I built my son's computer about 3 years ago and haven't build another system since, so I've been out of the loop for a while.

I need a graphics card that will run Fallout 4 well.

Here's what's in his system today:

Windows 10

600W Power Supply

8gb RAM

i5-3570K CPU

Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 MB

Would prefer to spend less than $300, but also want to get a couple more years out of his system for future games.

It looks like my biggest limiter is going to be the PSU.

I was considering the GTX970 or the Radeon R9 390, but there are so many flavors of these cards I'm getting confused.

I'd go with an R9 290, its almost as fast as the gtx 970 for around 200. And it has 4gb of ram vs 3.5. The benefit of the 390 is 8gb of ram and not much more. Which may future proof it longer for another 100 bucks.  The 290x isn't worth the extra cash imo.

GTX 970 all the way, you won't regret it. I don't have any personal experience with AMD, but from what I've read they are always considered the second class citizen when it comes to graphics compared to Nvidia. I get 60FPS on ultra with AA enabled at 16x, here are my specs:

i7 870, 16GB DDR3, nVidia GTX 970

Must not be very far into the game.

4790k/970/16GB and on ultra (even with Godrays off and at 1080p) the game dips heavily into the mid to low 40's when in places like Lexington or Diamond City. It runs well for the most part, but it's far from a solid 60FPS experience with everything cranked.

All that being said, I do love my 970. Bought it back at launch and it's still going strong. However at this point, you may be better suited waiting for Pascal. If you absolutely have to play FO4 now, a 970 isnt a terrible purchase by any means. But me personally? I'd buy something on the cheap side like a 760 for around $150 and just pocket the extra cash and ride it out until Pascal drops.
