of people who have never played a Souls game and are falling in love with this game.

I don't know why I care so much, but hearing everyone dismiss this as "oh another Souls game, forget it" is irritating.

Cheapy, you mentioned the flight stick that you use for Elite: Dangerous. Which one is it, I'm in the market for one.

It's really just because people like to bitch. Re-releases are relatively easy to pull off and don't require a large team either. It gives us the consumer more games to play on our shiny new consoles and it helps the developers/publishers fund new projects. I feel like the people who are complaining aren't typically early adopters when it comes to new consoles. The last great console launch I can think of was the Dreamcast. Everything since then has been mediocre at best and it usually takes a solid year for the games worth playing to start showing up. Yeah we are getting a lot of remakes, but they are usually $40 or less and they look and play better than they did on the last gen consoles. I welcome more remasters, I'd love to see South Park get one as I have yet to play it and would love to on my Xbox One or PS4.

From a preservation perspective, I think the more games that get re-released at higher resolutions and frame rates, the better. However, unlike movies, it really seems like the remasters are coming out in place of new games. Movie releases didn't slow to a crawl waiting for The Godfather on Blu-ray.

Sure, but as they say, correlation does not imply causation. High profile games aren't being delayed because of these rereleases, we're just seeing more rereleases because high profile games cost increasingly more time and money to make, and big companies have gaps to fill in their revenue streams.

Well when they double-dip on the same format, yeah, there is a lot of bitching. And there is a big difference between releasing movies and games. So much so that this really doesn't make any sense. If movies were more like games in your comparison, it would be as if Spielberg refilmed Jaws instead of moving on to his next film - Close Encounters. Think about that. We'd have a higher resolution Jaws and never have Close Encounters.

Remastering (someone think of a better name, please!) games had it's place. In the beginning days of a new generation, it helped a studio learn the ropes of the new tools and environment whilst providing an income. But we are well in to the current generation. That adjustment period is done. The fatigue with remasters is that we bought new consoles for new games. It's time to focus on that.

This might be one of your best podcast titles yet LOL. Also, good episode. I felt like you guys were kind of all phoning it in so-to-speak the last few weeks (or maybe I was just in a bad mood/distracted), but you guys seemed more engaged this week. Either, way, thanks for giving me something to look forward to every week for the past 8 years that I've been listening. It will be a sad day for me when this finally comes to an end.

As someone who often waits until games are cheaper before buying, I like when you talk about slightly older games as well. (Wombat talking about Rayman for example). How do you guys feel about the constant pressure to play the latest games? Would you be going to your backlog more if you weren't hosting a gaming podcast?

I scarted.

Your Spielberg analogy doesn't make any sense. The creative teams who make the original games are not the same people who port those games to a new system. Remaster projects are typically outsourced to firms that specialize in that sort of project. Production on Halo 5 didn't stop while the Master Chief Collection was being made, nor will the God of War 3 remaster have any impact on the release schedule of new games from Sony Santa Monica. No one needed Speilberg's help to release Jaws on VHS, or DVD, or BluRay. Someone else did the job while he made other movies.

It's really strange how this podcast has defended a game like Ryse when it's the definition of graphics over gameplay. You claimed reviewers were harsh becuase the Metacritc was too low, yet Ryse did have a dumb "Simon Says" combat system with colors on the screen that you have to match on the controller. What does a game that relies on QuickTimeEvents for combat really deserve?

And here we have Bloodborne, a deeper stat and item based RPG using an interesting physics based combat system, yet none of you on this podcast can be bothered to even try the series before either claiming a score in the 80s (which missed the mark even if you want to pretend it didn't) or just having Shipwreck post here to flat out say he'll never touch the game.

You'll keep trashing this 90+ Metacritc game, so it doesn't matter what I say and I shouldn't care. You can keep your conspiracy theories on reviewers for this game, but it's disappointing and I'm unsubscribing to your podcast, because I really don't think you're being genuine anymore.

That's a bit harsh. They've got a few preconceived notions but they're genuine and still entertaining. I dont agree with a ton of the stuff they say sometimes but wombat does a great job of balancing out ship/cheapy. They've got a good balance of pcpcpc and consoledad and listening to that intersection of viewpoints. If it was just one sided pcpcpc or consoledad, i couldnt stomach either.

You won't be beating this game in a few days and learning everything possible and they're more into covering whats new and hot week by week. They've always geared more more towards games as consumable media and covering the latest and greatest rather than covering deep gameplay mechanics.

