SSD Recommendations?

Newegg sent me a $10 free gift card so I was thinking of picking up a cheap SSD.  They have 120GB ones as cheap as $30 and 250GB ones as cheap as $70 I think.

Any brands you guys recommend?  Brands to avoid?  Size recommendations? I had an old one that was 64GB but that was just not enough IMO.

Edit:

Also see something called a hybrid SSD/HD.  How are those?

Fox, why would you post this here? noob

Hybrid drives use NAND flash memory for the cache and most accessed files but still need to start up the physical disk to access other data, meaning spindle speed is still a factor in response time. As far as price-to-size goes, they're a cheap alternative that boot quickly but are only marginally better than regular HDDs in terms of gaming. SSDs offer much better speeds and are much more reliable overall. It's harder to lose data on them, too. You sacrifice storage space for speed, though.

CNET has a good article on SSDs here: http://www.cnet.com/topics/storage/best-hard-drives-and-storage/ssd/

Someone at Tom's Hardware also wrote a guide called "Best SSDs" on Nov. 8th, so it's the most recent: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-recommendation-benchmark,3269.html

I've seen a lot of good reviews from gamers for the Samsung 840 Evo and Sandisk Extreme Pro, which are listed on those. Your best bet is to have an SSD for your OS and the programs you use most often, and an HDD for storing other games, movies, music, etc.

Newegg has and Intel 120GB for $40 which would be $30 after the gift card.  That one is tempting and Intel is usually a good brand. What's the benefit of one big SSD vs. a ton of small ones?

No real benefit other than having to figure out which drive to put stuff on, assuming you have enough ports. An extra SSD is only going to draw like another watt, so power's not an issue. It won't slow the other drive down, so that's also not an issue.

Ease of use or price is really the only reason between the two.

That said, Intel drives are great, but so are Samsung 830s and 850s. The 840s had issues when they first came out, I don't know if they're fixed. But 850s are out anyways, so it's a moot point.

Edit: And you totally whored your link in the Steam thread.

There's no difference as long as you're using a RAID0 configuration to stripe data to the NANDs of smaller SSDs. More storage capacity on an SSD means more chip controllers to stripe data; the more chip controllers that are present, the higher the read/write bandwidth, and the faster you can load up resource-consuming programs. Like multi-core rendering vs. single-core rendering--as long as you can cluster the same number of NAND chips, you will get the same results. 512GB will perform the same as two 256GB in RAID0 configuration.

Oh god, please don't RAID0 your SSDs. Modern SSDs saturate SATA 3.0 as it is. I doubt Fox is using PCIe m.2 drives, so it won't be a speed boost for him at all. It'll just make it more likely for one drive to fail and you losing data.

Edit: Was thinking about something else not applicable.

If your looking to install games on your ssd you might want to get a 250gb one. Since an ssd will help speed up the "loading" of the game. (but other things can affect that: cpu/gpu/ram). And newer ones will have faster read/write speeds. Crucial, Samsung, Kingston make really good ssds.

Thanks.

Considering this one, but ordered an AMD one yesterday for $70 not knowing this one was going to be on sale. Need to decide whether I want to return it and get this one instead.

Has the AMD one shipped? And what size did you get. You may be able to cancel or change your order depending on where you got it.
Yeah, it shipped. I got a 240GB but I did sign up for a free trial of Newegg Premier so I should be able to return for free I think, I would just lose out on the $10 promo gift card they sent me so it would be $60 vs. $75

Not sure if the Samsung is worth the extra $15?

Thanks.

samsung evo 850 are considered one of the top models for ssd

Does your motherboard have sata 3 ports. If not you won't notice a difference between the two. But I imagine your current ssd is pretty old. So either drives will be a noticeable upgrade (unless you only have sata 2 ports). Then you may only notice a little bit of a difference at most.

Between the two drives the samsung is faster. But not by any difference you would notice in day to day use. Your getting a few more gb for the extra $15 bucks. But the way ssd prices are dropping. I imagine the 480/500gb models will be around $100 bucks in the next 3-6 months.
