BUG/GLITCH: Xbox One Formatting Itself After System Update

This is just a warning to everyone using the Xbox One. There is a bug/glitch that is causing the Console to be formatted after a system update patch.

While watching a video on the Xbox One, I was prompted to install a 2GB patch.

I installed the patch, and the console reset.
After the reset, I was given a screen telling me to hit the XBOX button on my controller..... the system then went into the first time start up procedures...

The patch had formatted my HD back to it's factor default state and I now have to download all my games and APPs all over again.

I immediately contacted Microsoft, apparently it's a known problem. So known that even the admin I was talking to told me it has happened to her

You're fine! No worries. And unfortunately there is no way to tell when it will happen but I myself had experienced the same thing at one point and I'll be honest it was a pain but I was able to download everything again! I'm sorry you've had to experience the same issue :/
She assured me all my saves will have been backed up by Xbox Live, but I still have to redownload all of my programs and data again. This just seems ludicrous that they not only have a known bug that formats the system but that they haven't fixed said bug yet....

There is even a Reddit dedicated to it.

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't been on my xbox one for about a week now. So this happens when watching a video after a system update, or a patch update for watching videos?

I have gone all digital this year, and currently have over 2tb of game data filled on my drives. I have a 1tb internal, a 2tb external collective minds media hub set up, but I also purchased a desktop 5tb external hdd to backup my data since I have had cases where I had to update a 45gb game, only to have an error start-up after the update. Having a backup has already saved me from going through the trouble of re-downloading more than a few times. Now, every time I download a new game, or successfully update a game, I just hook up my backup hdd and do a backup of that game. A cheap 500gb to 2tb external should be helpful to avoid situations like this for those large tb games.

Just System Updates can cause your system to be formatted.
It's a glitch which has happened to a few people, but the admin I was talking to didn't have a clear answer to the cause and that it had happened to her.

I had asked just before "What happened? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening again?"

and the quote was her reply.

I haven't been able to find anymore info about this except for that reddit post 6mo ago, and the redirect to the locked thread about it back in april. I opted out the preview program like maybe july cause of all the repeated updates interrupting my online play. I think those waves are all over, cause I haven't been prompted for an update in over a month I think, and again, I haven't logged on since last week.. Haven't had time for gaming lately due to work. Is this just isolated incidents for preview members and a recent preview program update?

So she just said the your SOL and a nice way  and didn't offer you anything for there problem

I would go fucking postal if this happened to me. There'd be no way I could download everything again. I already have to manage when I can go to a friend's house to download big updates and games.

That's because you live an cave from the last time I checked. ;)

I got a few months of XBL free in return.

However, she claimed they usually SOL and send people on their way.
That's ridiculous to say "whoops, we're sorry, not sure when it might/might not happen again" with a major bug like that which kills off a hard drive. Assuming it just formats my internal drive, it's less of an issue than if it formatted my external 4TB drive. Still ridiculous, no matter how you cut it.

Makes me wonder if it'll be fixed with NXB1E coming out next month or not. Guesses that it won't be.

Got the prompt to update too. Said screw it and continued. Updated like normal.

Thank you for the alert.  This last preview and series of updates has been really disappointing.  Did they even give you a time frame as to when you'd be able to play again?

One of the updates I received a week or so ago wouldn't allow me to play any games or use any apps.  It took 2-3 days before my console received a new update and it works fine now.  Hopefully your situation will be resolved quickly.

I hate sounding entitled, as this is a risk with updates and preview programs, but if you just bought Halo I'd request some sort of compensation.  You're losing Live time as well, and depending on how busy your life is you may not have a lot of time to play.

I was up and playing within a day.

I just had to re-download and re-install all my games, and reconfigure all my settings.

It was annoying to say the least, and I got a few months of Xbox Live for my trouble, but still total bullshit.

At least you were compensated. All they did was thank me for my informing them of my issue.

I was updating to the new dash and my system hung up.  The only thing I could do was the offline restore to factory default settings which wiped my internal hard drive and all settings as you described.  Sounds related to your issue Jiryn.

Mine just did a patch, reset and bam factory default/format..
It was depressing.

Does the saves for the games go to the cloud on its own or do I have to do it myself

Yikes, that sounds like a major annoyance for sure. I haven't dealt with anything like that myself, but I will keep an eye out for it.

Luckily I was able to redownload everything and got a few months of XboxLive out of the deal.. still bullshit.
