Your best option might be to use the code button and just put the link in there so people can copy and paste them if the redirect keeps breaking them. As it is, it's the flash.newegg links that aren't working for me.

Really? We need a thread dedicated to hard drives in the games deal section?
Better than a bunch of little threads here and there for the same thing, although that will probably still happen. This just gives people the option to bitch about how that info is in a master thread.

By the way, with as many games as I'm deleting off my Xbox One because there's no room on my puny 500GB HDD, I for one appreciate the thread. If you don't please move along. :D/

Video game systems and Amiibos are not video games. Yet deals are constantly posted about the former and there is a dedicated thread for the latter.

Awesome thread, OP, thanks! Will probably end up buying the 4TB WD and transferring the files from one of my 1TB over to it so I can use that in my video game system.

Don't worry about these children who have zero concept of how this is video game related. They haven't taken that class in grade school yet.

which of these would be the best for a PS4? (THERE, NOW IT'S GAME RELATED!)
The 7200rpm 1TB HGST for $65 would be the best internal for any of the systems. It's got a faster spin speed for faster file access and is a 2.5" so it will fit inside a 360, PS3, etc. You don't need the docking bay to make it external. Great for those who just got the Xbox update to 1/2 TB.

The only better price is the $40 AR 2TB Seagate with McAfee from TigerDirect that I posted in the XBL thread about a week ago. You have to pay $100, but you get $60 back in 4/6 weeks in the form of a gift card. It's only a 5400rpm, though.

So that WD for $114 is about $25 cheaper than Best Buy. Any thoughts on this as an external for an X1? More to the point, any good argument to be made to not go to Best Buy and just price match it?

Also by "ends Sunday" I presume this means it'll still be on sale still tomorrow right?

Would any 2.5 work on PS3? Found an unopened 2.5 5400 1tb Seagate Momentus HDD laying around my cousin said I could have.
Unless the drive doesn't fit in the PS3, you should be good to go.

TBH, I'm not sure I've heard of any 2.5" drives not fitting into a PS3.

I'm searching high and low for a 2TB 7200rpm Portable hard drive for the upcoming Xbox 360 update.

(would require Y-cable via 2 USB ports)

Doesn't look like such a drive is available, though.  :whistle2:|

My super special sexy search skills of saturated satisfaction found nothing.

this is just a 5400 but this is the 2tb external that was posted about before at amazon that supposedly is being used by many to upgrade the ps4 hdd.

I couldn't find the required height spec for the 360, heck i didn't even know you could upgrade the newer 360s drive. but it seems 9.5mm is probably standard.

Just one that I can think of: I'm pretty sure Best Buy's price match policy does not include NewEgg.

So far as I know, only HGST is making 2.5" drives over 750GB in size that spin at 7200 RPM right now (their Travelstar line). Their current largest Travelstar is a 1.5TB, but I think that only comes in 5400 RPM; the largest that's 7200 that I know of is the 1TB offering. I'm not too familiar with HGST, but they are owned by WD these days, so there should be some level of quality control superior to, say, a Seagate.

If you just want any old external, just find a 2TB, 7200RPM bare drive from a brand you trust and shove it into an enclosure. It's a little pricier that way, but pre-packaged externals these days don't tell you want kind of hard drive is actually inside, and the odds that it'll be over 5400 RPM are pretty well nil.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't thought of that!

Just wish I could find a 2TB 7200rpm 2.5-inch hard drive for under $180....

The Xbox One has an option to automatically shut down an external (powered) hard drive when the Xbox One console is off, right? Wonder if the Xbox 360 will have that feature when it updates.... I guess at that point my biggest concern with an external - having to manually turn it on and off to avoid wasting power - will have been addressed.

I might pick up two of those hgst drives for our ps3 and ps4.. both are really needing more space, and the speed increase won't hurt.

Whats the best deal for exterior enclosures newegg has for the original drives? I might as well add he additional space to our media server.

I've price matched Bluetooth headphones to newegg in store before.

Their current largest Travelstar is a 1.5TB, but I think that only comes in 5400 RPM
Also if I remember correctly it's too tall to pop out and use as an internal

Edit: I think I'm thinking of a different drive. Woops

Best Buy employees are pretty notorious for not knowing Best Buy's policies (I got my PSTV price matched with GCU applied; and this was after two other CS reps refused to price match it for me "because it was a bundle"), so everything to do with BB policy is pretty much YMMV. That said, while it's possible they've changed it, or I'm misremembering, but I'm pretty sure that NewEgg was not among the online retailers that BB's official policy lists for price matching when I looked it up a year or two back.

I checked our ps4,,and we were down to the last 50 mb, so we popped for a hgst for it and our ps3 slim.

No good games sales this week, but these upgrades will eat the game budget for April now. Guess we can install some of the backlog now though.

