Since it opens *only* in the Portal app... and at the very bottom in red that users will be charged afterwards..

As soon as I clicked purchase it wanted my iTunes password. :shame:

Apple's ToS will be shutting the app down for that once a few complaints go through.

yeah it's an "in app purchase" but since when is it allowed to charge someone TWICE.... first time free, then a DELAYED purchase 11-12 days later. *without any user interaction*

All it is, delayed bait and switch. You can't get the game for free... you do *not* have any way to not be charged for it later..

Just did a little searching, it's already been sent to Apple for ToS violations lol.

Either people who got the game for "free" will not be charged later.. or it will be taken away from you. (with option to pay $ for it again)

Not taking the risk.. Free is free, not delayed required payment.

Edit: the wording is the problem. And in the android version you can't redownload it ever again... or you'll be charged.

In Japan they did not have this wording, but limited the downloads. Thats what is raising the red flags. Could be translation.. but i'm not going to risk it.

From what people are saying the FF1 version is not full screen and has bright blue bars on the screen..

And triple triad has bugs they never addressed in the Japan version.

I own FF1 elsewhere, don't need it on my iPhone (or possibly be charged again for it)

Don't delete the thread.. It may very well be the wording is the problem, It was reported to Apple.. but again it may just be the wording is the problem and it is completely free, and not a delayed charge.

If that's the Case Thebacklash, then disregard this Deal everyone.

It didn't ask for a password on my end with Android though.

if i'm reading it correctly it seems..it is free so long as you download it before 8/31 it says users will be charged for downloading the app after the free period....and if the app is deleted after the free download period..it can NOT be re-acquired free of charge..it doesn't say they will charge you if you already downloaded it...it seems if you delete it and try to download it again after 8/31 then you wll have to pay for it....its just stating that if you download it now...its not like other apps you buy off the google play store where you can just redownload them free..i mean thats what the wording looks like

I've seen the wording on both stores now, pictures posted from the android's store.

The android one is the one saying you can't re download it without payment.

Apple's wording is specific on how a "limited time free" app or in app purchase can be listed... this is questionable. And thats the problem.

If I had a zero balance in my iTunes I'd get it and see what they do.

Again, this is not how it was handled in Japan's version.. which is odd.

i don't think you'd get a delayed charge, final fantasy is popular enough to cause a customer service nightmare if we all got charged in a few weeks. It probably means the button that gives it to you will just be replaced with one that does, and a pay version will be added as an in-app purchase (with the current one removed), forcing you to pay if you lose your download. If that makes sense.

Still though, it sure is FF1 iOS. No cloud saving, same graphics, same awkward controls, and now we have white sidebars you can't disable. And that sucks for people like me who like to play games like this before bed.

Thanks OP, wasn't even on my radar.

Looks like something I can play during a wait, though booting it up, it made me think of the Mario RPG, then my brain drifted to paper Mario, darn those were good games. I'd play to play those on my phone, dreams though.

After reading all the cautioned words here and on the app's store page, I'm definitely going to skip this one.
A "Free" FF1 is tempting, but grabbing an app with questionable quality that may or may not be coming after my limited funds later is a huge red flag...

It seems more like SquareEnix exercising as much control over their brand as possible, which is just what SquareEnix does especially with the Final Fantasy brand.  If it was a full app it wouldn't matter what price you paid for it, you could always download it again later without being charged.  In this case they made Final Fantasy 1 an in-app purchase instead and just zeroed out the cost.  It means they can have their own terms instead of apple's or google's.

So I don't think I'll get billed for $8 or whatever they are charging for FF1 these days, it just means that I can't expect to download it again for free later and I have to go through their horribly designed portal app each time.

So... final word

Prior to 8/31, is it free or not? We only need a yes or no.
Yes it's free.

After 8/31 as long as you don't delete it on your phone and go through the portal app it's still free. It loads as soon as you click the title on the app list. The good thing is, it's free, the bad thing is, you have to have the portal app open and it opens the game while in the portal app, so yay, less battery life because more programs are open at one time.

If anyone who doesn't pay for data is interested in knowing, you can still play the game through the portal app without wifi or data. If data and wifi are off, the portal app will ask you to reconnect every few seconds, but under the list of apps, all the games will show up. Just click on Final Fantasy and it'll load up. You might have to hit reconnect once before you get over to the list of apps(either click apps or swipe from left to right,) but no problem playing it with data and wifi off.

I played it for a little bit and it feels like a bit of a hassle to even play the game in terms of moving around outside of combat, equipping items, etc, but this seems the same with any traditional RPG on a cell phone. From what other people say how there are white bars, there's none on my phone. Going by the graphics, it's the PSP version, so in dungeons there's this really crappy effect where you can only see in the range of an oval around your character, everything outside of the visible area will be barely visible or completely black or white.

It says:

After the free download period ends, users will be charged for downloading the app

* In the Andriod version, if the app is deleted after the free download period, the app cannot be re-aquired free of charge

How do you delete it fully?

I deleted the Portal App...but does that get rid of it all the way so I wont get charged if it does happen?

I think in order for them to charge you after downloading the app for free, they needed to say the price that would be charged after 8/31.  Without these details, it would seem that the notice is saying if you want to download this game for free you need to do it before 8/31 or else you will get charged afterwards.

The free game is to get people to download the app.  The app is a way for them to collect marking information and direct advert advertise to people.

Great post, hope everyone reads it and stops asking if its free or not. It wouldn't make sense for S-E to charge anyone if we don't even know the actual price of the game! Do you understand the shitstorm that would ensue if S-E charged anyone, yet never told them what the actual price would be? Not going to happen.

This app will make a profit off of you even if you don't pay for the game (or any Triple Triad in app purchase), because it looks into the entire history of your phone and uses that information to sell ads to you. The sloppy port of an enhanced ancient game is a way to lure you into giving S-E all your information. Is that worth it to you?

The app itself doesn't sell games.  Swipe to the right so it shows the game list and go to any other Final Fantasy that's not free.  If you own it, it'll load it up immediately, if you don't own it, on android it asks if you want to open it through Google Chrome or Google Play and it opens the page to buy the game.

Final Fantasy 1 is free and won't charge you now or after 8/31 through the Final Fantasy Portal App.
