So this is for the fiance as she goes to school. As much as I like to think I'm up to date on technology, I admit I know very little about what would make a good tablet aside from core things like the hardware inside.

I believe we're looking for a Windows based tablet unless I can be argued otherwise, with a detachable keyboard sort of solution for more detailed data entry as needed, preferably with some kind of stand that will hold the machine, or however they've best designed such things these days. It needs to be capable of running clinical software (which I don't expect to be any problem with a decent tablet) with use of a stylus or stylus capable screen preferred.

An example of something we have been looking at: Surface Pro. These seem a bit pricey and don't even come with the keyboard attachment. It doesn't need to be the cheapest thing in the world, however.

Is there any advice I could find here? Thanks!

Cheap, $500, baseline:

10-20% faster than the $500 one due to better firmware, $750, pretty good tablet although a little short of the best price-to-performance on record:

$999:

Surface Pro 3 i5 <3
Looks pretty slick. I had seen a few results in Google highlighting the Dell line. Do you have personal experience with any of these? Guessing the Surface Pro?

What about some of the lower cost Surfaces ? Is something like this :

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsoft-surface-3-10-8-intel-atom-64gb-silver/4967017.p?id=1219645630549&skuId=4967017

Comparable to the Dell model and why might one be -really- preferable over the other? I'm not seeing huge standouts in the specifications, it seems relatively similar.

Hypothetical, one could get something cheaper like the Galaxy Tab and use a keyboard add on for that, or even perhaps a bluetooth keyboard, isn't that right? Aside from the downgrades that would be taken, such as the reduced onboard storage/speed of hardware and other things that may not be so obvious to me.

I notice all of these seem to run Windows - is that the preference for this type of machine due to the long history/available applications as opposed to something like Android (not at all interested in Apple)?

Really appreciate the reply. The budget is probably max of the 750 range. 1k is a little much I think! But I still like to compare them so I do appreciate it.

The Surface 3 (non-pro) IS a good tablet but not for creative work. The Core M of the Dell is faster.

However, the build quality of the Surface 3 is probably the same or better. Just not the performance. We are probably talking (roughly) 50-60% the performance of the $750 Dell. It uses a small to medium tablets processor in the Surface 3 non-pro, which is slower, and the Dell uses a large tablets to medium laptops processor, which is faster.

I don't own a Surface 3 Pro but I have tried the i5 version briefly, even tried a game on it. It's really not bad.

Windows is a better operating system than Android for Content Creation. Android is only fine for Content Consumption (games, browsing the web, etc).

I own an iPad Air 2 and an Android tablet though, and iOS, I find better than Android when it comes to Content Creation. It's in between Windows and Android in that department, still being worse than Windows for photo editing.
