Honestly, this thing looks like the ultimate vita grip.

THIS REVIEW is fairly brutal, but the device looks great.

The lowest I can find it for is about $50 on Amazon w/prime, or $35 on Rakuten Global (+international shipping).

I might just buy it down the line though since it looks like it would really make remote play and PS1 games so much better.

This seems like it would go great with the custom thumb-sticks made by Markbrochill.

I just bought one of these myself through Amazon.  It was a pretty tight fit to get in on the Vita, there are two plastic tabs that keep it in place.  I think they should've put more into it but aside from that it works pretty well for Remote play.  

 
Just got mine today from Amazon as well.  The tabs on the lower part of mine look completely different than the ones I have seen in reviews online.  They look smaller, making it easier to take the Vita in and out.  I will post some photos tonight once I get it all set up.

Yep. Mine fucked up my Vita. Ended up returning the grip. The 1000 model version is so much better since it is basically a shell you clasp down. None of this shove in bullshit.

 
^I would like to know what that is.  I can see that it is a Hori branded product. 

I was interested in the L2R2 Grip, but if this Hori one doesn't scratch my Vita and is cheaper.  I'll go for this alternative.

Edit 2:  I thought the L2 and R2 buttons were the ones that hit the back touchpad.  I want something like these to play Borderlands 2 on my Vita.

Well yeah, it's out now. I posted when it was still pre-order.

I have it, it's nice. The triggers simply touch different sectors of the back touch pad. It's useless for games that have special remote play set ups, like Destiny. It's great for the majority of the games that simply map l2/r2/l3/r3 to the back touch pad.

My main game is Destiny, so I probably will just use it for comfort. It makes the vita a bit more comfy.
