PS4 WiFi Issues

Greetings,

I apologize if this is not the correct forum subsection for this. I recently bought a PS4 and the wifi speed is absurd. It is either 48kb/s or it times out trying to log in to PSN on the connection test. Wired I get anywhere from 18-33mb/s.

I browsed online and found various "fixes" but none of them seem to work. I tried changing the DNS settings to the Google DNS and a VPN I use (Unblock.us) and neither worked. I attempted to create a static IP on my router and that didn't work either.

My ISP is Comcast and I tried talking to them but they weren't much help.

I looked and it appears like all the threads relating to this are really old so I wasn't sure if maybe I am missing something or if everybody else is finding answers elsewhere.

I appreciate any help and thank you in advance.

Do you have any other wireless devices that may be causing interfernce?

When my wireless video baby monitor is turned on, my PS4 has abysmal wifi speeds, however it is normal if the baby monitor is off.

Are you in an apartment or live in an area with lots of homes nearby?

My first thought is 2.4GHz wifi interference. Basically, so many people have wifi now and 2.4GHz is the most commonly used band, that they're interfering with one another. You can use an app like wifi analyzer to check what other wifi boardcasts are in your range and how powerful they are.

If you have a dual band router, then fire up the 5GHz band and everything should be better. This isn't just for the PS4, but all devices. Most newer devices these days support 5GHz but not all do.

The other two replies are fairly likely to be correct, you are likely getting slow speeds on your PS4 because of interference on the 2.4GHz band, that could be because you have devices like a wireless phone or baby monitor that also use that band, or because you live in an apartment block with a lot of other routers that are also using that band and interfering with each other.

The typical solution is to use a router that supports 5GHz, however unfortunately I don't believe the PS4 supports 5GHz (it's possible newer revisions might, and I haven't been paying attention), so you're out of luck there.

If a wire is an option, then I'd just go with that and forget about it, if not, make sure your router supports 5GHz and then get a wireless bridge (if you have a spare 5GHz capable router you might be able to set that up as a bridge) it will connect to your primary router wirelessly, and you then wire the bridge to your PS4 network port.

Sorry there's not an easier fix.
