The wireless adapter is finally up for pre-order. I added this because who know if M$ will just repackage this will the controller and just eliminate buying this by itself. Anyhow I know many have been waiting for this to come out.

Quite frankly I'm surprised that it's $24.99 and not $39.99

Gamestop has this releasing 10/27

Amazon-11/3

*UPDATE: Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users can use this without updating to Windows 10

Really. M$ can't

Windows 10 only no thanks, I'm staying away from Windows 10.
This has to work with windows 8.1. That would be really stupid on (And also not surprising) if M$ did this. Too many games (Steam) has yet to be optimized with 10 yet.

I kinda just don't seeing them do that. KINDA

I gave up waiting and myself and ordered a few steam controllers a while ago. The xbox controller analog sticks were to loose for me plus the fact that I had to be wired to use it. The 360 adaptor works like a champ so I wouldn't expect anything less for this one.

Yeah honestly MS should have the wireless adapter available like a year ago. But they knew what they were planning when they cooked up windows 10. Yeah I am waiting for feedback on the steam controllers.

Whats some of the drawbacks so far for windows 10 for PC gaming?

I don't get why people don't want to upgrade to Windows 10.  It is better than 8 and better than 7 in so many ways.  I haven't encountered a single game that doesn't work on Windows 10 that worked on 7 and 8, but that's anecdotal.  There is probably a list somewhere.

I'm surprised by the price as well. I was expecting something like $40, given how they jacked up the prices of the controller, Play & Charge, and standard headset this generation. I'll pick it up when it's at Best Buy, probably. I don't need it right now.

Also, I'm on W10, no complaints. It's definitely better than W7 (better Task Manager that lets you see more telemetry and more easily control Startup programs), and it's better than W8.1 (not having to deal with the second UI ever). My guess about people's complaints is related to the privacy stuff. I'm sure most of those people also use Android phone and Google Chrome, even though Google's primary source of income is data collection and selling personal information with that data. They're probably also spilling their guts on Facebook and Twitter on a daily basis. If you're worried about your privacy, you'd better stop using the Internet, because EVERYTHING is taking your personal info, whether it's upfront about it or not.

I mean, seriously, the OS is free to upgrade to from 7 or 8.1, and people were saying that privacy stuff everyone's freaking out about was being patched into 7 and 8.1 as well, so hiding on an older OS isn't likely to save you. You can also roll back your PC to the older version, if you don't like it...

Why works far better than 7 and 8. I have it on all platforms, phone, tablet, desktop, laptop. The xbox streaming app is awesome, streamed forza 6 on my little 7" windows tablet and it worked perfectly.

Security would be my main concern with what OS I am running. If it becomes unsupported, then it is likely there will always be holes left open for hackers to peek into your private life without you really knowing (sadly being on a Mac isn't necessarily the most secure either, makes me wonder at times with the weird crashes I encounter. Edit - new OS update came out last night that looks promising to stop wannabe script kiddies from trying to access my machine). The other reason people might not like upgrading is due to Windows 10 detecting illegal Microsoft software/games. Another reason for that is to stop online cheating.

is it suppose to be $39.99? I'm surprised no real driver exists for it since its blue tooth?
There's a driver for the controller's wired connectivity, but it does not have anything wireless because it has no receiver. It is not a Bluetooth connection. From an interview VentureBeat did around the console's launch (linked from Wikipedia):

“To do that, we actually had to go inside and change the wireless protocol. We invented a new one. This is not using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, any of the other standards that are out there. This is a custom protocol designed by Microsoft that is super-optimized specifically for gaming.”

I wonder why it constantly disconnects from wireless interference then. Odd

If you ever fancy installing any mid-2000s games that use DRM like SafeDisc, you'll have to find do some trickery/hackery to get them to work, as W10 refuses to let SD run by default. Apparently it's a good thing for security reasons, so I'll probably just chalk it up as a temporary PITA.

Does this make anyone else's blood boil? This is $25 for just a repackaged dongle from last generation.

They should have updated the old Xbox 360 wireless adapter for Windows to work with Xbox One controllers. It would have been technically possible for them to do with a driver update.

How you can be so sure? Were you one of architect or programer that worked for both consoles?

And idk why you people dont upgrade o Win10. First of all its free I mean c'mon! Second, almost all if not all Gaming Laptops, GPUs and CPUs comes Win10 Ready or in case of the laptops it already have it installed. Which means it desnt have problems with games. Of course if you want to play games from 10, 15 or 20 years ago it will have problems on any OS. As someone said above of course there have to be some list of incompatible or trouble with some games somewhere like any new OS. The only bad thing I've read about Win10 on gaming is that it broke Dualshock4 compatibility and drivers.

