My First FPS!

CAGiversary!
I've been wanting to get into FPS games for a while now. The stories! The environments! The sheer choice of games! Fantastic!

Problem is I'm a wuss. I'm lucky if I manage 5mins without panicking...

So, any suggestions for first time FPS games? Preferably Linux compatible (but not necessary), and no MMO's please.

Not sure if this counts as a FPS, buy the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series are first person rpg with great stories and environments.

Halo's single-player campaign is a great traditional FPS for newcomers, but I don't know how easy it is to get the PC/Mac versions these days.

The Half-Life series (PC/Mac/Linux) is also quite accessible, though more puzzley. However, those games might spoil you for all other FPSes-- they're that good.

I haven't kept up much with the genre since the mid-00s (though I do want to play the latest Wolfenstein), so apologies if you were looking for more recent games

Oh, and I probably should note that many, if not most, FPSes have included difficulty settings since the Wolfenstein 3D/Doom era for their campaigns. That said, if you're worried about an FPS being too hard for you at first, look for one that has an easy/beginner's mode.

I'll just list a few off the top of my head depending what you're looking for and I'm not sure which are native linux:

Dystopian setting with some story? Dues Ex series, Bioshock series, System Shock series or Spec Ops: The Line

Loot fests or weird stories/characters? Borderlands series

Survival fetish? Any of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

Story and puzzles? Half-Life 1 & 2

Old school run and gun? Wolfenstein: The New Order

Horror atmosphere? Metro series or F.E.A.R. series

Destroy shit? Red Faction: Guerrilla (Mostly third person)

Campy 80s movie style? Far Cry: Blood Dragon

Strong stealth elements? Hitman series, Splinter Cell series, Dishonored & Thief 1 & 2 (Some may be third person)

More simulation side? ARMA

Adventure? Tomb Raider (2013)

Tactical Shooter? Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Rainbow Six Vegas 1 & 2, Ghost Recon & Advanced Warfighter 1 & 2

Some may be a little old, but may have mods to help with the graphics.

Oh yea Spec Ops the Line. I need to play that again

Thanks for all your responses!

Looks like I have a few good starters already then (System Shock 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky, both Metro's and a couple of the Thief series).

...*deep breath*...

Now for the nerve! :twoguns:

some of the games u mention is currently on bundlestars.com one sale in their all star bundle for $1.99 for the first 24 hrs. which is about to end soon

A little late here but my 2 pennies: I generally stay away from FPSes.  I dont have great reflexes and I get a little motion sick with some first person views.  Anyway, there are two (actually three) first person perspective games that I *really* enjoyed. First is (are) Portal (and Portal 2).  Not a traditional FPS where you are trying to kill things, but playing those games got me used to the viewpoint and aiming and moving and such.  The other is Bioshock Infinite. Again, a little non-traditional as you have the powers/vigors/(plasmids) to assist in the shooting, but there is also a good story to drag you along even to get you used to the gameplay.

FPSes are still not my preferred type of game, but after playing the above, I'm no longer intensely opposed to them either.

I was a console gamer till much later, even after I got into gaming I didn't really play much till Halo.

My first pc fps was the Halo trial which got me into Halo 3.

There's also FPS out there that aren't your usual military shoot shoot shoot type of things.  You just have to look til you find one you like.  I also recommend playing anything on Easy.  If FPS make you nervous, then playing on Easy lets you enjoy the story/game without needing to stress out or replay a lot of areas.

One of my favorite shooters (though a TPS) of recent times is Sniper Elite V2.   It has an easy mode and really great sniping.

download black mesa source. it's a free re-make of the original half-life using a better graphics engine. or play the original. either way, best fps of all time.
