I'm not sure what would happen if you bought vanilla Destiny and then the TTK digital upgrade ($50 total > cheaper than the Legendary Edition). You'd probably get the updates, but non of the first two expansions' content, eg. missions, strikes, raid, horde mode, hardcore multiplayer, etc. though you could still get any exotics from The Dark Below and House of Wolves to drop/be sold from Xur every weekend, I guess.
Anyway, I've played this game religiously since launch, and some advice: don't get it unless you have the time + people to play with. You're not going to get value on any version of Destiny for ANY price, in my honest opinion, unless you have time to play it (10-15 hours every week minimum) and people to play it with (at least another person, but 3 people is ideal, with more being even better).