Like I already posted, they built a whole new wireless system for the controller. I don't know that they can patch in a new type of receiver that's supposed to handle things differently. Besides, did they ever take to selling the 360 receiver on its own? I only ever saw it bundled with a 360 controller, and I wouldn't want to spend $60 on that combo for a controller I didn't need because you don't want to pay for new tech.

yah am very happy thats its still close to win 7, i dont use cortona but its awesome, cant wait till i get my halo xbox to try out the streaming to pc thing

you have some serious issues, sounds like user error, i got a third party one wireless adapter off amazon, downloaded the driver from microsoft, the instructions it came with were wrong and didnt work but somebody posted correct instructions as a review and it worked like a champ with my wireless controller, would suggest that you just admit you dont know what your doing and not blame microsoft

I wonder why it constantly disconnects from wireless interference then. Odd
yah sounds like he is doing other stuff to his computer

big stew go look it up plenty of people have disconnecting xbox one controllers.

I'm excited for this. I was hoping for an October launch since I've been keeping my eye out for one.

They did sell the receiver on it's own at one point. I believe it was $20 or so. I forgot when they stopped making them.

They use the same wireless frequency (2.4GHz), so it's more than possible.
Not necessarily true. 2.4GHz just tells you what they operate on. If the hardware in XB1 controller and adapter can better encode and decipher the signal than the previous gen can, there's no way a software patch will allow you to use it with the newer technology because it would be a hardware limitation.

I just bought a used 360 wireless adapter off Ebay and intend to use it on my PC with a "Camo" 360 controller I picked up at Target on clearance for $26 the other day. I'd be interested in using an Xbox One controller if I could find another one for cheap (Not interested in bouncing back and fourth with my current one) and if the sticks didn't have such a problem with grinding down.

I'm replacing a piece of crap Logitech F710 with the 360 controller.

Windows 10 is fine. I havent ran into any problems at all with it. No reason to not upgrade to it really.
I'm baffled about what it is in Windows10 that has people scared. It's been great so far.

tbf companies have been spying on you for a long time, this isn't new.

you can also just remove those updates.

But eh.

this would have been interesting... if i had an xbo controller. /sigh

i particularly miss the old design from the 360 adapter. This 'stick' like design is usually prone to bending or breaking. Have to hide it away in the back of the PC tower so i don't accidentally kill it.

The wireless technology between the 360 and Xbox one are not the same. Just before the XB1 came out, we came to know about this because none of our wireless 360 Fanatic racing wheels could be patched to work with the XB1. Its different wireless protocols.

Yawn and yawn. Are you still using a feature phone by chance?
Ha. Ditched those when I got a 3GS. I'm just stating that's where a majority of unwilling people come from. That and the fear of their games being incompatible with Windows 10. I'm pro 10 all the way. Love the ability to stream my Xbox and TV into the bedroom with just a cheapo HTPC I built.

I can't help but think there has to be something else other than the conspiracy theory reasons. I've never heard anything specific other than general grumblings about not liking it. Win10 is most definitely NOT Vista or 8 in any way shape or form. It's like MS has their own tick-tock schedule where ever other major version totally sucks and the ones in between are pretty damn solid.

Well it looks like Non windows users will able to use this as well! One for my PC and the other for my steam link
Isnt that built into steam link. From Steam's site below.

  • Supports Steam Controller (sold separately,) Xbox One or 360 Wired Controller, Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows, Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710, or keyboard and mouse

I'll try and find the article. But I believe polygon said that if you have windows 10 it comes with the drivers but if not you have to update via the website.

Glad this is finally getting released. Windows 10 works flawlessly for me thus far and I'm happy to eliminate some cables.

Thanks OP.

It would be great if someone would share the Windows 8.1 drivers. I plugged it in to my Windows 8.1 x64 Pro and it did not find any drivers. And it did not work...

Found it. It was ON Polygon, BUT only a comment in the thread here:

http://www.polygon.com/2015/10/12/9510881/xbox-one-wireless-controller-adapter-windows-10-release-date

Guy said he spoke to a MS rep who said it will work with Windows 7.

Yeah, so you may as well believe that pigs fly! :(

This adapter does NOT work with any OS except Windows 10. Hopefully someone will figure out a way to make the drivers work with the older Windows OS's, but for now - nope.

One of the first questions mentions how it working on Windows 7/8 has been removed. It's Windows 10 only.

Windows 10 is pretty awesome. I can see staying on 7, it's solid as all get out. 8 and 8.1 were pretty terrible OS', they had some good ideas marred by the most useless desktop interface I've ever used.
