Terraria PS Vita physical release 6/9/15 $19.99 GS/BB/Amazon/Newegg

This really flew under the radar for me, and I'm a huge Terraria fan.  A physical (cart) release of Terraria came out on 6/9/15 for $19.99, available pretty much everywhere ($15.99 plus tax with GCU at BB).   Terraria on the Vita is possibly the best version of the game available, mainly because of the easy touch-screen controls (zooming, inventory) and ability to play anywhere you go.

I saw this at Walmart.  Been debating which version to get, PS3 or Vita.

My advice, and I have both versions (plus versions for almost every other platform), is the Vita version. The game plays fantastically on the Vita, mainly because of the added touch controls for inventory management and zooming. And it's a great game to have on the go.

I originally played on the PC, which controlled well with mouse and keyboard. Using only a controller for the console versions is a bit more cumbersome, but as I said, the added Vita touch controls really work beautifully. The PS4 version does offer zooming with the touch pad, and some other improvements as well. Protip: on console and Vita versions, turn off the smart cursor and use manual cursor, it makes things much easier IMO.

By the way, if you're looking for a physical version of Terraria for the PS3, Gamestop has a few copies available. It is quite rare as a physical release, no other retailer got them, and Gamestop only has a tiny number available (and the PS3 version doesn't even exist on the GS website, only in their internal inventory system).

Also, BB sold out of their physical versions of Terraria for both the Vita and PS4, and their PS3 version is a scummy digital code-in-a-box, even though their product page indicates a physical version.

Knowing my luck I drive all the way out for the closest PS3 version, probably only to find out it was a digital card.

Also, I might have the digital Vita version from Playstation Plus.  Having that and no physical manual is kind of discouraging.

I take it that the Xbox 360 version is pretty much the same story as the PS3 version?  Cumbersome controls.

Went looking around Gamefaqs website and there is going to be a 3DS version.  I might hold off for that portable version.

What are your thoughts on a 3DS version as a Terraria veteran?

Yeah, the PS3 disc version of Terraria is really just a cool thing for collectors. I'm a huge fan of Terraria, and I love having physical copies of games, so it was a must for me. But you do know that the digital version of Terraria is going to be in the flash sale today? Will probably be dirt cheap, so if you want that version, pick it up.

FYI, the physical version of Terraria for the Vita doesn't have a physical manual, just the usual digital manual that is accessible from the game's launch page. But a better option is to use the Terraria wiki (but use it sparingly), it has tons of great info, tips, and strategies for the game :

Yes, the 360 version is going to be the same as the PS3 version. And yes, the controls can be cumbersome.

As for a 3DS version, it would probably be a great option. You get a lower resolution of the game, though, while the Vita version will be much sharper/higher-rez. Not sure how they might incorporate 3D into it, but having the inventory options on the lower screen will be a great thing, and the game will probably be excellent on the 3DS.

Having a portable version of Terraria, either way, is the way to go; the game works beautifully on the Vita, my favorite version for sure. However, the PS4 and XB1 versions both look much sharper than the previous gen ones, and play better as well.
