JEKKI and I have been sharing our NieR:Automata progress on Twitter; here's our conversation, if anyone's interested. Currently, both of us have reached Ending B and are taking a break from it for a little while.

As for what I think about the game so far, I like that the janky aspects of the original NieR have been polished up. The sidequests and fishing in particular are way better. The story doesn't have as much mystery to it, though, in part because the machine lifeforms are easier to understand compared to the Shades. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to enjoy the story without having to run to translated supplemental materials online (also, I like that the weapon stories are in-game this time, a la Drakengard).

A few spoilery plot thoughts:

In other news, I reached the 20th floor in Etrian Odyssey V not too long ago, so hoping I can wrap that up soon. The news about Etrian Odyssey X came as a bit of a shock to me, since I thought they'd be done with the 3DS by now. It sounds like it's gonna be a big celebration of the whole franchise; I'm looking forward to it.

Pillars 2, wat.

Beat Atelier Lydie & Suelle. It's better than the past two Atelier games but still falls short of the previous two trilogies a bit in my opinion. Also surprised that God of War is an Action RPG and plays pretty well. I need to pick it back up to finish the last bit. There was something else I played through, but I can't remember it.

Pillars 2 will be releasing next week and the remake of Strange Journey the week after that, which I never got around to playing the original. So those will be my next two games I think.

I haven't really made any progress in Etrian Odyssey V either. Not sure when I will. Playing handhelds is difficult for me even if the game is good and I enjoy it.

Don't forget the Scavenger hunt codes if you want a few useless bonus items at the start.

Codes can be found here:

Just missing the last ten codes for the cosmic pirate pig pet. If you want to mass-enter them, there's probably a small Javascript insert you can put into the page somewhere in those two links.

Tales of Vesperia is pretty good. Would've been nice if we got the PS3 version, but there was probably some agreement with Microsoft. The only real issue I have with that game is the lack of being able to track sidequest type stuff. It's pretty much impossible without a guide, which is dumb.

I hope V doesn't use the same Evil/Neutral/Good system because I feel like they're going to re-use the same things they did in Strange Journey, IV & Apocalypse where they assign a single NPC ally as good or bad. I'd also much rather see the focus be towards one story with it ending how they want it to end whether it's morally good or bad. Splitting it up makes it feel too ham-fisted.

That said, the new Fire Emblem is setting off some negative flags for me. I like the idea of visually adding in troops/squads that attack with the character. On the other hand from the footage I saw, they really need to better show off the background troops actually properly attacking. Some of the gameplay I saw was jarringly bad in that respect. Not to mention the name 'The Three Houses' sets off red flags like Fates did and Pokemon does. I don't want another game split up between more microtransactions and would rather have it be just a single linear story that's good than three that are sub-par. They really needed to be included in the base price if they go the way Fates did.

I was also surprised by the hub town exploration. I mean why? I don't really understand the point of it in this type of game other than to waste time to inflate the total game time or add in a bunch of typically worthless sidequests that have no real story to them. It would be nice to be proven wrong, however with how the last few new entries were I feel like more effort should be put towards other parts of the development process. I'd also like to see some better maps, both big and small.

Also hope that CrossCode releases in the next couple of months. I enjoyed what I played and have been waiting for it who knows how long at this point. It's too bad that it likely won't come to consoles/handhelds since it runs in HTML5 and not a single console or handheld supports HTML5, except for the Wii U. The entire game would have to be re-designed with a new engine if it ever went to other platforms.
