Was shopping at Walmart when I found Jem and the Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series for $19.88. Now, there's supposed to be an 11 disc version with interviews, extras, etc. This was an 8 disc version and it seems to be bare bones but contains all three seasons and is by far the cheapest I've ever seen this go on sale. In-store only, they also have it on the Walmart website but it's $26 at the moment.

I would be shocked if you ever see classic shows regularly on Blu-ray. Especially kids cartoons. The film masters are not in the best of condition and there isn't a big enough market to justify the added cost (and yes, Blu-rays are still significantly more expensive to create than DVDs).

At best, you might see more SD Blu-rays like the upcoming Samurai Pizza Cats Blu-ray, but not for years. Not as long as DVDs are still the dominant platform.

Even on DVD, it honestly looks pretty good on my TV. It might just be my blu-ray player upscaling it, but I thought it looked great.

I kind of want to buy this for my wife, but we've recently watched the whole show on Hub, so I'm not sure if we'd ever watch it.

Sounds much cheaper than taking the whole family to see the awful movie.

Why the hell would I want shows that are three decades old on Blu Ray? That makes no sense, especially if the masters are on tape.

If they are on tape it's a waste but many older shows were shot or animated on film and would probably look great on Blu-Ray. Most of the few older shows that have actually come out on Blu look fantastic. It's a shame that not many of them are being produced aside from HD remastering for syndication or digital.

They're not producing them because there's little demand for it. It is still fairly expensive to remaster shows and the vast majority of consumers are not going to pay $40-$50 for a complete series set of a 30 year old show when you can get the DVD version for $20.

That's after discounts, BTW. The MSRP on such a set would probably be $80-$100.

Not to mention a significant chunk of sales for these sets are made in-store, and most general B&M shops will not carry kids cartoons on Blu-ray (which is one reason why the recent DC cartoon Blu-rays have been MOD).

As I said earlier if SD Blu-rays ever catch on, then you may see more older cartoons and shows on Blu-ray.

^ That's precisely why I want old shows on blu-ray. I would love to have Seinfeld and Simpsons consolidated on to as few discs as possible instead of the huge sets currently.