Thanks for this thread! I'd been meaning to upgrade the drives for a while now.

I may be blind but i did not see this one listed http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178340 Seagate 2.5 inch Hybrid SSD drive 1TB.
No, I skipped that one. Should be within the first link of drives though

I skipped it because I recently posted about/got a $60 external 1TB 7200/usb3.0 drive, same day they had the same interal drive at $60

SSHD and 7200 drives get same load times/etc in console tests so it's $20 more for basically the same thing not that either gets a huge difference over 5400 anyway

I did put the 500gb @ $62 though so I'll add this one

In a PS3/PS4, they're likely to have the same load times between a SSHD and a 7200RPM drive, since the system isn't working through data in a way that the SSHD is likely to make much benefit for. A PC or Mac system, that's a different matter entirely.

I had a SSHD in my PS3 and compared to the 7200RPM drive that came out of it, I didn't see much in the way of better load times or other shortened times. I do think I had some random lockup issues related to the SSHD, which is very firmware-dependent.

Neither system is a good candidate for a SSD, due to lack of TRIM in the OS.

I know the PS3 does work with a 1.5TB HDD as I just dropped a Hitachi 5K1500 drive into it that I picked up from eBay.

This is on sale till Tuesday, not sure if that means through Monday or through Tuesday

Not sure if it's any good though, cheap enough that i might grab one.

Just tested out the drive I posted earlier on my PS3. Seems like quite a noticeable speed increase on the XMB, doesnt seem like too much on the game side though. Still gotta be better than the nearly 2 year old drive that was in it though lol.

5TB is a huge amount. You'd be able to store probably 500 GoD Xbone games. Does it even support such a size, or would you use the remaining 3TB for storage? The rebate will come in the form of a pre-paid American Express card.

Oh, and I assume that it's a 5400rpm spindle speed drive, which is the slowest reading speed out of all types of drives (flash, hard disk, solid state). You will most likely experience framerate staggering when you start to fill it up. It has to search and access the files on the disk physically.

Newegg is selling a Seagate 1.5 TB external hard drive for 49.99 through eBay for today. I decided to pick one up for my PS4 since I've definitely been struggling space wise.
I almost got that a couple weeks ago, I doubt it'll fit internally and the ps4 just added the ability to back up drives, but I don't believe you can use it externally has a second drive...yet

does anyone know if this would be a good HDD for the Xbox One?
That should last you the whole cycle

If you are interested in 5tb I added this a little while ago:

Ends Monday

That ebay drive can be opened and used in a ps4, google it and you will see plenty of proof.

I've heard people say both that 5400 rpm shouldn't matter and some say it does. Not really sure what to believe.
The most intensive loading games (CoD Ghosts etc) show about a 1-4 second load time decrease. These are the extreme load times when loading a campaign level out (30-40 seconds to load total). Most only improve 1-2 seconds in the case of ghosts.

An even smaller gap for 7200 to SSD.

Overall, once a game is loaded there are very few games that will show any difference. And even games that continuously load textures only see a very small increase in performance.

TLDR; yes there will be slight performance increase in load times on all games. But we are talking about a >10% decrease MAX. Normally 3-5%. In game, usually no difference except for a few oddball games and even those games have minute performance increases.

I've been thinking of upgrading the HDD on my PS3, I've got one of the old BC ones.  I know it needs to be 2.5 instead of 3.5, but does anyone know the max size of HDD the PS3 can use?  I'm thinking of getting at least a 1TB.

that one in particular is over 15mm as an external drive, the 12mm external drive I got had the same size as the ps4s drive which I assume was 9.5mm. Also, considering they said it's .61in tall they aren't worried about fitting into something. Maybe it's got a lot of padding i don't know.

I've seen too many people claim 1TB to try anything else myself, but I've seen a couple people say 1.5TB

I can confirm 1.5TB works for PS3. I have an HGST model that I've been using for over 2 years now on my old Super Slim Model which I sold. Now I use it in my Slim and backwards compatible Fat model. No issues except for random crashes every once in a while and the PlayStation Store is a tragedy to run for more than 5 minutes as it just kicks me out constantly...but honestly that happens no matter what hard drive you use. PS3 is just completely outdated and a dinosaur by now.

For what it's worth I am almost positive you cannot go higher than 2TB since that is the FAT32 file limit. If you want proof just stick your larger capacity HDD in a PC and use a formatting tool under FAT 32 to try to do more than 2TB

- spoiler-

It won't work :)

Yeah, I hate running PSN on mine, it loves to kick me out randomly. I plan on keeping my BC PS3 as long as I can, nice to not need 2 different systems to play all my PS1-3 games. PSN doesn't have anywhere near enough older games on it for me to even considering getting a newer PS3.

Anyway, enough offtopic from me.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a HDD I could use in my PS3? I've been eyeing a 1TB Samsung on Amazon that's only $60.