Souls games at the very core are deep. They have this deep level of combat like a fighting game that's designed to keep you hooked in for months if it doesn't immediately turn you off. The story is buried in layers upon layers of secrets that you have to work to discover as you play. Add on the uneasy tension that theyre designed to make you feel and theyre definitely not for everyone. That moment of discovery when you walk into a new area and the high you get from uncovering a secret is so worth it if you have the time, patience and guts to do it.

They have a valid point that the reviewers may have been into these types of games but it's much better to have a reviewer who is into them because those are the people who are going to be buying/supporting the franchise year after year after year. Not every game is designed to be played by every type of player. But the hope here is to get more players engrained into this midcore/hardcore style of game.

It's good that they dont have people who dont like these types of games doing reviews on them and its fair to not want to play them, but From seems to have done a great deal to make them more accessible and less punishing. You wouldnt want souls games to be for everyone because they'd be bastardized and lose what makes them great.

The story in BB, while still shrouded in alot of mystery, is a bit easier to follow and the game is worth checking out for the creepy environment/atmosphere alone. Just don't eat a big meal before you play because the uneasy tension the game is designed to have might upset your stomach. True victorian horror at it's finest. Easily the best looking game ive seen on the ps4 to date with all of the detail in the environments and the effects like fog/lighting.

And for the love of god don't use the madman's insight consumable. If you have very low insight, the game is pretty damn easy, but when you start getting near 99 insight it starts feeling more like the original demons souls/ dark souls games and very punishing. Just spend every insight you get an enjoy the coop and cool enemies/bosses if you want to experience it more casually and have a good time.

My most fun times with the game so far have been playing at 80/99 insight coop. It's downright brutal. But with a friend, it's really good because we're both experienced and we're not just steamrolling it. We did steamroll the poor dude who tried invading me.

It sounds like I would enjoy Elite Dangerous, but the title sounds very stupid. Glad they put a lot of thought into the gameplay mechanics and controller, but when I think the term "Elite Dangerous" it sounds like some European parody of a American Commando game or something. Maybe they should it called it Kessel Run or something.

RYSE is not simply QuickTime events. It's got a really fun combat system. I genuinely like RYSE. I do not enjoy what I've played of the Dark Souls games and do not have the time or patience to play them. I'm not sure how I can be more genuine.

I think the people who don't get Elite: Dangerous's name don't realize that it's the followup to the classic game Elite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_%28video_game%29

And yes, it's British, so you got that part right.

While all three of these hosts play a lot of games, I would not describe any of them as "hardcore" gamers. And when I say that, I mean that none of them are going to have the patience or commitment to appreciate and get satisfaction from a game that requires methodical play and patience. I'm sure Ship played about 30 mins of Dark Souls, died 10 times, and said "nope." Now he's forever biased against From games, and that's his loss. The rest of us stuck with and and found some of the most satisfying and rewarding video game experiences we've ever had.

I like hearing some of the banter, but I don't tune in to the CAGcast for anything beyond a casual gamers perspective. It would be great if this gaming podcast would embrace the GOTY to date, Bloodborne, but you should shift perspective. Ryse is probably the most "hardcore" game these guys will ever champion, and that's a pretty shallow experience as we all know. X, X, X, Y, X, rinse, repeat.

It does get irritating when they imply that there is something wrong with the comminity of fans. We'll have another round of Bloodborne hate when Cheapy comes back after trying it.

(And, no, pimping out your basement with 20 consoles doesn't make you a hardcore gamer - especially when I'm guessing only 3 of those devices will be turned on on a semi-regular basis).

I disagree that this is a valid point. You're saying every single one of 58 critics were already fans of the Souls series?

Bloodborne deserves its 93 score because it's appealing to ALL types of critics, not just those that love these games. Again, go to the Bloodborne subreddit and you see story after story of people who either never played a From game or tried Dark Souls and didn't like it, who are loving this game.

One of the WORST scores on Metacritic, an 80 from Cheat Code Central, starts with this paragraph:

"I have to admit I never got into the Demon’s Souls or Dark Souls games. They were just never my cup of tea. Not that I didn’t appreciate the games for what they were, it's just that I tend to not want to be overly punished by things just for the sake of punishment. At least that’s how I felt, but after hours and hours of playing Bloodborne, I took a day to center myself enough to come back to the game and be surprised at what I found."

So, let's put to bed this ridiculous canard that only Souls fans review these games positively.

It's really no different to a franchise like Forza getting very good reviews across the board everytime a new one comes out (apart from the rushed for launch Forza 5). But because Cheapy doesn't like the Souls series and feels left out, he comes up with a conspiracy theory to explain it.

I have played hundreds, maybe thousands of games over the last 30+ years, owned dozens of consoles and recorded over 400 podcasts on the topic but please tell me again how the definition of "hardcore" is defined by whether or not I have finished one of 4 games.

