Could I buy this and then just get the PS4 disc and have it work fine with the actual platform and everything?

Unfortunately, no. It's like Disney Infinity and Skylanders. The PS3/4 Wii/U portal is interchangeable, but the Xbox 360/One versions only work on the console you buy it for.
