Can I use an external hard drive on a older PS3

No. You have to upgrade the internal hard drive and re-install the firmware if you want more storage space on either PS3 or PS4. There is no other option. 

PS3 is 1.5 TB max (I would recommend only using a 1tb drive 5400RPM, however.)

PS4 is 2TB max
