I bought my two Kindle Fires from Best Buy and I didn't have a problem linking them. It just asks for your Amazon username and password when you first turn on the Kindle.Took a chance on this and of course too good to be true.
Items not purchased directly from amazon arent linked to your account. When you attempt to sign in/register and it fails you are SOL. One failure to attach/register to the account and the device is banned and needs to be exchanged for another one. Repeat this process until it works, or you decide its time for a refund.
There is no chance that it works that way.Took a chance on this and of course too good to be true.

Believe what you like. My original purchase failed to authenticate. Called support and this is what i was told. My options were swap it at the retailer, return it to the retailer, or purchase directly and have the device linked on purchase. Swapped it out at best buy and the same thing happened. The 3rd time I called support before i even opened the box and had them explain what i should do. Each and every time the same failure happened. There is no chance that it works that way.
http://www.cnet.com/videos/is-amazons-50-fire-tablet-any-good/Are the new Amazon Fire tablets ($49) any good? It looks like it's got the same CPU and amount of memory from the kindles of 2012. Poor performance, I'm guessing.