Wombat, aren't you the guy that plays most games on Easy? And I certainly did NOT say that harcore is defined by one of four games...I'm surprised that's how you read my statement. Maybe "hardcore" is not the word I'm looking for, but my statement still stands.

"None of the hosts is going to have the patience or commitment to appreciate and get satisfaction from a game that requires methodical play and patience." (and where the story, mechanics, and progression aren't practically spoon-fed)

What game have you played recently would you put in that category? (please don't say) Dragon Age?

I'm surprised you being the one that we can all agree on as being the MOST casual of the three is the one to get most defensive.

Also, Ship, you don't know if you would like or enjoy Bloodborne. You haven't played it.

EDIT: It's funny/sad how your response was "Liked" even though you clearly set up a straw man argument and totally missed the point of my post. C'est la vie.

I think it's very different. There is no genre of "Dark Souls." Bloodborne is a difficult action RPG. Forza is a racing game. GTA is an third person open world shooter. Maddon is a sports game.

Ship: "I don't not have the time or the patience..." lol, I believe you don't have the patience bro. But time? You share the countless hours you put in to games every week. That's ridiculous. You have plenty of time to play the game, you just don't have the patience to get good at.

I have been playing a decent amount of Rogue Legacy & Hand of Fate. I think those games fall into the category you deem worthy. Again, you seem defining someone's worth by the type of game they play. I am not being defensive about me, I just can't believe that there are still people that think it's ok to judge someone's worthiness to play games. I find it gross.

Not judging...evaluating based on the things you yourself have said. As soon as Bloodborne was brought up, you practically ran out of the room. This has been a theme any time a game like this has been mentioned. You guys say "I don't have the time or patience" as a badge of honor when it suits you, then the minute you perceive that as a weakness you get upset? I'm just saying back to you what you've said in so many words about yourself. Next time someone says "Wombat you would hate this" take note of the type of game they are talking about. Sort of like how you all mock the Etrian Odyssey series. THAT's the type of game I'm referring to.

I mean Gerstmann doesn't like the Souls games either, but I can still hear discussion about them, Etrian, etc, on that podcast because they are a more well-rounded panel of hosts. Take that as judging if you want, I would call it an observation.

And no, I wouldn't count two games you can play in 10 minute chunks in the category of games I'm talking about.  I would say Cheapy is the closet to what I'm referring to because he plays things like Elite Dangerous (but even he feels left out of Dark Souls). I don't believe I ever said "you're not worthy" my intent was more like "it's not your thing."

This is heated debate over Bloodborne is getting ridiculous. I said it earlier in this thread, but can definitely understand someone not liking Bloodborne or not caring to give it a chance. Is it better than the Souls games and more accessible, yeah it is. The thing is the game still has the same quirks and a lot of the same mechanics that you either love or hate about the Souls games. Clearly Cheapy, Wombat, and Ship have no interest in playing this game. I don't understand why people can't just respect that they don't want to play a game because it isn't their cup of tea. I've been a member of CAG for a really long time since 2004 and have listened to every podcast each week and I also love other shows like Giant Bombcast and listen to them as well, but the CAGCast has always been special for me for a number of reasons and one of those reasons is that show is just three real dudes talking about video games, their lives, and generally geeky things. I've never met any of the hosts personally, but just from listening to them for so long over all these years I feel like I know these guys a little bit and I respect their opinions, while I don't always agree with them, I am interested as to what they have to say and respect them.

I'd like to know what defines a hardcore gamer to some of you here. I consider myself a hardcore gamer, despite having very little time to actually play games anymore. I've been playing for the majority of my life starting at age 3, I own all of the consoles and even have video game related tattoos. Regardless of how little time I have to devote to gaming these days I will always be a gamer and will always love video games and the industry as a whole. I feel like Cheapy, Wombat, and Ship are the same way in that regard, we all love video games and that is the common bond that brings this entire CAG community together.

I admitted that "hardcore" may not be the term I'm looking for (although that is such a broad term, in a way it is the word I mean. Everyone wants the title of "hardcore" gamer, but, come on). And I never said there was anything "wrong" with not wanting to play Bloodborne, I was just commenting that no one should be surprised. Based on what I've heard for the last three years, there is no reason to think they would want to try it, because it's not the kind of game they comment on week after week. They generally stick with middle-of-the-road AAA titles or breakthrough arcade indie games. And when the going gets tough, they switch to Easy to get through it instead of having the patience to persevere. There is no Easy in Bloodborne, so it's no shocker that it's not the game for any of these hosts. If people are taking offense with this pretty basic observation, then maybe I struck a nerve for other reasons.
