Xbox.com says you can change gamertag once for free, but then wants to charge me

You can easily change your Xbox Live gamertag. If your gamertag was created for you during your initial Xbox Live sign-up (meaning, you did not choose your gamertag), you can change the gamertag one time for free.

It doesn't matter if you never changed it since you created the gamertag. It had to originally been computer generated for it to be eligible for a free one time gamertag change.

 
I've been too cheap to change my GT.  Even the one time I saw that option go on sale wasn't enough to make me bite.

My plan was to let my GT and PSN ID die with the consoles and start fresh with the X1 and PS4... of course Destiny came out and face-hugged me.  So, I guess I'll go another gen using the same name, lol.

 
I paid for a couple name changes in my day. Never had a problem with doing it. Finally found a name that stuck and I haven't bothered to change it ever since. 

Anyways, didn't XBL start doing the change your name once for new accounts and once it was changed, you had to pay to make a different one? 

 
Yes, Xbox Live has you pay to make a new one after your first initial change! It's a bummer in one aspect but as mentioned it keeps people from constantly changing names.
